Irozuku has been pretty decent so far. Like someone mentioned, it's really really pretty. Not sold on the story but I do quite like Hitomi and the magic is interesting. Wish there was a bit more of it, and I know it's setting up for a depressed ending given how much there is to resolve and how little time is left. Dunno if it'll break my top 10 but it's at least fun.

It may have a sequel now, but it was 1 cour at the time. One of the best shows that year!

And who knows how Sirius went, hostage negotiations still ongoing for that series.

True Tears had a solid ending and didn't need to be longer.

Angel Beats had an amazing final episode that made me cry a lot.

Tari Tari was consistent all the way through with a very good ending.

I think people liked Uma Musume's ending too?

I feel like they do alright with endings in general. What shows have they done where the endings are way worse than the rest of the show?

As an avid SAO hater I think Alicization is pretty good.

The newest episode obviously had THAT problem, which means it's all anyone is gonna talk about in regards to the show for a while, but it did make sense that it went in that direction given the circumstances. Could have just done without them animating it like they did.

That said, I don't feel like anybody is actually talking a out the show. Maybe the fanbase just isn't used to it actually being decent and they don't know how to handle themselves.

After a long break, I finally went back to continue Monogatari, watching the first three arcs of Owarimonogatari (Ougi Formula, Sodachi Riddle, and Sodachi Lost). Monogatari has had its ups and downs for me, ranging from the 10/10 Hanekawa arcs to the 1/10 Nisemonogatari arcs. I didn't hate these three, but they were definitely closer to the bottom than the top. Most of it was just boring. It didn't feel like a Monogatari story either, even the visuals and text screens felt phoned in.

All three of these arcs were about Sodachi, and the more I learned about her, the less I cared. The more the plot unfolded, the less sense it made, too. The first arc was learning about some pointless cheating incident (I get that there wound up being an actual conspiracy, but I just don't see why it mattered so much. The people who studied did better on average, how suspicious! We'd better have a trial to get to the bottom of this!). The second arc was learning why Araragi loves math. I'll admit I haven't watched Monogatari in awhile, but has his love of math come up even once at any point before this? And if it did, does it really need an origin story? Regardless, the tutoring was Sodachi's roundabout way to get Araragi to tell his police officer parents about her abusive family. The sheer stupidity of this whole arc didn't become clear until the next one, but for now I was just amazed that Araragi is apparently the least perceptive person in the world to not notice anything, and he also has the memory of a goldfish to have forgotten a girl he spent a whole summer with.

Anyway, the third arc revealed that they had met even earlier than that when Araragi's parents rescued her. Just... what. The police were already aware of her situation then. And, after apparently responding to the situation and finding it so severe that they removed the child from her parents, she just... wandered back? And no one stopped her? No one looked for her in the most likely place to look? No one cared? That's not how child endangerment works. Araragi is still an idiot (I mean, you really needed forty clues to work out what happened to her mom, I got it the instant they made a big deal about the door being locked even though it wasn't relevant to the story, practically making it a neon sign of a clue) but none of this is his fault, either.

The only thing that I might have cared about from any of this was finally learning something about Ougi, but aside from Hanekawa finding her dangerous there wasn't anything interesting on that front either. Just a lot of back-and-forths that didn't go anywhere. Ah well, the next arc in this season is apparently about Shinobu and not Sodachi/Ougi, so hopefully I'll like it better.

I'm liking Alicization, though I haven't watched the most recent episode. (More because of Smash than anything. That's also why I haven't watched any more Devilman)

But yeah I think it's pretty good. It's fallen a bit by the wayside in terms of shows I'm talking about because Bunny Girl, Slime, and Bloom Into You are all better than it, but that's more a statement of how many good shows there are this season than anything.

Monogatari in a nutshell.

Yeah I wasn't a huge fan of this stretch of episodes either. In retrospect it's also probably these episodes, if anything, that led to my current state of disillusionment with the series.

Seeing some rumblings and arguments about how Funimation is shit talking Netflix getting Eva, and firing back back with how long it took them to bring over 3.0.

While there is no doubt that FUNi is salty about losing the bidding war, I remind people that them holding 3.0 back for years was them doing us a SERVICE, putting off the reveal that a movie so awful that it retroactively damaged the brand was released for as long as possible.

I personally salute FUNi for trying to save us from 3.0. Just sad they couldn't stop the release altogether ;_;

Alright, now I'm done Shinobu Mail and with it the first season of Owarimonogatari. That was definitely a step up from the last few arcs, but nowhere near enough to reach the upper echelons of the series.

I liked how it brought a lot of previous events together, obviously running concurrently with Hanekawa's tiger story and also dealing with the aftermath of that Hachikuji story and revisiting Shinobu's past. There were a lot of loose threads that finally came together, and I appreciated the craftsmanship that must've went into setting all of that up and keeping it coherent.

Sadly, I found the actual plot of this arc to be rather lacking, especially compared to what I feel it could have been. Shinobu's first minion returns and they only had one quick scene together as she eats him. I'm having trouble gathering my thoughts to explain exactly why, but I just didn't find it satisfying after all that build-up. I'm imagining a Monogatari-style episode long conversation between Shinobu and her minion and I would have vastly preferred that. I'm sure there's a poignancy that would have been lost and an argument for why this was the best way to handle it... but it wasn't for me I guess.

Not a bad arc by any stretch. I liked Gaen tracing all the plot threads from the past to the present, how it fit with all the other arcs, Araragi's interactions with the first minion were neat... but when it came time for what should have been the big emotional payoff, I felt nothing. Ah well, next up is Koyomimonogatari and then one more season!

Today's episode of Bunny Girl was really good, I thought.

I liked how easily the actor/boyfriend drama was finally swept aside. Kaede making progress was nice to see too, I'm glad we're back to 3-episode pacing so nothing has to be rushed. The amnesia reveal at the end might justify how attached Kaede is to her brother if he was literally the only person she knew for a long time. She had access to a TV too so I choose to believe she watched certain imouto anime and got the completely wrong idea about how sisters should act from that.

Given the number of posts this last day, it looks like I'm the only one around here still watching anime!

Anyway, I just finished Koyomimonogatari. I enjoyed these short episodes. The characters in Monogatari are all at least decent enough that it's fun seeing them interacting in short-story type things. The one with Karen was the worst (Nisemonogatari flashbacks made me cringe when it opened with her shoving her boobs onto Araragi's head) but even it was an okay episode once they got past the obligatory incest jokes. It's also hard to complain about a season where a whole episode was just Shinobu being cute while eating donuts. Nice seeing Hanekawa before the hairstyle change, too. She looked so much better then...

When looking up the order of the series, I saw in a few different places that it was vital to see this season before Owarimonogatari S2. For ten episodes I was like, why. These are fun but there's absolutely nothing vital here. Then Araragi fucking died, dang. I suppose that counts as vital! It'd be nice if Hanekawa could become the new main character but I know he survives (or revives or whatever) thanks to his appearance in Hanamonogatari. Still wasn't expecting him to die so good job Koyomimonogatari, I'm excited to see what happens next when I finish the series tomorrow.
