Years ago when I walked to university I used TracFone as an emergency phone. It was nothing like the smartphones today.

I guess it's just that I use PC email and talk to people in person?

This was the reason I could do a bunch or stuff when my phone broke. I had to log on to do something, but I didnt have my phone. So, when logging on, I said I couldnt do it because I didnt have a working phone. So, it took me to another screen, but I still needed a phone to do it. It was ridiculous.

A little. But also ridiculous when I had my email adresss, password, credit card information, and other stuff. But I guess some like it. I should see if I could turn it off for what I use it for...

I think if its a good SMS verification service, it will actually let you use preapproved codes that you can use to login even if your phone is offline. Now maybe you can use those temporary codes instead of getting a phone?

It should be banned along with captchas. Extra security is pointless if it prevents people from using a service. Oh you made 2FA available but tell me I have to buy a phone? GTFO.

Being required to validate with SMS to simply log into an account, or to change a password, with no alternate validation options, is idiotic. I don't mind filling out a half-dozen question:response pairs in advance to avoid that. That is, until space and hyphens aren't allowed in the answers.

I wish. Sites with forced captchas I stopped visiting. Lost a survey site, can't use CL, no go with Sony's or Nin's sites, and the only way to contact them to bitch about it is social media. I swear if I hafta go through all that then I'm going to ruin their day on those sites.

I didn't have a cell phone for a long time (finally got the cheapest flip-phone available when I bought my house, but only because there was no landline in the house and it would have been more expensive to get one installed).

My old justification was that:
a) I lived in a house with zero cell reception (it died out about 5 km from my house), so it was completely unusable while I was at home;
and
b) I had a landline at home and a workphone at work. If I was not at one of those two places I was either driving, in which case I can't answer the phone anyways, or I'm running errands, doing something with friends, or am otherwise busy, in which case I don't want to be bothered by a phone (and 90+% of the time that still holds true - if I'm not at home/work, I pretty much never answer my phone and may as well not have it at all).

A six letter password isn't more brute-forcible when they don't know it's six letters. In fact, when 8 characters, 1 number and 1 special character are required, I bet the majority of users use a dictionary word, a number and a normal grammatical character in that order.

Of course, we're just ignoring that most password losses are from misplaced trust (phishing and ex-friends) or accessed from the back end.

Its not just that. When I broke my cell phone and was trying to get a new one, I had to log in my account to do something first. Then, when I tried to log in, you sill needed a phone even when you put you didnt have one. So, I had to jump through hoops to still get it done. They should be able to cater to everyone, though. And allow you to turn it off if you dont want it...

But you got in didn't you? How often are you breaking your cell phone that you would need to do that? They gave you a workaround that worked. For the 99% of their user base that has a working phone, it's a tremendous improvement.

They shouldn't jeopardize their platform for edge cases.

They didnt give me a work around. I had to find a way to use someone elses phone. The problem was, when you use another phone, you have to go through a verification process. Which means that after using their phone, I have to wait from like a few days to a week for a random calm or text from them. It could be at anytime. And you only had a certain amount of time to be able to answer and then log in. Which would suck if I was at work. or couldnt reach the person. But I had all the other info like account name, password, credit card info, etc... They should have just let me in my own account if Inhad all that... Because of someone else had all that info, they could still easily hack my account by changing the number to their own, anyway...

I dont see how its an improvement, anyway. They should let people who dont want it to be able to turn it off. And the people who want it can keep it. That would make more sense. You can choose your level of security. They wonder why peoples passwords are simple these days. Or why people write them down. Or use the same one for everything. Its because they make it so you have to make them 16 characters. And they have to have upper case letters, lowercase letters, numbers, symbols, the blood of your first born child, etc... Just let people make a password they want. If they get hacked, its there fault. Suggest making a better password if you think its weak, but dont force them to make it something they cant remember...

It's an improvement because it's probably the single most effective way to improve security on your user accounts. And many organizations do allow you to choose the level of security on your account, however, they're still going to get blamed if a user opts not to use it. There are a number of government regulations that require certain institutions (IE banks) to put that shit in place otherwise they get fined (at best) after auditors find that shit to be materially deficient.

And passwords ARE changing. The most recent NIST guidelines for password requirements now recommend passwords just be long. At least 12 characters IIRC. They don't care about complexity anymore, because length will always be more effective at preventing brute force. They're also removing complexity guidelines for the very reason you stated; people are lazy. But unfortunately it takes time for that stuff to go into place. Businesses don't move quickly.

I just miss the old days. I could make a password that I could remember for each site. I do remember the guy who made the rules for passwords did say it was probably better to just use 4 words because of the length...

Anyway, I feel that SMS verification is gonna stay for a while, even if I dont like it...
