Back in my day, 1GB seemed unrealistic. xD

Things just keep getting bigger and bigger, I saw USB pens bigger than my computer's HDD, wouldn't surprise me if in 10 years or even less we'd have entire games that are at least 1TB so we'd need PB HDDs to cope.

I remember the Commodore PET booting up and saying it had ~16000 bytes of memory free (in other words, 16kb - which is about as much data that can be contained in four maxed out posts on this forum), and the idea of having a permanent "hard drive" to store data at all seemed kind of ridiculous. And we basically had to store data on audio cassettes or literally type programs we wanted to run in line-by-line every time we booted up the computer.

My dad likes to mention recording programmes of the radio from time to time, when reminiscing.

I occasionally fondly remember that this was once a thing:

HDD* - Hard Disk Drive as opposed to Solid State Drive.

Intel was already working on a new form factor for SSDs last year that will make a petabyte drive a possibility. You just make the thing bigger so you can fit more chips in it. So it really is only a matter of time and demand.

HDD capacity increases have slowed down over the past few years. I think we are near the limit of how big HDD can get. SSD's have a higher theoretical limit but I'm not sure how high it can go.

I just want SSD to get cheaper. I want a 4TB SSD and not be like $900 dollars. Then I could kick my old HDD to the curb.

I cant really imagine filling up that space.
But 20 years ago, 1 TB seemed unrealistic

more like 15 years ago 1tb seemed unrealistic. the first computer I had was 80 gigs and people were like you will never use all those gigs. that's to much.

We will see 1 peta in our life. servers need them.

Maybe. We might need it. Seems like storage just barely keeps up to information.
