Board 8 > Why did Super Mario Odyssey fail to boost Mario?

SMO was one of the highest rated games ever, even higher than BOTW by some review aggregators. Yet, after a while, this site largely stopped talking about it, and Mario has been surprisingly weaker than expected in the contests. As a main protagonist shouldnt Mario have been boosted considerably from SMO?

Galaxy games hardly have any sort of boost whatsoever, so this isn't surprising. As people have said it before, he's become way too "standard" to have any significant drop or gain in strength.

Well Galaxy, despite its critical acclaim, wasnt actually very popular on this site (because of its restrictive level design) and this was reflected in its lackluster performance in best game tournaments held after galaxys release.

But SMO had a strong post-release reception here, at least in the short term.

I personally liked Odyssey more than BotW, but BotW tried something more different and was significantly more hyped. Also, if you didn't like Mario before Odyssey likely did very little to change that.

I can't see new games having much effect on Mario at all at this point, yeah. He already has some A+ games, one more isn't going to change much.

BotW did some Zelda-specific things which helped her specifically capture more of the LoZ vote than she has in the past.

I dunno that Link has changed that much honestly. FF/Cloud has weakened a bit and Nintendo has boosted relatively, but within that Link is roughly what he's always been.

Cloud in 2013 and Cloud and Sephiroth in Rivalry Rumble sucked enough that it's entirely believable Link hasn't changed much in strength since 2010.

The best Zelda is still Spirit Tracks Zelda, but BotW Zelda has a lot more to her than damsel in distress

Link has not gotten a "huge boost". No result he has put up has surprised me, nor many others here that I can tell? Nobody saw Noctis/Cecil/Zidane/Tidus all lose round 1 while Nintendo beasted and thought "gee, I bet Cloud is still capable of getting 46% on Link".

Zelda is definitely the one who has turned heads.

I haven't played BotW myself (not actually being a LoZ fan and all) but a lot of people have spoken highly of Zelda from the game. *shrug*

There are only about 30 minutes of cutscenes, all viewable on YouTube of course. Will save you 100 hours, 80 of which are spent walking.

Present day: Ganon has taken over Hyrule Castle and kidnapped Zelda. You have to save her.

100 years ago: Link was Zeldas royal knight. Zelda kept running into monsters and Link would have to save her. She had trouble channeling her sacred powers (granted by the Triforce) and kept failing despite the training. She instead wanted to be a scientist. She also had a crush on Link.

Thats about it, really nothing about this characterization (or any previous one) that would explain a doubling in popularity within a few years.
