Now first of all, obviously this is all just my opinion.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate is checking all the boxes for me, and its biggest selling point was its comprehensive list of characters, stages and music that were found in previous games. Plus, you can take it on the go.

I guess the Subspace Story Mode from Brawl and Melees specific gameplay physics/mechanics and Adventure mode are what you can use to argue for the older games still deserving to be in your collection.

For me though, This game has removed any reasoning to play or own the old games besides nostalgia.

Is there a game in a franchise that you feel made all other entries obsolete? This is hard for story driven games due to all of them having their own unique narrative.

that depends

melee is still probably gonna be the primary smash games for the huge competitive events like evo.

Almost any current FPS series sees the new games replace the old ones. Also this is true of many other more conventional fighters, like SFV pretty much replaced SFIV.

Melee is actually a really bad example for this. Brawl and SSB4 are irrelevant now, but Melee is the one Smash game which will pretty much never die because of the depth of tech skill in the game and the huge competitive scene.

I'm not so sure about that. Smash 4 was getting almost as much representation as Melee at big events and Ultimate appears to be much better than Smash 4.

There was talks at EVO this year about potentially only having one Smash game at EVO next year and if thats the case I think Ultimate would get the spot over Melee. It'll either be that or both will get in, but I don't see Melee getting a spot and not Ultimate.

DDR A has left me approximately no desire to play earlier versions, aside from playing a few old songs here and there for nostalgia's sake.

Melee initially made Smash 64 obsolete, but 64 found its own niche again.

Brawl did not make Melee obsolete.

Smash 4 made Brawl obsolete but not Melee.

Ultimate will likely make Smash 4 obsolete but still not Melee.

The Rock Band games made each other obsolete because they let you import the old songs into the new games. There's no reason for me to ever put my Rock Band 2 disc in again because I have all that stuff in 3.

Persona 5 from a pure gameplay standpoint, although the other games can be saved by their stories. It's hard to go back though

I've run into quite a few YouTube commenters defending Brawl so it looks like it's just going to be Smash 4 regarded as "obsolete".

Even then, maybe people prefer not having only eight playable characters to start and want trophies back?
