Fighting game fans are used to seeing ads in tournaments, but now they're infiltrating the games themselves. Capcom is introducing "sponsored content" to Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition on December 11th to promote its purchasable bundles, costumes and the Pro Tour. You'll see them on costumes, in certain stages and on pre-fight loading screens. This isn't concerning by itself (many real sports have ads, after all), but Capcom goes out of its way to discourage you from turning the ads off.

While you can switch off ads, you'll lose extra Fight Money and access to sponsored material like costumes. In essence, you'll have to either live with the ads or accept that you won't unlock as much content as your ad-friendly peers. And this wouldn't be such an issue if players hadn't already paid full price for SFV on top of add-on purchases. While Capcom isn't running third-party ads (at least not at this moment), the move could be annoying if you've already spent a lot on the game and would rather not see further sales pitches.

what do you mean? players still get the same amount of fight money that they got before the ads were a thing. if they decide to opt in to the ads, they get bonus fight money on top of the previous amount of fight money they were getting. so yeah this is a reward, not a penalty.

I don't see an issue with what they are doing in this instance, it's just stuff promoting the DLC and the pro tour during loading screens, not really that big of an issue by itself.

The bigger problem is that the video game industry (at least the big AAA developers) has shown time and time again that if you give them an inch they'll take a mile and try to milk things for as long as possible before moving on to some other money making scheme at the expense of the players, so this happening could potentially turn into full blown third party ads later down the road. I'd like to think that wouldn't happen any time soon, if ever, but given how they haven't stopped trying to milk people out of more money I wouldn't be surprised if it did eventually turn into this

Already stated. Simply put, allowing ads gets you more then you have now. Disabling then means you get nothing but lose nothing.

If you're getting more for allowing ads than that is not penalizing, that's simply rewarding. So I have no issue with this at all, but the thing I think everyone should be worried about is what kind of precedent might bring to the gaming world. I just hope that is paranoia speaking on my part.

Watch ads, get rewarded.
Don't watch ads? No change from normal.

Whether or not the rewards are worth it or pretty much required (they can change the price of future items to accommodate the increase in rewards given) is dependent on the game/player base.

these ads arent even the kind you watch if i understand it. it just puts a banner in the load screen that doesnt affect load times or a logo of sponsored content on your character's costume or on something in the stage. imagine boxing ring ads and sponsors on the trunks of the boxers.

Pretty sure anyone playing it has already paid by buying the fucking game. It's one thing to have ads in free games; but in a game you've paid for that's ridiculous.

And there is no difference except in the way you word it. It's the exact same lack-of-logic that makes people not realise that positive racism towards one group is just negative racism towards all other groups, just framed in a different way.
