Max amount of MP I believe, but there might be another reason.

Magic damage in this game is based on Max MP, and you get 2 additional MP overall for choosing the staff with the max for a staff user being 18 MP. Now the thing is there are items you can synth that permanently boost your strength and defense, but no so such thing for getting that 2 additional MP. In short this means Staff can reach the same strength caps as the sword, the same defense caps as the shield, and has a higher magic than either sword or shield can reach. Staff users are always the strongest sora in the long run because of this.

Sword users get 1 extra item slot compared to the staff and Shield gets 2 extra item slots compared to the staff. BUT now the same thing about using items to increase your strength and defense hold true for the shield to. So Shield and Sword have the same strength, defense, and magic caps but Shield gets one additional item slot. Which makes the shield just firmly superior to the sword no matter how miniscule that one slot is.

There is basically no advantage in long run to choosing Sword.

For FM and going for 100%, I'd suggest taking the shield. Makes early game much less of a pain in the ass and you learn the good skills for optional content earlier than Staff.

who cares about item slots what are you gonna put in there? more potions? you got cure though

if you're doing 100% you're getting the ultima keyblade anyway for the optional bosses which means you're going to be level 90+ by the time you do them, so ultimately doesn't matter what you pick in the beginning, but go for the extra MP just because

Lucky Strike at level 24 with shield vs 48 with rod

Guard at 15 vs 33

Leaf Bracer at 27 vs 39

Probably the big one: Second Chance at 36 vs 90

Second Chance is the big one. You get it at level 36 with Shield, but level 90 with Staff.

I take it you must be at a high level to murder the optional bosses. If... Does Staff strengthen your Magic damage output? I remember relying on magic often.

Magic damage in KH1 is based on how much MP you have, so picking the staff will give you more magic damage than any other option.

I forgot. What input makes level-ups scarce in the beginning?

All first answers will make you level up quickly at first then slow down

All second answers will make you level normally

All third answers will make you level up slowly at first then speed up

I think the last one is the one that requires the least experience to level to 100.

Basically:

Main game on low difficulty: Sword (button mash your way through)
Main game on proud mode: Shield (earlier defensive skills)
Postgame content: Staff (extra MP)

Always drop the sword if you can, otherwise drop staff. Never drop the shield
