Why did movies like Black Panther, Wonder Woman, and Crazy Rich Asians become such huge successes? They were definitely promoted by the "woke" crowd.

i think it's to do w/ things that are blatant pandering w/ no real weight behind it. So like, think of if you have a song, right?

You have one that's a really good tune played on just acoustic or piano. Then you have some shitty ass, overproduced shit. The overproduced stuff doesn't have much behind it so it's all fluff, but the good tune can be produced/mastered and become a great tune.

Because people don't like existing characters being retconned and changed just to pander.

When it's an entirely new property, or one that was always black / female / whatever, that's an entirely different matter.

And that's consistently the result. Retcon movies like Ghostbusters flop. New / were-always-that-way ones like Wonder Woman do really well.

People trying to claim it's a result of "racism" / "sexism" / etc are wilfully ignorant of this fact.

1) There's phrase: the exception proves the rule. Nothing is 100% and a few big major successes may not counter the norm.

2) Part of this norm is that some of those big successes were almost willed to be so because they were the big tentpoles you "had" to see while other works don't get the same push. A black lead didn't push Pacific Rim Uprising to be profitable in America. The latest Robin Hood was fairly multi-ethnic in background cast and race swapped Little Jon, and it bombed.
