We get it, ads aren't what you're here for, but they do pay for the hosting and maintenance of TV Tropes. Please whitelist us or create an account to help support TV Tropes.

Lol? I thought wikipedia were the only ones begging for money, now tvtropes does something similarish as well.

Turns out more than one website requires money to run. It may in fact be all of them.

You can also create an account and just not use it.

Or create an account and contribute. That's what I did.

Websites that try to force that on me just never get visited again. They brought this on themselves by taking advantage of ad space long ago. Autoplay videos with max volume, gifs and flash animations all over their fucking site, breaking articles into "pages" just to have an excuse to load more ads.

Fuck 'em.

Just make an account

IIRC thats the only way to have Night Mode, and Spoilers Off, active all the time... and it doesnt cost anything to have an account either... which is why that message has always confused me, so i just log in.

TV Tropes isn't bad with ads. They deserve to be whitelisted, if you aren't going to pay.

And if you refuse to donate to Wikipedia, you're probably a bad person.

"Wah ads are so inconvenient".

Yeah well it's also inconvenient when hundreds of thousands of people visit your website every month without paying a dime and you have to shoulder all the cost of it. I have not used an adblocker in decades and, short of some very seedy sites, the most I have been agrieved by it is only the most relatively minor inconveniences imaginable. Sometimes you have to shoulder extremely minor burden to have services. Some people can't even managed that. Or maybe they think wages, maintenance, and server costs are paid for magically by a money tree. Completely immature.

It also might act as a selling point for flat fee ads whose revenue isn't driven by page clicks. "Advertise to our X number of members!" type of stuff

The best is when sites that are passive aggressive about ad blocking get caught serving malware through their ads.

Or the new one is offering an "ad free and tracking free" premium account for a monthly fee, blocking people who block ads, and then it turns out their "tracking free" service that you pay for still has trackers.
