Happy New Year! Good luck in 2019. #bump#

Credit goes to tazzyboyishere for first starting this in 2016. Basically, there are 50 challenges outlined below that will require you to beat 52 games total. This isn't a competition and there's no prize for winning aside from a sense of accomplishment. This is just a fun thing to participate in while we all work through our video game libraries. It also gives us a place to discuss what we're playing. Feel free to join in!

Rules:
- A single playthrough of a game can only be used for one challenge
- Use your own judgment to decide if game fits in a certain category
- Games started in 2018 or earlier are fine as long as they're finished in 2019
- Please add your own games to the spreadsheet linked to below, which anyone can edit
- When using the spreadsheet, please don't mess with checklists/tallies that aren't yours
- There's a tab listing favorite games in the spreadsheet if you need help with Challenge 43
- If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

for the record I still find it odd that the list is technically 52 games. My goal every year is still to hit 50 regardless

came closest in 2018. Managed to finish 46, but got stuck playing Smash and Red Dead, both of which were too long to finish by the end of the year

Due to my large quantity and affinity for sub-5 hour games, I have been able to clear the 50 mark with relative ease. That will end some day, hopefully not this year, but one year it will.

already at the start of this year, I have Red Dead and Smash and Splatoon 2 and the Crash trilogy to finish, as well as AC Odyssey, The Last Guardian, We Happy Few and Far Cry 5 to start. And I plan on getting KH3 this month

so pretty much all long games for a while coming up

I'll have a bunch of entries to add over the next few days. Instead of doing my usual thing of playing one game at a time to completion, I started playing a bunch of games in the last week so I have 3-4 that I'm over halfway done.

12. Beat a game made by a developer you've never tried

Onrush

First entry! I really liked the concept and innovation that this game brought, but it got a little stale by the end as I struggled to remain interested enough to finish the campaign. Maybe if I spent time in the online or playing with friends I would have found it more fun throughout. I actually had trouble finding a spot for this game until I looked through the developer's games and found about a hundred bad sports and racing games that I've never played.

technically it's game + 2 expansions but the expansions are full-game length so it counts imo

Anyway, we'll see if I do this this year, I kind of want to spend less money on games and this could encourage me to just finish up my backlog

I've heard good things about the Dirt and F1 games, and did play a very very small amount of Grid 2 actually which was okay, but pre-2010 does not look great for them!

37. Beat a game that's been in your backlog for a long time

Transistor

Supergiant Games has become one of my favourite developers over the last five years with Bastion being great and Pyre being one of the best games I played in 2018. I've owned Transistor since it was given away on PS Plus back in 2015, but kept putting off playing it for some reason. After seeing Supergiant's new game Hades at The Game Awards I figured I should finally play Transistor, and really liked it!

40. Finish a game that took you at least twenty-five hours to beat

Tales Of Symphonia: Dawn Of The New World

As usual for me, I end the previous year on a RPG expecting to beat it in the new year. The story is fine, but I had major issues with the gameplay. The monster recruiting system is garbage, but unfortunately is kinda necessary since the party members from the first game are always at fixed levels (usually underleveled too). I'll do a full Tales ranking once I beat Xillia 2 but I think this is the worst one I've played.

1/50. This year is going to start RPG-heavy as I'm doing Xillia 2 next and I'm likely following that up with KH3.

35. Beat a game with a lead that's from a fictional species

Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! (PS4)

The original game was #10 on my 'Top 100 Games List' I did a few years a ago, so I had high expectations for this game to deliver on everything that the original did, and it succeeded for the most part. As with the first game, it looks great, plays great, and is faithful to the original, which is all I wanted. The one spot that it isn't as great, though, is in the voice acting where a bunch of the voices have been changed. In almost all of these cases it was because the original voices were "bad", but there was some charm in the awfulness of them and that same charm is missing here.

It's also my first platinum of 2019!

12. Beat a game made by a developer you've never tried

The Flame in the Flood

- Pretty fun and relaxing survival game. There's a nice zen to the late game with enough supplies built up, enough warmth, enough food, that it's kind of chill getting to the end. I understand playing endless mode would be scavenging always, but I had a decent run of it at the end there just cruising along. Excellent soundtrack that reminded me of Life is Strange at times, some decent learning curve... it was enjoyable. Parts of me wish there was a bigger difficulty spike in the latter half or that there were lots more recipes that I needed to hoard for, ending the run with everything full of long unneeded items.

Also, the ending? My mind's kind of reeling on just the mechanics of it.

P.S. Just loaded up the other game I'm playing, and I may have back-to-back same publisher, Curve Digital.

Whoop, I love doing this challenge. I was so close to getting 50/50 in 2017, but got really burnt out around the end of that year. 2018 wasn't really much of a good year for me, so I didn't finish a lot of games but I'm determined to finally finish 50 games this year.

Here's to a good 2019!

37. Beat a game that's been in your backlog for a longtime

I started Banjo in 2017 but I never finished it until the other day, 100%.

17. Beat a first person shooter

Wolfenstein: The New Order

15. Beat a puzzle game

32. Beat a game with a non-white lead

Caravan

What It Is: You're a prince who lost his home and family in the middle of the desert and must trade to survive the harsh land.
Estimated Time Played: 8 hours

Decent game. It was difficult in the beginning getting a hang of the mechanics that I died twice, but once you have some levels, some income, and a strong party, the game becomes much easier to navigate. Decently fun.

44. Beat a game based on licensed stories/characters

Batman: Arkham City

What It Is: After the events of Arkham Asylum, Batman infiltrates an entire section of city walled off to keep the inmates in and fight against the clock to keep Gotham safe.
Estimate Time: 25+ hours

- Played this five or so years ago and beat it, but itched to do it again after Arkham Asylum. Definitely a much better game. The exploration is awesome, the combat fluid, the boss fights actually good, some great side missions and story twists, and the riddler's riddles and puzzles are my favorite parts. Going to find everything before I fully put this game down, but for now, consider it beated.

28. Beat a game with the supernatural as a central theme

Devil May Cry 4

I am now ready for the new game after playing through the entire series for the first time (mostly) in the last few months. This one had the best, and most, story of the bunch, which is kind of what I was looking for as someone whose main goal was to familiarize myself with the lore before the new game, but the game play was also very good in this too. Dante was hilarious and had me laughing out loud at a few of the cutscenes. Fun game overall!

I think I've beaten this at least a dozen times, now. Played an explosion focus build, and sided with the Legion, since it had been a long time since I've done either. Going to hop back in to play the DLC before I'm done. The Outer Worlds can't come soon enough.

19. Beat a platformer

Spyro 3

Trilogy complete! Every time I start this game, I wonder why it isn't my favourite as the first few levels are great, and then a few hours in I realize that all of the extra characters control very poorly, the level design isn't as great as the second game, and a lot of the challenges are incredibly annoying. In all my previous playthroughs this wasn't enough for me to not 100% the game, but this time I couldn't handle it anymore by the third world, and so I did what I needed to do to get the platinum and beat it.
