I always love the classics but my niche interest is right around Re-Load to S & M

I actually heard Battery first via S&M. Would you have preferred that version? (Other than that it wouldn't technically be 80's at that point.)

Unfortunately for you azuarc, your 80's nominations are now all dropped.

Yeah, well, I kinda expected 80s to go first considering everything I tried to nominate kept getting rejected.

Informational Post:

Due to some unfortunate circumstances in my actual life, my activity here has taken a hit. (I think I've logged in 3 or 4 days out of the last 2 weeks which is quite unusual for me) but anyway I wanted to post and let everyone know that things are better now so I will hopefully be able to spend more time getting caught up here.

I do apologize for the standard post (since I am posting this in all of my current topics) but want thank you for your continued patience and understanding.

{ 807th Place } [70's][ 108th Place]
Song: "Sunshine On My Shoulders"
Band: John Denver
Album: Poems, Prayers & Promises
---{ 1971 }---
Genre: Folk
Score:[6.3][7.1][6.3][4.3][6.2][6.3][10.2] = [46.7] = [6.671]

Write-Up:
Here is a chill song by none other than John Denver. Sunshine doesn't really get me high but I kinda understand John's revelation here and plenty of other folks apparently enjoy his sentiment too as this is right up there in the best of Denver's best. As soft as it may be, I really kinda like the guitar play here. It's simple to play is what most pro guitar players might tell you but that doesn't make the main riff any less intricate. It feels like a love song of sorts as most of John's work typically goes imo. This song isn't all that catchy to me but I don't mind stopping and listening to it ocassionally. There was a tv show titled Sunshine that used this tune as it's main theme and I think it got covered maybe a couple times but you should definitely not listen to them especially Carly Rae Jepson's version. Even though the song was a solid #1 hit, it actually didn't hit the top of the charts until 3 years after it's release in 1974 becoming the 18th best song of the year.

Song: "Locked Out Of Heaven"
Band: Bruno Mars
Album: Unorthodox Jukebox
---{ 2012 }---

Write-Up:
I don't really hear it but I guess this is supposed to be Reggae Rock... perhaps the background is more Reggae than the rest of the song? I dunno. It isn't perfectly clear to me and a bit of distance from obvious Reggae imo. Anyway, another Bruno Mars sighting here and the 4th original song of his to drop. I couldn't avoid hearing this a s*** ton in 2012 but I'm not so sure I'd hold it up as anything super fantastic. It's got an ok beat but I feel like it's really shallow lyrically. Or maybe the message of the song is just uninteresting to me I suppose but I'm not a very big fan of this one either way. I think the first time I heard this song was on one of the Now cd's if I recall correctly. It would eventually be nominated for over 20 awards but I think the only one that it won was a "Most Performed Song of the Year" award which let's be honest... isn't really a significant achievement to boast about since almost any band could attain it imo. The song was selected as the lead single for the album (Bruno's 2nd solo album btw) and apparently the decision was met with skepticism by everyone except Bruno. He wanted it to be the promotional song for his album so he obviously got his way and even though it was a risky move, it turned out just ok. Wtf! lol. Gamefaqs literally just refused to allow me to post this with the link to the song I had (which is the official video to the song) because it had the consecutive letters f, a, and g in the link. >_> F***ing stupid a** gamefaqs censorship when their name literally looks like it has the same 3 letter word in it. SMDH.

Write-Up:
Gonna be honest here, I don't really like this song all that much. It's aggressively sharp tones and jagged rhythm isn't appealing in the least especially when I keep imagining that the lead singer is James Belushi. Why do I do that? ...uh, I have absolutely no idea.lol Perhaps it appeared in a movie with him in it at one point? I really don't know. Anyway, for anyone who isn't familiar with the band the lead member here by the name of Randy Bachman was actually a former member of the band The Guess Who. The song itself is a re-written song that he had worked on during his time with his previous band. Allegedly most people hated the chorus when he tested it with audiences which prompted him to re-write it. The original lyric of the song wasn't "takin' care of business" but a more awkward chanting of "white collar worker". Even just imagining the old lyric makes me like the song less for some reason lol. This song could arguably be the band's most notable song and it spent more time on the charts than any of their other songs with "You ain't seen nothing yet" in a close runner up position.

Song: "Just Like Heaven"
Band: The Cure
Album: Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me

Write-Up:
And we have yet another genre to add to our list of genres with the first Post Punk tune to make an appearance. I'm not really sold on the vocals but I kinda dig the rhythm and melody here. I've heard the song a fair amount over the course of my life but it really isn't a reminder to me of anything significant or of any importance. This happened to be the first song from The Cure to bring them success in the USA. If you get a chance to listen to just the instrumental, it's much more preferable imo. The band wrote the song while vacationing in Southern France. There were a few sources that suggested this as more of a "Gothic Rock" tune but I really hear more Post Punk than that which is why I stuck with it here. It kind of reminds me of Gran Turismo III even though it did not appear there but it does share similarities with "She Sells Sanctuary" which is one of the main supportive tunes for the game. (I say that because She Sells Sanctuary boots up in like 60% of the races for some reason) Interestingly enough the band names are even partially similar as SSS was released by a band called The Cult.

Write-Up:
A decent tune here from this decade that has been adopted in 2018 so to speak by none other than Team U.S.A. as their anthem for the Olympic games in Pyeongchang, Korea. I can see in some cases where this song has actually been improving the band's popularity but interestingly enough it is not their first outing. They actually made 4 albums prior to this with a different record label and their music was actually a bit more hardcore than what you are hearing here. The band had actually decided to change their sound moving into a more Pop-centric place from which they crafted all of the music for this album. It just may have been the right move for them too as their sales have increased better over time in comparison to their previous albums. It makes sense though as this is the "Pop" generation we are currently swimming in. *barf* lol

Write-Up:
Oh boy. This song brings lots of sad memories that aren't so much as sad as they are just really pointless times in my life. I was a kid and traveling along in the backseat of a car with a reckless driver metaphorically in life and it was always hard to tell when the car was going to run over some housepet or slam headlong into a tree. The older I get in life though the more I wonder if I was responsible for not hiding those metaphorical keys to the car and that things could have been different between my mother and I but what could I do honestly?... I was just a kid. Anyway, this song seemed to always be playing in the background in those saddest times in my life. It really is the perfect type of melancholic song for many sad situations though, wouldn't you agree? Oddly enough, it was never a #1 hit but it has seen similar success appearing in a multitude of other media such as tv shows, movies and even Budweiser commercials. The song has enough popularity that Stevie Nicks recorded 7 different versions from different events that are all available commercially or maybe even on youtube (I haven't confirmed this but it's likely).

Meh. I know a few people who are hardcore U2 fans but outside of a few of their songs, I never really got it tbh. Maybe their concerts were kick a**? I dunno. This is the first U2 song to drop here and possibly the only one in this ranking... *checking... nope, there are actually 3 more songs yet to be ranked. Ok I guess that shows just how keen on the band I really am lol. Anyway, this song just kinda meanders along in such a way that I lose interest rather quickly. It fared well on the charts and is something I can actually recall from childhood so there is that. Still, there are much better bands to hear in every genre that is comparable to the work these guys do imo. I care so little tbh that I don't have anything informative to give you in this write-up.

Write-Up:
Here is a pop song from this decade that I don't really mind. It's a closer match to my wife's favorite type of music but surprisingly she didn't even choose it for this ranking. It didn't take a whole lot of research and I was seeing this song on tops of favorite lists and in several chart lists. It wasn't surprising once I learned that it had topped the charts in over 20 countries and was Rihanna's 12th #1 of her career ranking her among Madonna and The Supremes for most #1 singles in the charts history. The song even became one of the best selling singles of all time selling over 7.5 million! I should almost feel bad that it isn't higher on this list but good thing this isn't a list about what the rest of the world listens to. For me, the beat is kind of there and isn't too exciting since there is little variation throughout the song but it isn't terrible either. I like the vocals and think they are alright but I'm not engaged lyrically and I really only have a slight temptation to bounce my knee to this one.

Coincidentally enough this song was originally intended for Rihanna but it was rejected by her team according to an interview in Oct. 2013. Would it have made the song better? It seems right up her alley but I'm not so sure honestly but wouldn't that be funny if it was Rihanna and still landed behind Diamonds here in this ranking. I guess we'll never know. Anyway, some folks still think it is Rihanna since vocally Daya is a close match. Because of this one thing is clear that when they were selecting the vocalist, they had a specific sound in mind. The Chainsmokers is still a relatively new band to my listening experience but I don't mind a few of their songs. I don't know much about them unfortunately so there are no meaty morsels for you to chew on here in that regard.

This song was originally released in the same year for the soundtrack to the movie Daredevil but I didn't list it here under that album since as I just stated the studio album that was released came shortly after in the same year. I didn't quibble over the priority here in a couple of rankings where this was the case and I prefer to list actual Albums featuring the release of the song anyway (as long as they are in the same year of release). Fuel is a band that I was listening to before they became mainstream. I actually owned Sunburn before Shimmer and Bittersweet hit the radio waves (or I like to think so). At the very least in my circle of friends at the time, I was the guy to introduce them to this music. It was at a time in my life when I was listening to a lot of Post Grunge and Grunge Rock and carried a stack of cd's that I'd share at the gym while working out or on the vegetable farm where we often processed our product in the main building. I've got some great stories about working at that farm but I'll save those for another time.

Oh man. Always a terrible coincidence in these rankings Snake and I'm sorry dude but... shortly after you posted I cringed knowing that this was coming. I don't know what it is but every time I post notifications or rally for support in one of my rankings, I always have to let down one of the few to actually respond as their items sit and wait on the immediate chopping block. (It's not just my rankings as I've seen this happen in many rankings. It's kind of a phenomenon though isn't it?) Anyway yeah... this sucks for you Snake as you fall to 1 remaining nomination. It isn't any secret by now for anyone that has paid attention to my Metallica commentary that I really don't have much of a preference for anything post-Newsted. Call me crazy but the band just is not the same creatively. I totally get that the band wanted to return to it's Thrash Metal roots but compared to the old stuff this just doesn't compare imo. One of the biggest changes I feel are that the old songs are almost poetic lyrically and the new stuff is just nonsensical raging/shredding imo. Where are all the great riffs that they used to create?

What do we have here? The 3rd in the last 5 rankings where I will say the name Rihanna apparently as I just did and as I was going to mention that this artist sounds an awful lot like her. So much so that I was pretty convinced it was her before I had checked into the tune a bit further. That must have been dollar signs in the eyes of whoever discovered this girl because she actually sounds pretty good. Hell I'd go as far to say that she could rival the likes of say... Rihanna! (Are we sure that they aren't the same person?) lol. Anyway, Rihanna is kinda hot am I rite? (This song is ok)

I can see this being pretty bad a** tune if you were dropping e and raving but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone really because it'd be kind of short for a rave song tbh. Although you could probably loop the song for 4 hours and no one at a rave would even notice. The beat does make you kinda want to jump around a bit but those days are far past me. Nothing against the melody or anything but the notes can get pitchy in some places. There is a certain reverb in my headphones that I am having trouble appreciating but other than that it's a decent song. I think I linked to this song from grabbing up another of Calvin Harris' hits while I was looking for filler. Considering that fact, it did rather well imo climbing almost half way up the list. It sort of makes sense as the song was nominated for Best Dance Recording at the Grammy Awards.

Write-Up:
Not a bad oldie from the 80's but not really in the cluster of tunes from the decade that I'd say I prefer. I mean... it's typical Phil Collins but he obviously has much better hits than this. The song would end up being the bands very first Top 10 hit. It is included in the Rock Song Index which documents the "7500 most important songs for the rock and roll era" but I think as we can evidence here in a list even this size, that is not really much of an accomplishment. It's yet another user nomination to take a hit and the nominator pool of songs grows ever smaller. I don't really hear it but allegedly Phil wrote this song in an attempt to mimic the Beatles. Um, if that is so then I gotta say he swung and missed. This doesn't sound like any Beatles song that I am familiar with.

Ah ok yeah. I remember that I use to dig this tune back in high school. I'm a little surprised that it got this high on the list though because I wasn't that into it. The song had the pleasure of getting many nominations including for Best Group Video, Best British Video, Best British Single and Best Alternative Video but sadly never took any of those awards home. It also climbed many charts but too failed to find success at the top getting a close 2nd a single time on Australia's Triple J Top 100 list. (I guess that's a popular list in Australia?) The song was covered by The Gorillaz sort of... The lead bandmember who wrote the song (Damon Albarn) also happens to be in the Gorillaz band. So the question is, is it technically covering a song if you are in both bands that play it?

We haven't talked about Jukebox rock in awhile but here is another common find in my experience. It's classic Queen any way you slice it and I've never met anyone that didn't like this song so it's got some things going for it. In a bar/pool hall setting it actually creates a nice jovial upbeat atmosphere that anyone can enjoy. The song has been covered many times and appears in several other forms of media as well. The cover to the single release is decent and an interesting thing about that release which also contained "Bicycle Race" is that both songs reference each other in the end. In this song in particular Freddy says "get on your bikes and ride" at the end. Other than that... I don't really have any interesting info for you here.

Write-Up:
I used to love this song a bunch but what is interesting is that even though I had owned a cassette of the album, it wasn't until 1998 when the movie "Dirty Work" came out that I gained interest in the song. It's a movie featuring Norm Macdonald where as you can guess, he is hired to do just about any task at an affordable cost and this was used sort of as the unofficial theme song to the movie. I think it's kind of hilarious that the phone number that Angus Young sings out in the song (which wasn't a complete number but sounds like one) was in fact an actual number that many folks have called. I guess the people that owned the perceived phone number opened up a lawsuit against the band in 1981 that never landed (since there was no complete number in the song). According to a statement by Angus, the song was a tip of the hat to an old timey cartoon titled "Beany and Cecil" that he had watched as a kid. I had to update the link to this song a few times. It seems someone is actively pulling all of the videos from youtube. Hopefully the new link sticks long enough for everyone to sample the song here.

Oh boy. The 70's list is so close to the Top 100. While that's not so great for the 70's getting there first, I am excited to finally be counting down the Top 100 in at least one of the decades. Here we have the 4th appearance of ABBA with a tune that I'm not all that big a fan of. It's ok but other than here it has never really shown up on any playlist I've ever created before. It is still one of ABBA's best songs in their discography and the 7th #1 hit I think. My wife really likes the group and has a couple of their unopened vinyls collecting dust in the closet somewhere because she believes they'll be valuable some day. There were a few covers of the song but the majority of them have been foreign from what I can see.

Here is something you don't see every day. A one-hit-wonder from the 00's. Maybe it's just me but I can't really think of too many bands that only had 1 hit song after the 90's but this one really shocks me. I owned the album at one point (maybe still do...) and it was ok. There are actually a couple other songs that I like on the album that I don't think ever hit the radio waves unfortunately. So Far Away, If I Am, Sometimes and Wanna Be are all worthy tbh. They are all kinda cheesy and melancholic in a decent way imo. I actually included Wanna Be on the list here because I like a good sappy love song from time to time. Obviously that will show up later.

This will be a quick write-up. Usher's got some good beats and does great at creating dance hits but the issue I have is that most of them are overplayed to death. It's great that he can take over the radio but it's not like you can bust out dancing while you are driving so it's difficult to enjoy the music unless you are in da club know what I mean? :P Anyway, yeah... never been a big fan of Usher. If I wasn't in a hurry atm I might have bothered to put some useful info in this post.

Write-Up:
Making a stop in the 80's tonight we have some Hall and Oates. The 2nd #1 hit for the band from their 9th album ouch. Only 2 hit songs in 9 albums isn't too great. Their other hits must have come after this album because I know they have at least 5 or 6 don't they?... One significant and interesting fact about this song is that the video was one of the few songs to air on MTV's 1st day of broadcast. There hasn't been very many covers of this tune and it has seen few appearances in other media as well. I guess the band almost wasn't going to play this song but the band's manager loved it and persuaded the members to use it. It was originally written for the sister of Daryl Hall's longtime girlfriend as she was interested in a music career but it never happened. Janna was a frequent songwriter for the band even though she is rarely heard as a vocalist.

Another trip to the 80's but this time we listen to a song that is chock full of female objectification. It's the kind of song that would offend many women of today had it been released and I'm not so sure it would have been so successful this day and age. The video is packed full of bikinis galore if that is what you are into though. It really makes you wonder how it's possible that we now live in a time where women can't even be told they look beautiful in the real world without risking a sexual harassment claim but there are literally hundreds on top of hundreds of songs, movies and other forms of media that we all grew up with that teach us that sexual objectification is ok. It's so confusing sometimes lol.

I don't know why but every time I hear this song I think it came from the 80's for some reason. It might be because of one of their other notable songs that I am subconsciously aware of but nothing is coming to mind atm. My wife actually selected this for the list when she selected "Listen to your Heart" which is another favorite of hers yet to be ranked. I don't really have any strong feelings one way or the other. It isn't a terrible song but apparently it isn't worthy of a 7 either. So close to the 7's btw. I think maybe another 20 songs or so and we'll be there...
