Hmmm I don't really read opm and mob for laughs.

I mean opm does live on the parody nature so I get that, but out the gate mob is trying to be a lot more compelling even though it also leans on satire to tell its story.

Yes I use satire and parody interchangeably

Anyways, 7 episodes through the Ten drama (out of 12 afaik)

Last arc is probably getting only two episodes at this rate. Even in spite of the cuts and changes, unless they start inventing new content whole cloth to make things consistent while making actually huge further cuts.

The last arc is three volumes long, and basically any cuts or changes to it will significantly dull its impact.

fml

Lefty I am absolutely learning your pain.

That said, it's still an alright watch if I remove any sort of context of it being an adaptation. But there's literally just no reason to watch it instead of reading the manga.

I have no faith you'll ever get around to reading the manga, seeing that you never finished Akagi.

(Also, it was a lot better relative to the manga in the first couple episodes, which are all I had at the time I recommended it)

Gotoubun no Hanayome 01

This was definitely the best one so far, and easily the main show I'd say I plan to continue watching for sure. The main character actually had a personality and was pretty funny -- a rare and generally good quality for harem comedy shows to have. I actually had a misunderstanding, thinking the show was about his own five sisters, so I was a little bit disappointed when I found out that the show is just about 5 sisters that are unrelated to him. Either way, it was still really funny and all of the characters seemed appealing in some way or another. I can see them getting a lot of mileage out of this premise. Easily enough for at least a 12-13 episode run.

first episode rankings

zero girl > delinquent girl > messy girl > obviously main girl > headphones girl

Funniest joke of the first episode was when everyone was just doing random shit and not studying, then zero girl is like 'Don't worry, Uesugi, I'm studying!' then it shows her notebook and the page is completely empty except for a random doodle on the corner of the page. aka the main study tactic of every high schooler.

Good characters, good humor, easy to relate to the premise even though its inherently unrealistic and a bit ridiculous. I'm officially declaring this the SLEEPER CRAB of the season.

the long awaited

the much requested

Yakusoku no Neverland

for my main man @TexasZea aka TEX aka zeaimo

EPISODE 1

wow first thing I literally remember noitaminA being a thing when I used to actually watch anime, many decades ago, when I was still a young 40 year old virgin. speaking of growing up I can say I basically hated the art style of them as little kids. I'm really glad that was only for the first minute and they aged the main characters up quickly. still not a huge fan of the style that the characters of the show are drawn in but it was much better.

so I sort of knew a bit about the premise of this going in. I'm not sure exactly where I absorbed that information and I don't think I was directly spoiled, but after a few minutes of watching the show it kinda clicked in my brain what people had been talking about before, and that this is the show that was being discussed. I definitely felt unnerved when the kids were all hanging out near the fence as a result, in the middle of the second game of tag, but honestly this effect might have worked even if I didn't know that something was up with the orphanage. they did an overall pretty good job with the tone.

the show has some unique ideas but some very predictable execution patterns. I absolutely knew almost instantly that conny was going to be the one who was marked for death, just because they always kill the most young and cute child character. sadly it didn't invoke any kind of emotional reaction from me, mainly because first episode deaths of poorly developed characters aren't that great for breaking the cold shell of a jaded piece of shit like me. the overall concept feels a lot more western than japanese so I'm kinda interested to see how it will develop from here.

if everything is actually done in a smart way, and revolves around strategy, they sort of set up an interesting end to the first episode; the characters have ALREADY lost the first move and they aren't even aware of it yet. the teacher knows they were there, but they don't seem to know that the teacher knows. I like Norman and Ray so far. the female main character is like whatever. it's funny that they gave all three of them top tier stats across the board with only slight differences between them. I guess that is needed for them to have a realistic chance of doing anything. it seems like Ray had already figured stuff out and knows what is going on. but maybe not? kinda unsatisfying to me that he'd be fine allowing all of this to happen if he knew, but it's also cool if he was able to figure it out. so I guess I'm ambivalent.

edit: sadly I feel like things will probably not be all that smart and strategic. it's gonna be more like code geass where we are told the characters are smart and sometimes get to see them do cool things. the main reason I believe this is because when the monsters smelled them hiding under the truck they were somehow able to disappear despite having no route they could have used to escape... but were also dumb enough to leave evidence behind that they had been there...

Same same. In fact it bothered me enough to check to see what happened in the manga. It's basically exactly the same except when the monster says he smells something, the truck and demons are now outside, having clearly already moved from the indoor location they were in before. Which actually doesn't really change things. But at the very least it seems by the time he smelled them they were at least gone for a while.

Edit: Further reading though it's actually the demon that finds the bunny and he claims it was under the car. So iono it doesn't seem to flow that well.

I'm actually super intrigued to get some confirmation as to whether Ray knew about the orphanage or not. and, like, he seemed super laid back and chill. did he have a plan? what exactly was this kid's fucking plan for when he got sent outside? if he thinks strategy is so important he probably should have been trying to gather more intel about what is outside before he got blindsided by two monsters, a demon, and the mom turning on him (which is presumably what would have happened)

also I have a theory that the fence literally does nothing, the small one out in the back yard. it's just, like, the same as an actual farm with fenced in animals. they could probably escape but they just don't do it because they were told not to.

cool. yeah, I definitely feel the constraints of feeling like I have "less time" to watch anime than I used to. I honestly don't even know if that's true or not, or if it just feels like it. but this topic has definitely got me watching more anime than I have in a long time. and I feel more enthusiastic about it.

also even though I've been going at what might be a sort of slow pace, and I feel pressed for time, it doesn't feel like a bad thing either. I sort of have this vague sense that there is always something for me to watch if I do have a short period when I'm not doing anything else. as long as I'm behind a few episodes of all of these shows then it's like... I'll always have 'something' I can turn on and watch.

Domestic na Kanojo ... 01

Pretty interesting, maybe I enjoyed it more than I should have because my expectations were so low. I thought it was just gonna be some trashy show but it was uh... like, the characters and the writing actually take themselves seriously? And it presents the story to you like you're actually supposed to care? I don't know for sure if I'd say that the writing is good enough to make that work but at least they tried. The romance between the mom and the dad was actually pretty touching, and how the kids on both sides wanted the marriage to happen because they really cared for them. It's not just random panty shots and whatever else for no reason. Of course right when I was thinking that we get a scene where he is just staring at the big sister while she's asleep on the couch wearing literally booty shorts and a tank top. Epic shit, my crab brothers.

Even though the characters weren't blood related there was actually a good line, an overall tone to the show, that really highlights what I like about incest series and just alternative romance in general. When Natsuo's friend is talking to him about how he definitely needs to give up on the teacher now, because since they are siblings that means it is basically impossible. But you can tell Natsuo still likes her, anyway. I mean, it's not going to go away just because someone tells him that he shouldn't like her or that it won't work.

The opening theme was really good. It's a little known fact but I'm actually a pianosexual. Man everything about the music and the singing was really awesome. It just hit all of my sweet spots for a lot of the kinds of things that I like to hear in songs. I did not expect that SPICY HOT opening to just come out of nowhere and obliterate my low expectations right from the start.

I probably like this more than Neverland already, so it's definitely going onto the watch list. Honestly I wasn't planning on watching any anime, except maybe one episode of something, but I might go into the second ep of this immediately.

low expectations for a lot of people and then the show actually being good. people generally enjoy a well done harem comedy, but most of them are done REALLY poorly. the show has good humor, which is subjective, but I think it's a lot more fair to say that the characters at least all feel very distinct and the show does a good job of conveying their personality in a really efficient and consistent way. of course I can only speak for the first episode but what I just described is one of the main elements of really good writing.

I don't know about things getting 'super hyped' since I can only speak for myself, not what the entire anime community is saying about a show, but I did like it quite a bit personally. definitely more than just 'alright.'

Domestic na Kanojo... 02

I can pretty confidently say that this show is responsible for making me feel 'all in' on this topic, although it's not really as simple as it sounds. Like, I don't think it's the best of the shows so far... but it's the one I 100% never would have watched if not for this topic, and then it turns out to be really good.

Episode 2 improved on the comedy, or maybe it's because I know the characters better I was able to laugh more. Rui and Natsuo arguing in the classroom was great. Rui's method of "trying" to wake someone up was hilarious, too. They gave a lot more personality and scenes to Rui this episode it felt like. But still there was a bit more development on Hina's character as well. Honestly at this point I am legitimately intrigued to know what is going on with her. The show has done a good job of making me care enough to WANT to know, and not giving me all of the answers right away. Hopefully they don't drag it out too long but I can't pre-emptively complain about that, now can I? I'll have to wait and see.

It's fantastic by harem comedy standards

But it's still a harem comedy which is a big mark against it in my book. I don't get along with anything with that genre in general unless the specific series has something else going for it.

Will keep watching, but It's gonna take something really special that it hasn't shown in the first two episodes for me to consider it anything more than somewhat above average.
