Oh yeah, honestly, up to this point, I would say that I think the anime is actually better than the manga. Sure, they cut some things here or there, but the presentation is just done so well. Really great adaptation.

having just finished this episode, the only thing I don't care for is internal monologues being replaced with everyone yelling their plans, weird decision. otherwise yeah it's been great

Yakusoku no Neverland ... 05

Man this show is fucking incredible. As someone who has read the source material and just rates it as 'pretty good' I feel like the directing, music, and everything else about the show makes every single moment feel way more tense, enthralling, and ultimately satisfying.

I literally can hardly wait for the next episode even though I already know what happens next. It is really that good.

I think it's more visually dynamic.

Honestly the trope of people thinking in their heads is actually kinda bad for, I don't know, time-sensitive media? Like in books or manga you can take your time reading a still picture but in film, animation or not, it's awkward unless your depicting something visually on screen.

yeah the external vs internal monologues stuff doesn't matter to me at all. the way people were complaining about them being cut on reddit I thought it was some death note shit where they get into the character's heads and each person has their own color filter and goes through their plans and ideas step by step.

then I actually read the manga myself. uh, no. lol.

it's literally just exposition delivered as narration. which the anime does by simply... showing you what happened, instead having the character tell you what happened.

Boogiepop 10

one of the best episodes so far, probably the best. I guess all of the resources went into adapting Boogiepop At Dawn. lmao!

pretty awesome that I can just watch the rest of this story arc immediately too. I did already read it awhile ago but this is the one I probably remember the least, so I'll probably just be pleasantly surprised by whatever happens next in the story. Miyashita was super creepy, awesome, and charismatic as always.

seeing Kamikishiro and Nagi as younger friends was neat, too. this is one of those things where I think the anime presentation helps a bit because you get to actually "see" how different they were when they were younger. rather than text just describing the difference and you have to imagine it, but you already have a solid idea in your mind.

Most anime never reach the end of source material anyway. Personally I don't like it when animes skip or rush important content.

Boogiepop 11

dr kisugi was pretty freaking awesome, and creepy. a few well done things of note I guess uhh... I think they did a pretty good job of conveying how when people usually asked her questions, she usually responds by saying "well (so and so) would say (this)" instead of just answering what she, herself, thinks. and she starts doing it less after she has gained her powers. this perfectly matches up with Boogiepop's theory of "normal people" getting easily caught up in the flow, but once kisugi becomes an "enemy" she starts to have her own strong will and identity. DEEP LORE.

this also matches the identity of some (most? all? arguably) of the villains of the previous arcs. at least the human villains like Saotome and Jin, who were pretty normal people that got caught up in the flow and were influenced by more strong willed, supernatural forces.

the other detail I really liked was how they showed kisugi's fear, and her aversion to even making eye contact with others, by using the camera. they'd usually have shots of just the lower half of someone's face while kisugi was speaking to them, except for pretty crucial moments when her most "strong willed" self emerged.

of course the highlight of the episode was Boogiepop just coming directly to the hospital basically to challenge her. I mean you can say it was a coincidence that Touka was there -- I do think a lot of this series just uses all of the chuuni stuff as a metaphor for mental health issues and other stresses of modern human life, it's one of the things I find very interesting about it -- but I mean... at the same time, one of the first things Boogiepop said was that he already knew kisugi was an enemy.

this arc is really doing a great job of tying together the theme of the series as a whole and making the world feel a lot more clear and fleshed out. time to keep watching!

Boogiepop 12

Suiko soooooo freaking good. I can't think of many characters in any series really that have so little screentime but that I love so much. Some interesting connections that manifested from her scene in this episode;

Okay so Suiko's goal is that she was trying to find someone with the ability to "break through."

she meets Seiichi here and talks to him about her powers, among other things.

the kid who wrote the letters to Seiichi was killed by the Towa Organization because he had the ability to make people "break through." Suiko and this boy never got the chance to meet, even though they had abilities and goals that perfectly matched each other. and it's a cool form of dramatic irony that the characters never even knew that they had completely missed the chance to find each other. that's something only the audience knows.

the first book also has a more dense conversation between Nagi and Suema about why Nagi became the way she is, and it has a lot to do with Seiichi's dying words; 'what do you think Normal is?' pretty good question considering the tangled mess of morally gray ambiguity we have going on here now. it would probably take me like 10 posts just to try and discuss that considering almost every conversation somehow revolves around this core concept, and the characters still haven't really figured it out or come to any conclusions.

like consider the following: Mo aka "Sasaki" is definitely an evil character, and he works for an organization that we've generally seen as villains. Nagi in particular would have multiple really strong reasons for hating him. and yet they end up working together because of how Towa is competing against the kisugi in this scenario. it's definitely significant that "Sasaki" was changed so drastically after his encounter with the boy that could influence people's personalities and unlock their potential just by speaking a few words to them, though.

also the PLAYS. kisugi wants to kill Nagi because Nagi is fearless, basically the type that she prefers to taste the fear of. we think that Nagi has figured out who the killer was, because of some clue, but then at the end we find out the kisugi intentionally left a clue so that Nagi would find it, because Nagi was her target.

Boogiepop 13

Oh yeah. I watched all of these together, including this one without stopping, but I fell asleep after and forgot to do a write up. Really good continuation, and satisfying wrap up to what is easily the best arc in this anime. I actually remembered the insulated suit thing from the book, it's one of the few parts from Boogiepop at Dawn that I specifically remembered.

Boogiepop has so much charisma. I like how there were scenes where he is not even visible on screen and somehow he is still dominating it with his presence.

Okay now we're getting into the territory of novel material that I haven't actually read before and... it's really interesting so far. I like the start of this story arc at least. No idea what is going to happen next but I'm excited to find out. The scene between Niitoki and the King of Distortion was the best part, probably.
