Rocketman was surprisingly good, especially considering it had the same director as Bohemian Rhapsody, which I thought was very cookie-cutter. He actually decided to have fun this time.

Not the credited director right? Considering how much controversy surrounds Bryan Singer these days.

Watching The Usual Suspects now is going to feel awkward.

Bohemian Rhapsody was mainly Bryan Singer's effort. Fletcher was just called in to essentially salvage the production, and from what I heard, was forced to adopt Singer's style.

Watched I Am Mother and The Perfection tonight on Netflix. I liked both. There's something about watching a movie like I Am Mother at night alone that I really enjoy. A really small casted kind of isolated type movie. Interesting premise and kept me guessing about what the truth really was.

The Perfection was kind of a wild ride. Twists and turns and stuff. The end fucked me up, especially when Charlotte took that knife to the arm, was graphic as fuck and made my stomach do flips. Gore doesn't usually get to me like that but goddamn lol. Would reccomend.

I don't know if I can endure Men in Black and Shaft tonight...

Is summer blockbuster season usually this rough, or is 2019 a particularly bad year for mainstream film?

Speaking of which, it seems Toy Story 4 is receiving great reviews. Not terribly surprised TBH, but I feel like in retrospect Toy Story 3 was not as good as the first two so my interest in the series has waned.

Usually we don't get so many stinkers, I feel like this year is a little rougher but it might just be the way studios aligned their slates so it's just more obvious how much trash there is

We're probably going to be going through a post golden age MCU slump for a year or two while Hollywood tries to figure out where to go next. The lack of Fox will also hurt. Less studios, less variety

To be fair, I never heard of this movie before literally 12 minutes before getting to the theater today. My friends called me up and I immediately started driving, so I had no idea what this was other then "Zombie Movie". I didn't even know that it was going to be filled with a bunch of big names.

Watching the trailer just now...just a warning, the trailer does not represent the final product.
But hey, you may like it!

Good call. Jim Jarmusch is one of America's best directors.

Anyway, I don't go to the movies so I'm usually watching a bunch of old stuff. I just saw my 35th Mikio Naruse film, Travelling Actors from 1940. It was a nice little comedy. Two itinerant actor brothers portray a horse in a play (the younger and less experienced of the two stuck in the ass-end), but are booted from the show due to a disagreement with the troupe's patron. They're then replaced with a real horse, which the elder brother doesn't take lightly. The jilted performers eventually get their revenge in the film's humorous closing moments.

I'm still not willing to say I like Naruse as much as Ozu or Mizoguchi, but he's definitely among the great classic Japanese filmmakers. And I'm only about halfway through his surviving work.

I watched Mandy with some friends last night, and god I love that movie. We don't get enough movies that seem to exist solely to obliterate the senses. Nicholas Cage at his best mixed with some of the most hypnotic imagery I've encountered in recent years.

Saw the original Poltergeist for the first time. I wouldn't call it a masterpiece, but it's still a very effective horror classic. On a scale of 1-10 I'd give it an 8. If anyone wants me to review the film in greater detail feel free to ask.

This movie definitely got me hyped up for Stranger Things 3 though!

Oh I guess I'll run down movies I've seen recently

The Perfection (2019)

Man it's hard to say this is objectively good, because it probably isn't. It's wacky and the tone is kind of inconsistent but it's definitely enjoyable to watch.

The Miseducation of Cameron Post (2018)

Pretty good. Feels weirdly redundant after Boy Erased also came out in 2018 with the same concept and was probably the better of the two.

Had a lot of fun with Child's Play! Not anywhere near perfect but it was very clever, especially with its new portrayal of Chucky and the AI/IoT fueled horror. I'm a sucker for when horror is so timely. The music and Mark Hamill's performance were also standouts. I wouldn't mind seeing more of this take on the franchise.

I finally watched Into the Spider Verse. Holy shit it was soooo good. I went in kinda expecting it to not live up to all the praise just because I felt like it was getting too much praise and it wouldn't live up to the high expectations that come with that but boy did it! Laughed so much and felt the feels and everything. And that after credit scene was one of the best I've ever seen! Just so good all around. I'm super excited now for future sequels.

Gonna go see Far from Home tomorrow for even more spidey goodness.
