saw Booksmart and Pet Sematary

Booksmart was mostly excellent, but it suffered from a few too many genre cliches for my taste most notably the "best friends for life get in a big fight but then immediately make up" felt forced. Great cast though, with Kaitlyn Dever and Billie Lourd especially standing out. Definitely one of the better teen party movies.

Pet Sematary was a book I never really thought would translate that well into a movie, and now two movies later I still stand by that. I think it would make for a really neat Twilight Zone/Black Mirror episode, but just doesn't really have enough plot to fill the runtime, and isn't deep enough to use the time for quiet reflection. It's especially hurt by the fact that the big "twist" 2/3s of the way into the movie everyone already knew was coming because 1. the story is 36 years old and 2. it's literally in the trailer. Changing up that last 3rd doesn't really add anything of substance to what was already a substance-lite movie.

Seen lately:

My Days of Mercy

Waited two years for this because I'm a huge fan of both Page and Mara. The performances are mostly great and the subject matter is intriguing, the subtlety of the writing isn't always quite where it needs to be to handle the complicated subject matter. A little bit disappointing but still a solid romantic drama.

Wonder Park

There's a lot of good and a lot of bad here. I'm kind of a sucker for animated movies like this that celebrate creativity, and it's a pretty great film to look at, with bright, fun and sometimes surreal visuals. Story-wise, not great, as it all feels kind of dumbed down. The humor in particular misses significantly more than it lands.

Good Time

This has been on my radar for 2 years now because of hype over Robert Pattinson's performance, and goddamn it is excellent. This wasn't something I'd have thought he was even capable of. Beyond that, it's great, as a crime gone poorly only goes worse and worse to the point that you're torn and whether you want to root for him or against him.

The Lion King got an applause in our theater when it was complete, and the scores for it have been great when you are polling the general audience, gaining an A rating from CinemaScore. The thing is, the movie is good. It's The Lion King, how can it not be good. But the big issue for me was that despite Disney doing a phenomenal job on the graphics and making everything so photo-realistic... therein lies the problem. The characters, real-life animals, are unable to convey very much emotion through their facial expressions. They were limited by keeping it "realistic", and as such many scenes that should have conveyed power felt flat. Honestly it's heartbreaking to me in a way, to see one of the greatest films of all time redone in a way that just wasn't... nearly as good. It was never going to be better, but it's hard to say this was even a fitting little tribute to the masterpiece, like I felt Aladdin was earlier this year.

I don't know. I mean, it's so hard to put into words.

Ranking 2019 films (that I've seen):

Child's Play
Shazam!
Toy Story 4
Spider-Man: Far From Home
The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part
Aladdin
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
Us
Pokmon Detective Pikachu
Dumbo
Alita: Battle Angel
The Lion King
Crawl
Ma
Brightburn
Escape Room
The Secret Life of Pets 2
Missing Link
Fighting with My Family
UglyDolls
Wonder Park
Pet Sematary
Annabelle Comes Home
The Prodigy
Happy Death Day 2U
The Curse of La Llorna
Midsommar

As you can tell, I have a definite preference for what I watch in theaters and it consists of animation and horror. Sometimes I'll see other stuff. Yes, there's no Endgame on that list. I never saw all the Marvel movies so I figured I'd just not bother with it. Until I can sit down and watch them all, I probably won't watch that one. I'm fine with seeing certain ones featuring heroes I'm up to date with though.

I get what your saying and agree completely. It was a great movie, but it at times it felt like listening to an audio drama with an animal documentary on in the background or something. Like it was kinda disconnected.

It had some cool, fun elements to it. In general, I thought the creature design was top-notch. Hellboy visiting the Baba Yaga was also great sequence. I definitely got some bad Mummy flashbacks with the main antagonist though.

I don't want to say that people shouldn't see The Lion King, but don't see it and then turn around and complain about Disney's live-action remakes. Although I'll admit that I'm not so big on Disney's animated catalogue to begin with, so I'm not really the audience for these films to begin with. The Jungle Book does interest me a little though.

Honestly I'm beginning to appreciate The Last Jedi more. People clearly want to know what they're in for before seeing movies nowadays and that's a bit depressing.

first of all, the lion king isn't live-action >_>

well, i thought this wasn't good. i agree that trying to tell this story with realistic-looking animals, who have these blank stares on their faces at all times, just didn't work.

plus almost all of the changes they made to the original sucked. why was be prepared only 10 seconds long? as doug walker said in his review, why the fuck was can you feel the love tonight in broad daylight?

you know what this reminded me of? the gus van sant psycho remake. it's a shot-by-shot remake of the original for the most part but because of some glaring flaws it didn't work nearly as well (psycho shouldn't be in color, vince vaughn isn't anthony perkins), and the changes they DID make were crap and made no sense.

i did enjoy myself watching it in the theater because seeing all the familiar scenes again brought me back to my childhood. but yeah, this wasn't a good remake.

still dumb to call it that tho i wish people would just say "i went to see the bad lion king today"

i generally find IMDb to be a lot more reliable for scores than RT (the lion king does have a decent score on IMDb, to be fair).

An 89% on Rottentomatoes (where practically every other movie has a positive score too), a 7.2 on IMDb, and a 3.0/5.0 on Letterboxd. Audience scores certainly aren't consistent across sources.

I wouldn't say I dislike it, and I doubt anyone could really say they didn't like the movie outside of saying it based on some principle you have against its existence.

I mean I don't get how critics and most of you seem to adore Midsommar, because it's downright terrible in my opinion, but I accept that's the way it is.

They cut out his friend Thomas also being Hush and the entire thing just focused on Riddler. They skip over a TON in favor of focusing heavily on Batman/Catwoman's relationship and that bit isn't even good

also the animation doesn't do Jim Lee's art justice, looks mediocre at best

they tried setting it in the New 52 universe and movie continuity so sometimes the movie wastes time and puts a brake on the plot to remind you that you should watch Reign of the Supermen and the Suicide Squad movies

fuck off with that shit just adapt the damn comic faithfully

I just gotta talk about how dumb the Batman/Catwoman relationship is in this movie

The entire movie Batman and Catwoman are all over each other, while in and out of costume. I assumed they knew each others' identities because any time they're in a room together they just start making out (which gets old very quickly). Batman even makes comments about how he thinks it's time they go out and then they hard cut to Bruce and Selina on a date.

But then near the end of the movie Batman is like "Catwoman I gotta tell you something, I know you're Selina Kyle" and she's like :O and then he's like "by the way I'm Bruce Wayne" and she's like :OOOOO and I'm like ???????? she didn't know????????

so I guess Catwoman thought she was actively mackin' on two hot dudes and then they conveniently (for her) turned out to be the same hot dude and Batman was in no way upset she was kinda cheating on him with him. Absolutely bizarre. Not sure if that was in the comic or if I'm just forgetting that.

Focusing the movie on the buildup and payoff of that reveal was really dumb IMO don't even bother calling the movie "Hush" if you ain't gonna adapt Hush right.

Spent my day at the theater, watched The Art of Self-Defense, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Yesterday.

Art of Self-Defense was such a bonkers experience, a black comedy that almost morphs into surrealist horror while rarely losing its edge? A big surprise for me.

OUATIH is more Tarantino goodness, easily among his best. The ending has me feeling so many ways.

Yesterday was as expected, an entirely bland experience that doesn't really tackle its subject matter as well as it could have. Instead, it's a by-the-numbers rom-com.

Bumpo.

Saw The Queen's Corgi this past Sat. Not a bad little film, Cliched plot of the predecessor wanting the new guy outta the way but if this it was dark age Disney movie people'd be lapping it up (no pun intended). Fair bit of Innuendo, A Doggie fight club and oh, yeah a couple of murder attempts. The depiction of Trump isn't ENTIRELY inaccurate. :) Kind of tanked but some thing aren't to everyone's taste. *I* liked it and that's good enough for me.

May be a bit "too British" for some of you lot here. Even for some of the biggest anglophiles who worship the almighty Doctor, no names named.

I needed a filler picture so wtf not?

Now, I'm about ready to see TLK. So far the majority of reviews are good and I did enjoy the original when I was a young Hardcoooore (When he was a Young Hardcore!) but have ultimately found it a tad overrated as it tends to walk just about every poll/comp/contest its entered in. Probably this weekend.

Seen the Dora trailer... Kinda 50-50 about it. But there's no law saying I have to see it sober (thank god for Licensed Screenings)

And, yes. There was an ending applause, which was kind of audible despite it being a moderately sparsely attended screening (Early evening, plus the movie's been out like 3wks).

I initially dismissed the former but I said "Fuck it" and went to a Lunchtime show. Everyone as cracking up.
Hollywood was enjoyable too especially with Di Caprio, Pitt and Izzo in a total shitfight with the Manson family member who came to waste them. Also the scene involving Bruce Lee being dashed into a car leaving a big-ass dent..

both were great

Ready Or Not was just a really solid horror comedy that delivered pretty strong on both aspects

Peanut Butter Falcon was wholesome and just really tugs on your heartstrings, in addition to having an excellent (and banjo-driven) soundtrack and a surprisingly great performance from Shia LaBeouf. Highly recommend.
