Here we be talkin' 'bout animu and mangos and related topics.

Currently watching Kobato, it still feels like it came out in the wrong anime era lol.

Now, as to the subject of isekais, Re Zero is probably my favorite, but Reincarnated as a Slime was great and I'm eagerly awaiting its second season. Re Zero is thankfully finally getting some more eps too, just don't remember exactly when. Posted it in the last topic, but I don't consider Inuyasha an isekai, since it's supposed to be set in the same world, just in the past. Sure there's stuff there that no longer exists, but it's supposed to be the same world iirc. Hyped for shield hero and patiently waiting for it.

If yall dont mind im going to repost my last big post:

Ugh what to watch now? I have been cremating anime good anime.
I have a few episodes left of these shows to watch but I want the rest to release first before I catch up because im at a good stopping point on Attack on Titan and Rising of the Shield Hero. I guess I could catch up on Jojo part 5 or start Alderamin on the Sky.

Boy have these shows been GREATTT, I wasnt too keen on AoTS2 but S3 has been stellar.

Can we talk about everyones favorite Isekai?
Also Shield Hero may take place as best Isekai ever. High contenders were Re;Zero and Overlord but I realize both have flaws.

Overlord doesnt have the best animation and is a bit hammy and cliche at times but make up for it by having on of the most unique premises I have ever seen.

Re;Zero has some really good twists and an interesting world but its main character is both its savior and cancer. Like god I'm sorry but Subaru is probably the most annoying protagonist I've ever seen.

Those two were my top contenders but of course I cant forget Konasuba with its hilarity. I personally loved GATE because I loved the concept of modern military vs medieval combat. Sword Art Online gets a lot of flak but I truly love the first arc and think everyone should at least watch that.

Grimgar was great and pretty watercolorings were great. My friends complaints about the show were that it had too much exposition, but to me it felt more like the main character reading us a grand tale from his journal entries.

I never understood the hype for No Game No Life, Although I did watch it through til the end of the very small amount of episodes. Actually havent seen Log Horizon suprisingly.

Sadly I dont enjoy Reincarnated as a Slime all that much, its got a lot of the same cliches as a lot of other shows have though there wasnt much that was all that redeeming to me. A lot of the characters designs were really bad too, dwarf, lizardmen both come to mind. And I like the orc people more before they evolved. I have seen a lot of OP character shows and I just think this isnt the way to do one, there isnt any catch, no negative consequences, nothing to overcome, he's just OP and almost nothing can stop him.

Right off the bat, I'll say I enjoyed Monster Rancher more than Digimon >_>

And Overlord is probably the thing I'm most interested in but haven't fully watched.

I also remember enjoying:
-.Hack
-Now And Then, Here And There
-Inuyasha

Of course, if we're counting non-anime, then probably some version of Alice in Wonderland or Wicked. Or maybe Sliders.

Sekai means world. Isekai means another world. It's a genre about characters going to another world. While technically any space show that goes to mars might count it really means going to essentially another universe. Something like inuyasha that is technically time travel is kinda borderline. I'd call it an isekai because the world is different enough to the modern world but I feel an argument could be made for either side really.

It really exploded since SAO came out. Before that it was frequently shoujo like escaflowne or twelve kingdoms for whatever reason. Now it's in it's modern JRPG style fantasy world for the most part.

Back to inuyasha, it IMO contains the important element. Learning about a new fantastical setting through the lens of someone from our setting. Just my thoughts on it though.

I feel like they don't make shows in the style of inuyasha anymore. I thought it was a really enjoyable set up. A real escapism type of show about someone from our world literally escaping to adventures in another world. It seems the adventure format died with weekly shonen or something. I suppose made in abyss actually had the adventure format and I loved that show for it even if it was a little too grim to serve as a pleasant escapist fantasy.

The other 2 I can really think of with the format are one piece and pokemon. A group of people traveling the land seeing new places and having adventures. I really wish there were more of that or really even one solid example of it as I think all the shows I mentioned have significant flaws.

I read Chikan Otoko the other day.. almost finished the whole thing in one sitting. Holy shit, that manga was amazing, and impossible to put down once you're invested.

It may actually beat out Train Man as my favorite manga based on a true story, which is saying a lot. It absolutely deserves its status as one of the top 100 rated manga on MAL.

Going by the literal definition of isekai, I give it to Twelve Kingdoms. Fantastic anime, and it thumbs its nose at the "I am the chosen hero(ine)" trope.

If we are sticking strictly to the "trapped in a game" genre, then I give it to .hack//SIGN, followed by Log Horizon.

YoukaiSlayer posted...
I feel like overlord took too long for the main character to go evil.

I think it was necessary for this devolpment as it gives the impression of him slowly loosing his humanity. Also when you finally reach that point, you are like "holy fuck he's the bad guy". Another theory is that He lost all humanity from the begining and that if you look at all of his actions everything was meant to benefit or further his goal of conquering the world.

Been playing Monster Hunter World. Doing better on this than I did on Tri. Don't like the latest area I've found. Played using a great sword for a while, and though it can land some heavy shots, it's so damn slow. Switched to what I remember using in Tri, the hammer, and it's working out much better. Love thunking monsters in the face with a charge attack. Doesn't do nearly as much damage as the sword could do, but I'm more mobile and doing a lot better.

What countless others? .hack//sign was awesome, but it was far from popular and focused a lot more on the interpersonal relationships and actions of players in an MMO whereas SAO was escapist fantasy. /hack//sign is what MMOs are actually like and SAO is what people wish they were like.

Also .hack//sign's main character was a girl, despite the in game character being a boy.

As for other pre SAO isekai you have stuff like 12 kingdoms (shoujo), escaflowne (shoujo), Fushigi Yuugi (shoujo), Magic Knight Rayearth (shoujo), Kyou kara Maou! (shoujo), Harukanaru Toki no Naka de: Hachiyou Shou (shoujo), inuyasha is a bit of mix but it's a girl being transported to a fantasy world. Hell even wizard of oz and alice in wonderland feature female protagonists transported to a fantasy world.

Now, I said frequently shoujo, we still had stuff like zero no tsukaima, it just wasn't all that common. Isekai clearly started booming with SAO and we got SOOOO many jrpg fantasy world isekai since then.

Like it or not, though, the genre is here to stay ... to the point that it has already been popping up in e-book format (as 'LitRPG' or 'gamelit') on Amazon for years. If it's popular enough to consistently make money in English, then it's not going anywhere. I mean, hey, sci-fi / fantasy trash harem anime are still happening, and it's been a quarter century since the original Tenchi Muyo.

The only annoyance for me is that it's SAO that started the current isekai boom, and there are many better anime in the genre than that one.

Yeah SAO is definitely responsible for the explosion of isekai we've had in the years following the first SAO.

Same goes with fortnite, we will see battle royale's for years to come.

Too bad we can't have explosive popularity with the collectathon 3D platformer genre. I'd love to get me some more titles like banjo kazooie, Mario 64 Pat in time and ukulele.

I'd credit PUBG with causing the br boom. Also, I don't really consider SAO and settings like it to be strictly isekai. More of a sub genre and very closely related, but not exactly the same.

Yeah it is definitely somewhat ironic that SAO kicked off this current isekai boom but isn't really an isekai. Even by what I consider most important, all the other people are new to this world so it doesn't really count. I guess actually the alicization arc is what I'd consider isekai, but nothing up to that point.

I'm very sad about the popularity of what I'd consider the 3 main trapped in an MMO anime. .hack//sign, SAO, and log horizon. I always view it as, hack//sign is what MMOs are actually like (people trolling and bored and escaping from shit lives while afking in town at max level), log horizon (what people think MMOs are like, but which would require infinite content to exist), and SAO (what people wish MMOs were like, including me in a lot of areas). This is excluding the trapped in the game element and just looking at the games themselves.

I really liked the way .hack//sign portrayed its characters, getting the various online persona's eventually matched to brief black and white glimpses of their real life. To me that's a lot of what it actually feels like being at end game in an MMO. You know these people so well in game but you just get little bits and pieces of information about who they are in life. I especially liked BT in it.I thought the scene when she logs back in after saying she quit the game for good and it shows the high school reunion letter torn up in the garbage was masterful. A clear motivation of why she wanted to run away back into a game that's been boring to her for months and offers no value outside of escapism and social interaction without the baggage of her real life.

And yet no one cares about .hack//sign. Meanwhile flashy and adequate SAO gets all the attention and log horizon gets the praise for being "what it'd really be like" despite both having flat unrealistic characters and having basically nothing to do with MMOs aside from background setting.

.hack isn't very centralized. You have different teams and writers and directors working on different things and the games of course by a different team. IMO .hack//sign is really the only thing worth watching and even then you need to know its a very slow burn, and don't watch it for action. IIRC .hack//sign is basically the beginning of everything, it's like fate/zero is for fate and can be watched by itself with no problems. I'm also fond of the dub which is how I originally saw it but it's honestly pretty low quality.

The series has a reboot in the G.U. trilogy of games and that whole storyline is separate from the first one and takes place in a sequel to the MMO from the original. It has an anime that's ok. Not really anything special but watchable. Then there are a few spinoff anime from various parts in the time line that are shorter and of varying but generally low quality. The one with a character being played by 3 girls is ok if I'm remembering it right.

The .hack franchise can be intimidating, since it was launched as a multimedia effort involving anime, books, games, manga, etc., but I recommend watching SIGN as the entry point, though it is not technically the beginning (because that spot belongs to the .hack//A.I. Buster novels, long out of print).

YoukaiSlayer posted...

Because of how old it is. I mean, .hack started being a thing back in 2001, and that is ancient by modern anime and JRPG standards, a whole decade before SAO. ... It really was way ahead of its time, and I get the feeling it's a bit too cerebral for today's crop of isekai / trapped-in-a-game fans.

That's the real bummer of the whole thing. MMO players are a treasure trove of psychological issues to explore in a trapped in a game setting and only .hack did it and even then really only .hack//sign did it of what I've seen.

Finished up Kobato. Was sappy, but not terrible to watch.

Been playing some more Monster Hunter World too. Killed my first rathalos and diablos. Diablos is a butthole and its moves have too damn much range. Thankfully, I've gotten a bit better with my hammer. Favorite move to use is the one that lets me go cartwheeling through the air swinging my hammer. Shame it requires me to be sliding to use, but it's great when I can use it. Think I'm about to go to a new area, so I'm wondering what scary butthole awaits me next.

Monster Hunter World is definitely the shortest to really get into. Partially because its actually short but they also really cut down the grind for low rank and there isn't a g-rank. I think I beat the final boss at like 50-60 hours.

They also mixed the single and multi questlines fully so if you go in solo the monster is ultra nerfed and each hunt takes like 5-20 minutes including tempered elder dragons (the hardest thing in the base game). Event quests shake things up a bit and post game is ultra grindy for no real reason. MHW is the monster hunter designed to appeal to people that don't like monster hunter (and it worked, sold an assload).

I'm liking the game. In the beginning of high rank. I actually managed to take down hr anjantha. Was sure I was boned after I carted really fast the first time. Then I carted a second time, but figure, what the hell, may as well keep smacking him and hope for parts to drop. Ended up actually killing the thing and did most of the damage with my last life. Went and took down a hr barroth, which dropped a mat I needed to upgrade my hammer, so I took down a second one and upgraded my hammer. Stopped right after making the new hammer, so I haven't tried it out yet. Gonna go for a hr jyuratodus next and then probably back to anjantha, since I think it drops the bones I need for the next hammer upgrade.
