I'm back. The title screen now shows a house/church place, doesn't look like it's on Rokkenjima.

'Have you figured out the structure of this world?' No, not really. And what does it mean for the difficulty to be 'equal'?

I'm now an unknown person in that house. He mentioned Grandfather, could it be one of Kinzo's grandchildren?

What. That's not what Beatrice looks like.

Not sure what is going on here. That witch is named Beatrice, called the Golden Witch and has a form of golden butterflies. But her personality is opposite of the Beatrice we know.

An Endless Witch can fix broken things over and over. This is what evil Beatrice has been doing, with the things being human lives. She is also called the Endless Witch.

Beatrice was the girl, she trained as a witch and got all the same powers as her Teacher, even taking up the same name (or was it has name all along?)

Funny how easy it is to become a witch. All she had to do is meet one and tell her.

This is a whole new level of torture. I can see even that becoming boring sooner or later if Battler continues to resist

On that note, I have no closer than Battler to figuring out how a human could commit those crimes.

Back to the real world we go. Always loved that opening sequence. This time it jumps right to the boat to Rokkenjima, so guess we're getting straight into the meaty part with less dragged out drama for this episode!

The relationship between Kinzo's children is something I want expanded on, beyond arguing about the inheritance. Maybe Beatrice will be kind enough to leave at least two of them alive in the first twilight...

As if I don't dislike him enough already, Krauss now reveals himself as a sexist dinosaur. He basically says that women should be tools. Small wonder Eva is at his throat all the time.

Now I am fully aware this is what Japan is like, and Eva is naive for thinking she could have a chance of succeeding Kinzo, but that's not something you would say to your sister if you have empathy.

Everything I just said about Krauss, multiply that by 10 times and you probably get Kinzo.

I mean I do understand where they come from. Kinzo thinks his children didn't become what he wanted, Krauss felt threatened by by Eva and his inability to live up to his father, and Eva got discriminated against.

I don't know who started all of this, but Kinzo had to bear the most responsibility for such a dysfunctional family.

Young Eva looks great, then I noticed the blue eyes in contrast to current Eva's purple-ish. That has to be Beatrice up to no good again, you can't trick me.

This is like 20+ years before the main story, so Beatrice shouldn't be at full power, and no one except the furniture servants should be able to see her right? And it's not her style to disguise as someone. Argh, I'm getting confused again.

Not sure 'reveals' is the right word. 'Reiterates', perhaps. He spent most of his time alive in EP1 patronizing his wife, after all.

Or it is all inside Eva's head and I'm overthinking. The blue eyes though, there has to be a reason, it would all be so simple if the eye colours match.

Well back then I didn't really think him as sexist because he was a dick to pretty much everyone else, not just Natsuhi.

Doesn't look like this is in Eva's imagination with the young version talking about magic.

A few moments ago Eva said 'It would be great if I get a son and have him succeed the family'. Now she says stuff about grown-up George and Jessica...

How ironic it must be for the sexist Krauss to have a daughter as his successor.

And it's all a dream. Fuck.

Also, Eva already has been Head of the Ushiomiya Family. For a few hours in Ep1 when Kinzo, Krauss and Rudolf are all dead or missing.

Or is the dream some magical influence?

Eva is tough on the outside but is actually a big softie. Kind of an opposite to Rosa.

Looking at how differently she acts next to Hideyoshi, and all the others, she is capable of being both ladylike/womanly and strong/independent. In fact I dont think these two types of attributes are that much of a clash.

Yawn It's the romance stuff again. I not against it in general but I just don't care much about it in Umineko. Please let it be a footnote in this episode.

I got hit by a jump scare. ffs

At last Beatrice appears in the human world. It shows what happened to Maria when she was searching for the Rose in the garden. There are a few more perspectives and the cousins have a slightly different chat on the beach, otherwise almost everything is the same as Ep 1 iirc.

Even with a nice Teacher, Beatrice eventually became rotten. Looks like Maria is already Beatrice's apprentice, so I can imagine what Maria would become as a witch.

Maria, the Endless Witch, torturing another unfortunate family for fun with unspeakable cruelty while repeating 'Kihihihihi' and 'Uuuuu' over and over. 'Uuu, you are furniture!' 'Uuu, die!!'
....this is too terrible to comprehend. I would take Beatrice over witch-Maria any day.

The Beatrice in the human world is aware that this is the 3rd game? And looks like Kinzo knows too?
It's such a pain to think about this kind of stuff

Ronove? It's another one of those magical beings, how many of them are yet to appear in the game, don't tell be there's a whole page of them in the character screen

They went straight from the human world to Purgatory. This whole two worlds thing is just a mess.

It's so weird having them chat like old friends when they should be enemies, not to mention how Battler gets killed repeatedly.

I laughed at this. You know what, this will be what I call them from now on. It's easier than remembering their names or 'Seven Sisters of Purgatory'.

Beatrice's power gets stronger across each game and could summon more and more minions: the ass nee-chans and the goats in ep2, and then the demon butler in ep3. This looks like a linear timeline and brings up the question of how much power she really had in ep1, was she able to even summon anything and kill anyone at all? We never see her throughout ep1 and she only appeared in person at the end, so I think there's still a real possibility that the ep1 killings were done by a human at the very least.

So going back that logic, Kinzo started the whole process, with another human killing a bunch of people and reviving Beatrice. Battler's refusal to submit caused the rest of the games in which Beatrice is powerful enough to kill on her own.

Getting back to the story, the adults are taking the letter from Beatrice more seriously because of how Young Eva, whatever she is, pushed for Eva to think this is a chance for her to succeed Kinzo. She should be the reason for the deviation from Ep1. Perhaps this is another move from Beatrice?

They all suspect the existence of a mistress called Beatrice, but I don't remember them mentioning it even once in Ep 1 and 2, not even when Beatrice appeared in person.

Now I don't buy the mistress theory at all but imagine a life where you are stuck in a hidden mansion seeing no one but Kinzo.
