I promised to start this once my classes this semester were over, but you know what? I lied. I'm gonna start it three days before my classes are over.
I have ranked the songs with the aid of a very complex method: I gave them all scores between 1-100 based on how much I liked them. There will be short-to-medium length write-ups. I tried to put at least one thing I liked and disliked about each song, but some of them were either so bad or so bland that I gave up on that part. 73. Death Marches
Game: Killing Floor 2 Score: 5/100 Nominator: Snake5555555555 Things I Liked: 1:29-1:32 Things I Disliked: Everything else This was nominated as a joke, right? Theres the barest attempt at some kind of melody with the death metal guitar and the beating of metal in the background, but otherwise its just noise. Its really ear-grating, too. I dont know what else I can even say about it because 95% of it is just the first twenty seconds repeated. In fact, its really pushing things to list 1:29-1:32 as a positive, so lets more accurately describe it as less of a negative than the rest of the song. Even the end chord of the song where the guitar fades out is kind of unpleasant. Ive never played Killing Floor 2 and I know nothing about the series. I can maybe imagine this song finding some kind of value in like a battle situation? Assuming the game is very violent and grimy and gross. Overall, I thoroughly disliked this song. --- Not changing this sig until I decide to change this sig. Started: July 6, 2005 ... Copied to Clipboard!

72. Konran Shoujo Soflan-chan
Game: SOUND VORTEX III: GRAVITY WARS Score: 18/100 Nominator: Flamander Things I Liked: Nothing Things I Disliked: Everything, honestly, sorry In my initial notes after listening to this song the first time, all I wrote was the first 53 seconds border on ear rape. I stand by that, I guess. Whether its the ultra-high-pitched Japanese woman screaming into the microphone, just the terrible singing in general, or the chorus of little girls screaming NYA NYA NYA, I find this song to be completely offensive. Not to mention the piano in the background, the main girl screaming in distress then launching into a pleasant jingle, theif I listed everything in the song I hated, I would just be listing everything in the song. Weeaboo music isnt really my genre in general, so Im clearly not the target audience for this. --- Not changing this sig until I decide to change this sig. Started: July 6, 2005 ... 71. Click Anywhere
Game: The Museum of Anything Goes Score: 19/100 Nominator: MoonRunes Things I Liked: The little one-second tune at 0:06 Things I Disliked: The fact that its just repeated forever I can imagine the little one-second tune starting at 0:06 could be a good part of a larger melody if performed in a completely different way, with completely different instruments. As it is? Nope! This is abject garbage, and worse, its like 8 total seconds of abject garbage just copy-pasted. This song vaguely reminds me of the Annoying Dog tune in Undertale, except thats charming and fun and not over a minute long. I have no idea what this game involves. 70. Deep and Hard
Game: Call of Duty 4 Score: 19/100 Nominator: Snake5555555555 Things I Liked: The underlying background string tune Things I Disliked: Rhyming success with success at 2:08 I dont like rap. For rap to appeal to me, it needs to be like the absolute best of the best, top tier rap. Everything in this song is sort of designed to be unpleasant, which I understand is the point, but thats my style. Unlike the other super low songs, I can see someone really liking this song, if they enjoyed rap, slow-paced unpleasantness, and clips of CoD guys talking about where to drop airstrikes or something. But thats not me! My only CoD experience is playing like four minutes of multiplayer when I was like 22. --- Not changing this sig until I decide to change this sig. Started: July 6, 2005 ... 69. Overflowing Emotions
Game: Vib-Ribbon Score: 24/100 Nominator: Raetsel_Lapin Things I Liked: The opening 10 seconds Things I Disliked: The vocals The grand tragedy of this is that I see a good song underneath. When I opened up the YouTube video, for the first ten seconds I thought Id misranked this one. Then the woman starts singing and Im like oh. Everything about her voice makes me hate her, from the tone to the lyrics (Ya nat ma babeh, Ahm naht ya mammy, do you know cant you see?), and especially at 1:11-1:21, which just made me want to kill myself. I understand that some people like quirky Japanese stuff, which is why like Katamari Damacy is so popular, but that is certainly not me. If the entire song had just been a melody building off of the first 10 seconds with no vocals, this probably could have been around a 45-50. --- Not changing this sig until I decide to change this sig. 68. I luv Hamburgers
Game: Bust a Groove Score: 29/100 Nominator: Raestel_Lapin Things I Liked: Nothing, really Things I Disliked: The singer I didnt plan for two of Raetsels noms to go down in a row, but here we are. I guess his taste in music is just almost exactly the opposite of mine. It has almost the same problem as the previous song, too, even though theyre different genres. This is a perfectly fine melody, but the guy singing about having a double chin as he sloppily eats hamburgers ruins everything. It gets especially bad at 0:57 when the guy chants VEDY VEDY VEDY VEDY GOOD. At 1:32, he gets into an argument with a woman, and again, its just garbage. Then he launches back into the specifics of what he likes in a hamburger. I also dislike basically pausing in the middle of a song to do normal speech in general (that applies beyond VGM), which happens constantly here, especially at 2:24. This is just another song that sacrifices being good for being wacky, and I say this as someone who loves a good hamburger. --- Not changing this sig until I decide to change this sig. Though yeah, I can't say I was expecting any of the three songs to do well. Overflowing Emotions is a song that I was obsessed with from day one of this year's VGMC noms where someone's nomination reminded me to listen to Vib-Ribbon's soundtrack again. I really didn't care for that game's original songs when I first heard them, but I've developed more of an interest in abnormal songs as of late. This song's constant shifting of time, fast-forwarding and slowing down almost at random, really appeals to me and I've listened to it quite a bit. Discovering this song was definitely one of the contest's high-points for me--though this particular track wasn't even nominated and I like "Class::EXSPHERE_NOSURGE;" even more, but whatever. As much as I enjoy it though, I think everything about it is just a bit too much for...probably anyone on the board? There's a slight chance that the odd shifting times might keep Mycro from completely hating it, but even that feels like a longshot. Hamburgers was a joke nom. It makes me laugh and I've voluntarily listened to it more times than I'd care to admit, but I don't think I'd call myself a fan? More like a 5.5/10... kinda amusing for a cheap laugh, but not much more. --- "Surely you're not cogitating triumph. Don't question doubt, and no donuts. " ... Copied to Clipboard!

Game: Beatmania IIDX 25 Cannon Ballers Score: 29/100 Nominator: Mac Arrowny Things I Liked: The opening vocals Things I Disliked: The airhorns, the dubstep chorus This isnt exactly unlistenable to, but its just so damn busy. The vocals are ear-grating, there are random airhorns for some reason, theres a microwave timer, theres a woman singing about chemical cookies. I also hate dubstep, and a lot of this song reminds me of it. And then you have the OOH OOH AH parts. I have no idea what this game involves. 66. SHAKE YA BODY
Game: Lumines Score: 30/100 Nominator: tazzyboyishere Things I Liked: Synthy background noise Things I Disliked: Drums, voice, lyrics, 1:14 Ive heard worse, but this is still a bad song to me. It has elements I like, like the synthy background noise, but the drums are misused, the singing is dumb, and the lengthy repetitive noise at 1:14 is terrible. At 2:16, a woman starts singing whos actually pretty good, but its ruined by someone blowing a whistle into the microphone every few seconds. You could have used some of these elements to create something good, but as it is? Shake ya body down to the bottom of the list. --- Not changing this sig until I decide to change this sig. Game: Silent Hill 3 Score: 31/100 Nominator: Raetsel_Lupin Things I Liked: 0:20-0:23 Things I Disliked: The woman who talks from 1:25-on I really dislike the woman talking about evil stuff in the background for the latter half of the song, but Im not crazy about the first half anyway. That said, I can totally imagine how this could set a spooky tone for a horror game. The problem is my personal taste in horror: I like dumb silly nonsense. Give me a good bad 80s horror movie any day. The best part of the IT remake to me is when the kids see doors labeled Scary, Very Scary, and Not Very Scary, and choose the last one. As a result, I just dont enjoy horror thats trying to be serious. And please note how I say the woman who talks, not the woman who sings, because those arent lyrics, theyre words being calmly said. Game: Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure Score: 38/100 Nominator: FL81 Things I Liked: The general concept Things I Disliked: The vocals are often stretched, particularly in 1:30-1:50 I feel bad for ranking this so low. I like the concept of a musical game, I like the idea of this girl going on an adventure to find love, I like most of the lyrics, but the singing is so bad. This is high school music club-level singing at best. I feel like its maybe two steps above what I could do, and it drags everything down. Whats interesting is that the actresses get the voices right (stern fairy, lovestruck silly girl), and yet are just so bad at singing, which in a game named A Musical Adventure sounds like a pretty big deal. There was a major lack of Castlevania music in the nom topic, which was sad, but at least we got this. It has Castlevanias gothic feeling for the first 50 or so seconds, then it mixes it up with sounds that are a little too jaunty and whimsical. Around 2:15, theres briefly a drum? I like pianos well enough, but trumpets and saxophones, no thanks. Im not a jazz guy, which is something Ive gotten criticized for in real life by people I know. I can see how you would implement this song in a game about a criminal running around in a city, but I would never listen to this casually. At about 2:25, the saxophone starts making horrible noise, and Im just out of there. Except I wasnt because I listened to the entirety of every song, but you get what I mean. Jazz just doesnt work at all for me. By the way, can we discuss jazz for a moment? A ton of people nominated modern city songs, and every single one of them involves light jazz. I never thought about it before, but this is a theme Ive heard in other games not nominated. Is jazz the official video game city music? But then little high-pitched voices start beeping along and ruin the part of the song I like. Dont get me wrong, I understand how they work into each other, but I just dont like those beeping little voices.
