Is there no way to end a run and cash your stuff early? I have done 7 runs and lost everything in the second area every time. I'm making basically no progress whatsoever.

After every area you get to a rest zone that allows you to spend all the cells you gathered.

Minor early spoilers: There is also The Major Forge or something like that you can only use after bosses, but don't worry about that until you can reliably beat a boss on most runs.

Otherwise what they said.

I've been spending there, but I get barely anything in the first area compared to the second, and everything in the second keeps getting lost.

Should I just be intentionally dying in the second area right away until I get strong enough to take the second? Because I feel like I'm mostly wasting time in those areas because I always lose everything.

Do you mean you keep dying in the Promenade of the Condemned? Honestly no shade but part of it is that you just have to get better, I think by 7 runs in I had completed the Promenade a few times. Is it the boss you keep dying on or randos?

I've never seen the boss. I did beat the miniboss to unlock ticking. Maybe I'm just not good, I've mostly died on spikes from randomly spike covered platforms they want me to jump my way through.

The progress system in that game is strictly new items right? Not trying to sound rude but there aren't any new items that are going to help you beat the 2nd area if you're dying to spike traps.

The game does get easier but it takes some time. I remember dying a lot in the beginning too but you'll get the timing down for rolls and jumps eventually.

I feel like the jumping is not great.

Should I be using the D-pad instead?

Bear in mind that you can also dodge roll while in the air. Helps a little bit with the platforming sometimes. Also very useful for dodging some of those awkwardly positioned spike ball traps since you can just go right through them. They designed the jumping to be pretty forgiving actually because platforming is only a minor part of Dead Cells. Combat is the meat of the game.

Hey I beat area 2. Just had a good run.

My big thing with the spikes is that they hurt you when you walk into them from the side, going against all my video game knowledge.

I'd say that's the standard, I can only think of a handful of games (all of them post-Spelunky) that have allowed you to walk through spikes from the side

I can't think of a lot of games where walking into the sides of spikes is ok. That exists but doesn't feel like the norm

I don't think I've ever played a game before DC where the sides of spikes hurt. Probably just because I don't have a ton of retro game experience.

I mean...that's inherently what the visual implies, poles pointing straight up. Why would the sides hurt? If the spikes hurt from the side, it should be a more jagged look, not a clean straight up and down style spike.

I just always assume spikes are gonna hurt in games, I'd rather assume and then find out it's not the case rather than think they won't and then get fucked by them

The loop is git gud.

There are very few ways to spend money and make it easier in the grand scheme of things

Money has barely seemed to matter, it's losing the cells that hurts.

if you are having trouble early on you can just rush through the first level and get the 20 cells behind the speedrun door, spend them and reset

that should easily get you a few levels of potions

Oh I beat the game.

Whoops.

Yet you've only just begun.

I'm actually at the stage you're at right now. Dead Cells with 1 boss cell is significantly more challenging than with zero. The jump in difficulty is pretty unexpected actually. I've reached Hand of the King twice so far in 1BC and got wrecked both times.

Still enjoying the game even though I only ever play it on and off now.
