9 is the better game, and youll probably like it more. That being said I wonder if itll spoil 7 if you play 9 first.

90% of the appeal of FFIX is the nostalgia throwbacks to earlier games. If it's the first FF game you play, you're not going to get as much out of it as all the other people who constantly fellate it.

Of those two, IX is the better game for sure, but you might not get much out of it if you're not already familiar with FF. So of those two play VII first.

But, I would recommend to play 1,4,5 and 6 some time. 2 is bad, 3 is decent, but it can be brutally difficult at times. Skip 8. There are people that like 8. Those people are crazy.

9 is painfully slow... every single battle is at least 40 seconds of dead load time.

But then again, the whole game has a very calm pace to it... even the villains aren't particularly swift in their actions (but certainly make up for it with impact)

edit: actually, that's probably what they were going for - even the overworld theme has a very calm sleepytime feel to it, like it's trying to capture a feeling of being all wrapped up in front of a fire drinking cocoa

Yeah IX has like a storybook feel to it. The settings are kind of whimsical, there's anthropomorphic animals, the characters have exaggerated features. It's like a bedtime story in video game form.

I dunno, I hadnt played much of the earlier games before the first time I played 9 and I still loved it. Its a much lighter game with much more enjoyable characters.

Both games are classics though so it doesnt really matter what you choose

I enjoyed 9 more, but mainly because it was a throwback to classic Final Fantasy games.

I went with FF7.

Yikes, I just died at the first mini boss. This should be a fun evening.

I'm guessing Barrett told you to attack the Guard Scorpion when its tail was up, and then right after, it countered with its laser, and you got decimated.

I remember I attacked it with its tail up before Barrett told me not too. Too late much buddy eh. Even if you get hit by the laser, it shouldn't be an instant party wipe.

The point of Barrett saying that was that if you attack while its tail is up, it's going to counterattack with its laser. His full line was, "Attack while its tail is up! It's going to counter-attack with its laser!", which was inconveniently split into two separate text boxes.

I don't think 7 is a hard game by any means though. Not so sure why you are having difficulty. The only thing hard are the two superbosses. Everything else was really easy.

mmmm, idk, 7 does have a certain appeal... it's paced very well. 8 is, ummmm, I like it, but it's objectively poor. Luckily, the best of the game is the first disc so you can just play some of that and be good... although it has one of the better final dungeons in the series.

9, I've said my piece. I can appreciate the artistry, but I'm a game-play player first and the battles ruin the experience for me

10 is a marvel of game design for the era, the pacing is spot on.

11 I liked, past tense. The story is solid, one of the deepest - if not THE deepest Squareenix has ever done (tldr on if FF14 can exceed it)

12 I like, a lot. It's like the anti-9. It has all the gameplay I want, but none of that FF soul

If you liked CC, you'll probably prefer IX. That, and we have a fair bit in common and IX is among my top 3 FF games, so, yeah. *g*

Edit: Meh, see you went for VII anyway. Btw, when you ask a question with those options on a forum like this, you're almost certainly going to drag the people who think VII is way the best in the series out of the woodwork, so as a poll it was probably a given, but personally... VII was the first FF I ever played, but I was lucky VIII came out shortly after that & my sister's ex lent it to us, because I really disliked VII first time round. I don't think I would have bothered finishing it if I hadn't completed VIII beforehand.

I love the music, and some of the characters, but VII is still among my least favourite of the series despite the computer club guys at school nicknaming me Tifa (yes, probably for all the reasons you think: leggy, busty brown-eyed brunette who used to hit people a lot), and partly because of the freakishly obsessive fans who used to compare every JRPG in the universe to VII & continually find them lacking bc they couldn't stop tugging one off over VII. It isn't as bad nowadays, but from about 1997 to 2003 that got pretty awful.

My 3 favourites are V, IX and XII, in no particular order (I have yet to complete Lightning Returns, but I'll get to it. I think XIII-2 may end up as #3 or #4, mostly because I love time travel).

Perhaps surviving through FF7 first will grow my appreciation for FF9 once I get to it.

I believe certain characters are easier to date due to them having a higher base affection value, from what I remember from the date mechanics FAQ.

Really? Because I despise 10, because to me it feels so poorly paced.

But, I will agree that I think 12 is good. Okay, the story and characters? Not great. But I really like the battle system, and I love how huge the world is. There are entire zones and regions of the world you never have to go to to beat the game, but they're there if you're the exploration-oriented type.

yes, but it only affects two things.

one is a date, and if you're going for achievements, then you're gonna need to follow a guide.

the other is towards the end of the game and involves like two lines of dialogue with tifa.

Before I knew the voting was done I voted VII, even though IX is my favorite FF.

Also, everyone rags on FFIX for having long battle load times but I've been playing FFVII on ps4 the last two days and the animations in battle without X3 speed on are painfully slow.

I basically just play the game in X3 mode unless it's a boss fight now.
