Lack of merch on every corner =/= lack of cultural impact. Avatar's push for 3d, cinema screen/projector innovation, groundbreaking cgi, motion capture, etc. directly affected out culture in many ways. There are plenty of blockbuster movies with no cultural impact whatsoever, but Avatar is not one of them.

The only thing special about it is the push for 3D. Pretty much any half-competent movie pushed by a famed director could have achieved it. It's nothing like Star Wars where the lore is what has captured fans for decades. Without the 3D, it's just a decent popcorn flick. I doubt 70% of the people who saw it when it came out could name the characters or actors.

The argument isn't that it needs to leave an impact.
It's that, for one of the largest movies ever, it's strange no one ever talks about it. And the technology and shit was mostly Lucas's ILM, which has always been at the forefront of movie magic and has a monopoly. 3D also didn't take off like it was supposed to and kind of fell off 2-3 years after Avatar. The real way to look at it is that most people will talk about how amazing the 3D was for the time, basically the experience of the full revival of 3D. Few people will talk about the movie itself. I doubt Avatar 2 will reach even half the box office unless it's also revolutionary in some aspect.

Id wager if avatar did release sequels straight after the first one, people will keep talking about it That's the point. Cameron didn't take advantage of that, so it fell off the radar fast. Resurrecting it 12 years later is not gonna do much. Also, ok, so the second best in the industry, Peter Jackson's Weta, did the work. So Lucas and Jackson were more crucial to the only thing that stood out, the technological aspects, than anything Cameron did. More like just evolving with the times and staying ahead like they always have. --- "Fear cuts deeper than swords." ... Copied to Clipboard!

Its an odd situation for avatar, its a modern movie, but it will be over 10 years for the sequel to come out Eh, JP is a totally different story. The first one was a huge hit and did leave tons of impact. I mean, just recently, Ted 2 has a whole scene about finding weed and the JP theme playing in the background. That theme alone is iconic. JW was the 4th movie and penned as a revitalization of the franchise much like TFA and TLJ. And even the PT can be likened to that. It made insane money during its time. But the entire thing itself was pretty garbage. Avatar couldn't even make it to number 2. Perhaps some gimmick might aid it, but I'm doubting it. --- "Fear cuts deeper than swords." ...
