It's clearly not English, so it clearly shouldn't follow English rules. You don't just apply English pronunciation to every single name you come across.

Agreed. Also, if you have continual issues pronouncing a name or word the right way despite knowing how it's supposed to be pronounced you need to expand your horizons and / or stop being narrow minded jackass.

Yup. Tons of people don't know how to pronounce certain words like Mt. Everest, kamikaze, or karaoke. But it's still acceptable to say Mt. Ev-rest, ka-muh-ka-zee, and carry-oh-key. As long as someone isn't being a total language snob, they'll probably know what you mean.

I have. Even if someone with a accent tries to pronounce something as it should be but comes out wrong because of the accent, it's better than purposely mispronouncing it.

there's slightly mispronouncing something due to it being in a foreign language, and then there's outright saying something incorrectly

if you know how it's supposed to sound, then you can make the effort

it doesn't have to sound perfect

That sound doesn't exist in English. You have people on here arguing over two incorrect pronunciations. Whether they say rye or ree it isn't correct. It's like Kyu (q) in that the y sound is merged into the same sylable as the other consonent. There is no vowel in between the onset and the u sound. Without practice English speakers cannot make that sound because it doesn't exist in their language. It's different than the tsu sound which does exist, but isn't present at the start of words in English. The Ryu sound is simply not present (neither is Ryo or Kyo).

But again it isn't really worth worrying about because you shouldn't be expected to pronounce foreign names correctly in your native language.

dude, please, stfu

i remember you posting nonsense in a topic i made about how "sekiro" is pronounced too

you're clearly hella language-incompetent

-

for one, native english speakers can make the sound, i.e. it is very phonetically pronounceable in english

second, nobody is expecting people to be able to pronounce it 100% authentically, but if you're a native english speaker, then just saying 'ryoo' (which, as i already mentioned, is totally within your means) is 95% of the way there

I didn't say they couldn't make it. I said they would need to practice. Just like Japanese people need to practice sounds not present in their language to learn English. And no that sound isn't present in English. Give me a single English word with the "Ryu" sound in it. People wouldn't struggle to say a sound if it was present in their language. That should be obvious. Feel free to continue throwing a temper tantrum in your reply though.

just cause it isn't in any common words in the language doesn't mean it isn't easily pronounceable (even without practice)

there aren't any words i can think of in english with the spanish , yet i can still somehow get my mouth, lips, and tongue to mystically and magically coordinate themselves and say "jalapeo" correctly, for instance

I don't have any problems pronouncing English or Japanese. I don't know why you are attacking me specifically because I don't think there is anything wrong with people having trouble pronouncing another language. It's obviously common as this topic shows. I have to wonder if you can even pronounce it correctly since you are so oddly defensive about that whole thing.

Yeah. Japanese is pretty easy to pronounce because for the most part, everything is pronounced one way. Like "A" is always pronounced "ah", unlike in English, where it could be pronounced "ay", "uh", "aa" (like apple) or "ah". I mean the word Australia has three of those different pronunciations for the letter A lol

uh, cause your posts itt have been stupid and you act like an authority cause, what, you're a foreigner living in japan or something?

-

what's your name? like david or michael or whatever?

there is legitimately no short i or 'kul' sound in japanese, so yeah, it'd be hard for your japanese coworkers to pronounce either of those names

in contrast, native english speakers are perfectly capable of rolling an r into a y and then ending it with an 'oo' sound (because, as i said, it exists in their phonetic repertoire)

-

also, for the record, the original topic doesn't even bother me that much

it's just you spewing bs that does

Multiple people in this topic have trouble saying the word. I have also met many English speakers in real life that cannot say it (including famous fighting game players). And you are acting like they should all feel bad or whatever because it's actually super easy to pronounce despite it not being in their language. It's not easy to pronounce for English speakers. No Japanese teachers think that. They spend time having students practice that pronunciation because it is hard. I used to tutor people learning Japanese and it was a difficult sound for many of them to learn. You think very highly of yourself and think anyone that can't pronounce these things sucks at language. That's not how language works. If sounds aren't present in your native language you struggle to pronounce them without practice. That's basic science. The majority of English speakers cannot pronounce Ryu without practice or exposure to a language with the sound in it.

where? can you cite even a single person saying that they have trouble rolling an r into a y?

or if you're referring to people saying rye-you, then they're doing so due to ignorance of the name's actual pronunciation or habit, not cause of any actual linguistic difficulties on their parts

I have also met many English speakers in real life that cannot say it (including famous fighting game players).

who

the

fuck

cares

like with bringing up having japanese coworkers, this is irrelevant

And you are acting like they should all feel bad or whatever because it's actually super easy to pronounce despite it not being in their language.

it actually is easy, but where am i acting like they should feel bad?

i mean, i'm trying to make you feel bad for making stupid/bullshit points, but not others

It's not easy to pronounce for English speakers. No Japanese teachers think that. They spend time having students practice that pronunciation because it is hard. I used to tutor people learning Japanese and it was a difficult sound for many of them to learn.

a super, 100% authentic japanese r can be hard to accurately, 100% replicate and pronounce like a native

rolling an r into a y isn't

(and again - bringing up how you used to tutor = irrelevant)

You think very highly of yourself and think anyone that can't pronounce these things sucks at language. That's not how language works. If sounds aren't present in your native language you struggle to pronounce them without practice. That's basic science. The majority of English speakers cannot pronounce Ryu without practice or exposure to a language with the sound in it.

what part of "phonetically possible" do you not get

again, like with my spanish example, it doesn't exist in english

yet, as a non-spanish speaker, i can somehow... replicate the sound?!
