I dont want to live forever

So they could choose for themselves

I'll take the immortality. Even if my girlfriend says she wants it, I think she would regret it.

But I want it.

This makes all the difference in the world, really. Without the inevitable anguish of being stuck floating in space for an eternity, immortality is pretty sweet.

I picked myself because I wouldn't want to wish that fate on the person I love the most. I'll just have to suffer the Earth or life forever.

Me because that's a fate much worse than death and it'd be whack to force that on anyone.

If you're immortal enough, you get to eventually watch protons decay.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proton_decay
If it does decay via a positron, the proton's half-life is constrained to be at least 1.6710^34 years.

He said youre only immune to sickness or injury to a point. Id take that to mean you wouldnt survive grievous physical damage, like being in close proximity to a strong explosion, a 50 cal bullet to the head, or similar injuries. Basically, you almost certainly wouldnt end up trapped in a terrible immortal situation with no possible way out.
