I've been living with him for two months and basically, his house is our house etc and we all (me, him and my bro) take care of the dog as a result. Occasionally when you let her out back to use the bathroom she will make a bolt for the opening in the corner of the fence and will go off to who knows where. Typically she will come back on her own a few hours later or a neighbor will bring her back, but it's starting to even get on my nerves (my roommate gets pissed at her every time she does it); she could get ran over by a car that may not see her or something one day, for example. I let her outside tonight and go back to check on her five minutes later and she's gone, and it's midnight.

I haven't had a dog in decades so I'm not exactly sure what qualifies as "good" or "bad" punishments for them.

Have you ever considered...I dunno...blocking the hole in the fence?

I know it sounds crazy, but you never know. It just might work.

Guys, I'm still getting on my feet and can barely afford food, much less parts to cover a wide gap in a fence. My roommate really should wire it up or something in the meantime but he's cheap and a bit lazy =/

She adores me and my bro. My roommate tells me she learned the bad habit of fleeing from the other dog he used to have.

No. Dogs do not "learn to flee" and it is not a "bad habit" that you can punish/fix.

Animals naturally like to check things out, find mates of they aren't spayed etc.

You simply gotta block the fence with something. Tie some old shirts to cover the hole, put literally anything there so she can't just waltz out when left unsupervised.
