In the new movie, Godzilla has ~~4 different fights and several scenes where he is not fighting~~ so this "reviewer" can fuck off. The movie has legit criticism but not this Plenty of kaiju action for people wanting that. Human characters and plot are lacking but no one sees Godzilla for the human characters. This movie does not deserve that low of a score. I'd give it maybe a 6 or 7. The director himself admitted that he would watch Godzilla movies when he was younger just to laugh at them. He never had any respect for the franchise. If you can pull off a cool human story, go for it. The fact is its very hard creating new human characters with no established history for audiences to care about within two hours. It completely ignored the established lore of the past films but also failed at creating its own. The absence of Godzilla is hardly noticeable because of the other monsters on screen and the interesting story woven into the film. If you look at the original Alien, the creature has less than 4 minutes of screentime in total. It's not the time you spend on screen. It's what you do with that time. Now, Godzilla '14 was no Jaws. Godzilla abruptly disappears and that wreaks of sloppy editing. But it wasn't enough to ruin the film for me. While I have little faith in the human element of this film, I trust the monster fight will deliver. Leonard Maltin gave Godzilla 1985 a half-star out of four and that's quite possibly the best Godzilla movie aside from the original. Godzilla's never been a friend of critics.
