My biggest thing from my early games like that that sticks in my mind was not hammering fett as Gordon Freeman to make sure he never wins

Randomness has no place in mafia and mafiauniverse is like infatuated with randomness. Idk why.

Can't imagine collecting players from across the internet to compete in that.

The set up linked above is basically all randomness. Tied lynched resulting in a random choice. Etc. Hell, it is also basically impossible to be balanced because the setup itself is randomed.

Mafiauniverse also seemed to like having some games with random day shots. Random mini games. Etc.

I mean, if that's what they like then so be it, but there is a lot of games that incorporate randomness into their games.

It doesn't mean every single game they have has randomness.

I can't see collecting a bunch of people from websites for the format that scare's group is in. Personally.

But a lot of mafia communities play setups with this amount of roles.

They've done 5 seasons in a row where the town either had no roles, one role, or at most 2-3 roles and a dozen vanillas.

So to accommodate a large amount of the 175 participating communities, they chose a setup full of roles this year.

MU hosting games full of day shots and mini games has absolutely nothing to do with this event.

mafia champs does different setups every year because people like different setups and a lot of different communities play mafia differently

as for the lynch thing, it's pretty common

not every game on MU is a mash etc

This setup was created by a group of people with years of hosting and balancing experience, theorycrafted extensively to plan for all possible outcomes, and then tested out multiple times. I trust that committee more than I trust someone glancing at it and making a snap judgment. Anecdotally, none of the games so far have resulted in anyone feeling the better team didn't win or that the distribution of roles made things unfair.

I can't talk about the setup strategy publicly while games are ongoing (or at least I don't think I should), but I think it's fine and absolutely not my thing because I hate roles

but it's something different and it's been fun

this is an ideal role setup for champs because it spreads power to everyone instead of randomly giving all of it to some people who get to benefit unfairly from it

it's either that or limited roles in general and people seem to not prefer that

I mean fuck, this is way less random than literally every setup I've ever played here on this site.

Well, the biggest swing I can see is in regards to the vig's. Tho there could be a lot of setups where scum is screwed and with 4/17 scum at like only 22% scum they are already hugely at a disadvantage. Town should roll scum most these games.

It's a culture shock thing. Throw together 17 strangers from different communities with wildly different metas and the townies just lynch each other like clockwork.

Mafia has won all but one game so far, a few of them total sweeps.

Even though, yes, many people agreed that the setup was likely town favored. But they also knew that for this event its okay to favor town because town is at a massive disadvantage.

Much debate has been had on the issue but I think most people fall on the latter

the role setup has some balance issues I think but it's mostly because of the way people are playing it I think, I don't want to go into further detail because that skirts the rule about talking about ongoing games

Sure.

I once had drinks with someone who played full ring poker. We ended up connecting on this topic of like, when I win, is it because I'm amazing or because my opponents were all idiots? And it can be a tough question to answer empirically.

Pretty fascinating stuff.

It's definitely culture clash. People just lynch each other for behaving differently than they'd expect, without consideration for if its actually scummy. In addition to just the usual lynching of people who don't post as much.

In none of the games so far has anyone been able to look at it and say "this town could've won but the setup just wasn't balanced", it's mostly just "yeah that town clearly had no clue who any of the scum were and were never gonna solve it"

I'm generalizing because there's more nuance than that, but that's the gist of it
