Welcome to my latest board project, Snake Ranks Movie, TV and Video Game Scenes (rolls right off the tongue doesn't it)! You, the esteemed members of Board 8, nominated 85 total scenes for me to view, discern, and rank as I see fit. There was no points system or any concrete rules to measure quality here; these are just my unfiltered, totally subjective opinions and the scenes were placed simply as I saw fit. This will be a more casual, off-the-cuff ranking than I usually do, but I still hope you follow along and enjoy this assortment of musical numbers, long takes, action scenes, and more Tarantino than you can shake a stick at.

I pretty much knew this would be the last place spot just from the thumbnail alone. Anyone will tell you that from first glance that these graphics are god damn hideous, especially the character models. The backgrounds might trick you into thinking they are nice at first, until you realize how empty, lifeless and tacky everything is, with the ugliest shade of red I've ever seen definitely not helping things along. After getting one of the most hideous close-ups in existence, this John Constantine looking motherfucker "barges" in and delivers one of the most hilariously awkward slaps ever before we get more close-ups, non-stop barrage style, that make it so hard to take anything in the scene seriously. Both Brent and the woman look like they're having diarrhea attacks. If that wasn't enough, the voice acting here makes the original Resident Evil seem competently performed!

I could see the argument for this being "so bad it's good", but honestly I wasn't really getting that here personally. It's just a pure pile of crap in my eyes!

This scene encapsulates a style of humor that doesn't really appeal to me anymore. It's too blunt and too obvious, and frankly bland that lacks any sort of wit or cleverness. At its pure essence, it's merely a slapstick scenario without any real craft or clever set-up/payoffs that make that type of comedy typically so enjoyable. It's one man getting beat up over and over again and the animation is way too weak to carry any sort of weight or damage progression for something like this. I have also never really liked that cliche operatic vocal accompaniment trope. I can't really explain it, it just feels stupid. It's not that I really expected more from this scene considering the source material, but just a little more craft and care goes a long way.

Nominated by: Murphiroth (3/4 remaining)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UO3-DV6bs_k" data-time="

In a universe where I cared more about this show, perhaps this scene becomes a little more impactful for me. However, based on what little I've watched, the context provided, and how much I don't care about ether character in season 1, this scene comes off just about as dry as a man dropped off in the middle of the Sahara Desert with an empty water bottle in hand. The editing is frankly choppy and doesn't really illustrate the scene very well, and I sense zero chemistry between the two despite them supposedly being former lovers and Ward betraying Skye. Chloe needs way more anger in her "Never turn your back on the enemy" line, and also wow, what a generic and impersonal thing to teach someone. There's also something really goofy about Ward's facial expression after being shot. This is a scene of mismatched pieces that have the potential for something greater, but it just keeps fumbling at every possible opportunity.

This is very similar to the Agents of SHILED scene, not in that it's really bad or anything, but the full emotional impact of knowing these characters for a long time is quite lost on someone who has never seen the series. In fact, I would say the acting is particularly good here and sells Seven and One's relationship quite well in just a few words and glances. I like the make-up and effects used too. The camera work is perhaps a little flat but there's not much you can do with a scene like this anyway. If I knew the show better, this maybe would've ranked a little higher, but alas, without knowing the full consequences of this scene, it's ultimately something that I just watch and then forget about it shortly after.

81. Conversation with Sovereign
Origin: Mass Effect (2007)
Nominated by: Anagram (3/4 remaining)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvrIFIjTGt0" data-time="

So, here's a scene I was super conflicted with. In the full context of the game, this scene is a huge plot twist that changes everything you know about Saren, his ship, and the Reapers' role in everything. It's a scary revelation to be sure, and Sovereign's intimidating voice and stature makes sure the player is aware of the gravity of the situation. Yet, the direction of this scene is so goddamn boring. The character expressions are about as lively as a department store mannequin, and though the player may buy Sovereign's threat, Shepard and crew look like they'd rather be anywhere else. Everyone stands around stiff as a board while the most intense dialogue ever is rattled off, and it's a tone ruiner. In the moment, as a player, it's something you don't really notice as you focus on making your dialogue choices, but as an outside viewer, the weaknesses unfortunately start to shine through, and makes the scene lose a little of its bite.

80. In Front of My Salad
Origin: Private Lessons 3 (2017)
Nominated by: Raka_Putra (3/4 remaining)
I probably can't show this

The set-up like presumably most films in this "style" is strange and forced, which does contribute a bit more absurdity to the whole situation however. There's a million "why" questions one could ask throughout this short clip and each one leads down a different rabbit hole of nonsensical conclusions. All that's important here is that a woman abandons her salad after seeing what's in front of her, and this is a tragedy of epic proportions. Will the salad ever be eaten again? Or is it cursed to rot on the kitchen counter for all eternity? It's a total shame, and I hope for once, someone will think of the salad's feelings in all of this.

Origin: Devil May Cry 5 (2019)
Nominated by: Murphiroth (2/4 remaining)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44u-8v55fBw" data-time="

I'm not gonna lie, but when this scene came up in Devil May Cry 5, I found it to be really cringe-worthy. I know the DMC series is known for scenes like this, but there's about something the previous scenes of Lucifer or even Nevan that fit their games' stories and tones better. I do like the initial interaction between Dante and Nico however, and the way Dante just says "I'll take this" after the dance routine is over. I know that I probably shouldn't take something like this so seriously but it really just doesn't work for me. Still doesn't change the fact that DMC5 is an excellent game all-around!

While I definitely disagree on the tone and think it fully fits DMC in general in terms of how ridiculous it is, I agree with the initial interaction between Nico and Dante being good! She's such a fangirl and she stutters a bit like her dad did, and even the hat itself is a callback to one of the coolest enemy designs in DMC4.

78. DK Rap

Nominated by: Great_Paul (3/4 remaining)

Yes, it's a fun scene especially for its time, but that's it is really. This list has a lot of quality scenes, and just being fun or cute won't get you very far here. It always bothered me that the first couplet in the first verse doesn't rhyme, and I don't think it's supposed to be some sort of censored pun either. The lyricism in general is very weak but hey this isn't supposed to be some award winning masterpiece either. The character animations are probably my overall favorite part honestly. I especially like the scenes with the Kremlings, especially as the whole thing ends with an hilarious bombing of the DK Crew.

Nominated by: PrinceKaro (3/4 remaining)

Speaking of being simply fun, we have the Winter Wrap Up. Overall, this is a way better actual song than the DK Rap, and a complete earworm even from just one listen. That's commendable. The animation is colorful and vibrant but overall there's just not enough depth to anything here. And there's nothing wrong that. I can see this being a great way to get kids in the mood for spring for example, encouraging spring cleaning and the like. It has a specific purpose, and it fulfills it well, but it doesn't have the quality to match the rest of the list.

Origin: Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
Nominated by: TomNook (2/3 remaining)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5Gz7MeSbF4" data-time="

This scene definitely gets by on its badassness, and it's a great establishing character moment for Yondu. However, it's lacking a certain pizzazz that makes it truly rank in the annals of great Marvel scenes or great scenes in general. The mooks killed are frankly boring visually and more creative designs and damage to their bodies could've really elevated the scene greatly. It's still cool to see Ronan's army fall all at once while a little ship blows up in the background however. I think this scene is one-upped immensely by the arrow scene in GoTG Vol. 2.

Now we enter a portion of the rankings I like to call, the "Mildly Amusing" section. These are scenes which typically elicit a chuckle or other type of emotion, and not really much else. A Trip to the Accountant is a perfect example. I typically don't find "stoner" humor all that funny, but Killian the accountant's flat reactions to the whole situation do make things a bit more fun, and are easily my favorite part. Ilana comes off as more annoying than funny though, and after the first minute things quickly become stale unfortunately. Even Killian becomes overdone with a final scream that really feels unneeded. It's all together not terrible, but I've seen way funnier scenes than this.

Aw, come on, Killian Casey C.P.A.!

I adore that scene, but nobody ever seems to find it as funny as I do.

74. I Found My Father
Origin: Miami Connection (1987)
Nominated by: Mega Mana (1/2 remaining)

This scene is incredibly random and strange, and there are many elements at play here that contribute to this. The dude coming out at the start shirtless and with his pants unbuttoned is one place to start. I really like the way he says "I found my father", it's so squeaky and actually kind of sincere! Then the scene moves to even more strange places as his friends come out shirtless as well, including one guy seemingly wearing just a towel! Do I even want to know what goes on in that house? From here on in I can't really understand a thing anyone is saying but it does put a smile on my face. This scene is fun for its pure randomness and insanity, but I don't die laughing at it or anything. Miami Connection is actually a pretty funny and great film all around, but this scene is really just a small piece of it, albeit one of the most famous pieces.

73. The Great Mighty Poo Song
Origin: Conker's Bad Fur Day (2001)
Nominated by: PrinceKaro (2/4 remaining)

Potty humor definitely falls under the realm of "Mildly Amusing" for me. This whole thing is childish and wildly immature with lyrics like "I'm gonna throw my shit at you" and "ram it up my butt". It absolutely works in the crass nature of the game, but taken out of its realm it becomes rather silly. It's not all bad though, I got a good laugh when the Great Mighty Poo gets metaphorically flushed down the toilet. The design and animation of the Mighty Poo is great too. Potty humor will always have its place I guess, as long as its kept firmly in the porcelain throne.

72. Ash turns into stone, gets revived
Origin: Pokmon: the First Movie (1998)
Nominated by: Raka_Putra (2/4 remaining)

Coupled together with my ongoing "Mildly Amusing" theme is the "Mildly Dramatic" scene. Now, I'm sure plenty of kids bawled their eyes out upon seeing their childhood Pokemon catching hero Ash Ketchum become petrified by the Grey Gargoyle, and there's nothing wrong with that. This doesn't change the fact that it is horrendously corny how a bunch of crying Pokemon bring someone back from the dead. They might as well be sprinkling magic fairy dust over Ash's body. Despite the waterworks, there isn't much tension or gravitas to this thing at all. Pokemon still needs its main protagonist after all. Ash gets revived lickety-split, and I feel nothing.

Ash's type changed to Ground.

Pikachu used Thunderbolt. It doesn't affect Ash.

Pikachu used Waterfall. It's super effective!

Fair enough! I thought the nostalgia would make it a couple spots higher but yeah it is pretty corny.

I actually don't have nostalgia for Pokemon really because I was only 5 when the movie came out here. I've seen the movie fully when I was older but I don't really have any love for it.

71. Patriots Codec conversation, S3 Plan explained
Origin: Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2001)
Nominated by: Place (3/4 remaining)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8sj_XrvrPng" data-time="

This scene is very similar to the Sovereign conversation discussed earlier. This conversation shows a bit of my own personal, subjective bias, because I adore MGS2 and this codec call is actually intense and captivating. Yet, as a scene, it's almost unnervingly flat, to its detriment and and as a disservice to itself. I've never really been a fan of the codec system in the MGS series as far as delivering story reveals and exposition goes. I think MGS3 did it best by relegating codecs to a more supporting and comedic role, with plenty of Easter eggs & optional stuff that's really fun to discover for yourself. Occasionally, as we will see later on in the list, the codec can be used for the occasional cool plot twist, but this Patriots plan story dump isn't it. I love the actual content of what is being discussed here, but there's gotta be a better way of showing it all than two static character portraits over a black screen. The one and only cool flair is Campbell turning into a skull by the end of it. I think show, don't tell could've done wonders here, but it is what it is.
