70. Pierce's Failure Speech
Origin: Community (Beginner Pottery S1E19, 2010)
Nominated by: The Code is Bosco (2/4 remaining)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlvZtXTEMug" data-time="

This scene is "sort of" a lot of things. It's "sort of" funny, it's "sort of" inspirational, It's "sort of" memorable. In a show full of excellent and hilarious moments, Pierce's failure speech here just really gets lost in the shuffle for me. Pierce's optimism just reads like something you could get on the back of a cereal box or in a fortune cookie. The performances are there but there's nothing here that really grabs me all that much. I guess I do like Pierce just rowing away after all is said and done. I wish there was more to say, but yeah, pretty simple scene, that's not too good but not too bad either.

69. Sandworm Attack
Origin: Dune (1984)
Nominated by: Redrocket (2/4 remaining)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1G5jMgx8GVU" data-time="

As we slowly exit the "mildly amusing" phase of the rankings, we will now see scenes that are flawed but maybe have one or two things it particularly excels at. This Dune clip is the perfect example to kick things off. The special effects are particularly on point here, and Lynch commands the scene with a hard tension that slowly and surely ratchets up to extreme levels. The sandworm bursting out from the sand is scary and incredible, and though it does not grace the screen for long, your imagination makes you feel like you've witnessed something massive and epic in scale. What doesn't really work as well is some honestly drywall performances here, and a very cheap looking ship set. It's reminiscent of Star Trek TOS, which I can enjoy at points, but I'm not always in the mood for. Though the tension with camera work and music is done well, the acting actually drags the pace down for me and nearly runs the risk of making this scene kind of dull. It hangs on for the climax however, and that one sandworm scene makes it all worth it.

Nominated by: Johnbobb (3/4 remaining)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myF_JhzwWdY" data-time="

I love Louis C.K., I love Kurt Metzger, I love Steve Buscemi, and yet this scene doesn't work for me as well as the people involved would otherwise suggest. Metzger has a gift for storytelling and he puts everything he has into it to make this classic bible story pop out and become vibrant, but at the end of the day, I just don't find the story itself all that funny, no matter what kind of spin or extra pizazz is put over it. Also, I know the spotlight is meant to be on Kurt, but I do wish Louis and Steve had more to do than just basically smile and listen through the whole thing. Maybe having extraneous dialogue from them would've ruined the flow of the storytelling, but I still think it would've made the scene feel more alive. Edie Falco drawing the line at "that word" was well done though!

It's not the best Horace and Pete clip but I didn't want to get any that would spoil anything or depend on being familiar with the characters to fully appreciate because I'm not sure if you've seen the show

that being said I still love the scene and even though CK and Buscemi dont have much to do I feel like they still add to the environment

67. Skyler White's Happy Birthday to you
Origin: Breaking Bad (Mandala, S2E11, 2009)
Nominated by: Axl_Rose_85
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_GiCz7nPsU" data-time="

A lot of people totally dislike this scene or dismiss it as just "cringe" but I see a lot of good stuff in this scene honestly. Breaking Bad often excelled at using cringe to magnify the more despicable traits of certain characters. There's just something more than a little creepy about your boss practically forcing you into a sultry performance for his own benefit, especially if you know everything about Ted's and Skyler's relationship beforehand. This is also Skyler, a married woman, doing this, and it really feels like a betrayal of that bond. Yeah, the actual performance is pretty bad, but that's not really the full point of the scene. The Sam Raimi-like extras ("You guys, the candles are getting wax all over the place") also feel very out of place for Breaking Bad in general. It's not the greatest scene in the world by any means, but the subtext it provides is very strong and makes the scene deserve a second look.

66. Anton Ego's closing monologue
Origin: Ratatouille (2007)
Nominated by: Place (2/4 remaining)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KU8JYWAzbbM" data-time="

This scene sends a great message out to the world and the voice performance by Peter O'Toole is top notch. The speech itself kind of makes me feel bad for ranking it this low, but beyond the message itself there's nothing here in the actual animation that really catches my eye as it's mainly just a bunch of epilogue wrap-up scenes, showing where characters are and what they're doing after the events of the film. Meaningful dialogue is only one aspect of a scene, and though it may fit the film's message perfectly, in the context of this ranking, this is where dialogue and not much else will make you end up.

65. Heads Will Roll
Origin: Asuras Wrath (2012)
Nominated by: Pirateking2000 (2/4 remaining)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAnGjYQBvdc" data-time="

This scene has a lot of emotion packed into it, but I do have one pretty big problem with it. This is mere personal preference, but I don't think the graphical art style of the game really conveys the emotion as properly as it should. Now this may be a budgetary issue, but Asura's scream doesn't really feel as powerful as it should, and I really blame the weak explosion of the big fleet as the main driving force as to why this doesn't fully work for me. It looks like a stock effect and absolutely nothing like a thousand ships exploding at once. However, the lead up to the scream is still decently effective and Asura himself looks pretty great, especially in his new form. It doesn't really make me feel that much, but hey, I recognize the effort at least.

Origin: Firefly (The Train Job, S1E2, 2002)
Nominated by: Redrocket (1/4 remaining)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPRlHwwVIug" data-time="

A fun little scene to be sure, if a little simple. You kind of expect the punchline, but Crow's tough guy speech and Mal's indifference to the actual kicking still got a hearty laugh out of me! Then, you have the follow-up henchman obviously willing to cooperate. Honestly, I don't really have much to say about this scene, it's fun for what it is, there's nothing really bad about it, but I guess it doesn't stand out enough. Its biggest crime here is playing it too safe!

Nominated by: Murphiroth (1/4 remaining)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NsGP_6N9i0w" data-time="

I kept flip-flopping on this clip like crazy. I am a bit of a sucker for this snappy USA Network style, with its quick pace and witty, hipster narration, invoking nostalgic memories of watching shows like Psych, Monk, Covert Affairs, and Suits. But, I had to reign myself in, and really look at this scene critically. I love Westen's approach to the situation, it's both calculated (showing off Westen's versatile skillset) and clever (showing Westen's unique approach to complicated situations). However, I realized what doesn't work as well for me is the extremely dated "stop-and-go" editing style that makes things feel more choppy than they should. In fact, the whole sequence of Westen breaking through the back wall is shown really weird and makes the placement of certain rooms and characters a little confusing. The drug dealer is a huge over-actor too. Overall, this scene is still one I enjoy, and I think I'll always remember that "duct tape makes you smart".

62. - "I thought you said you were a beekeeper?"
Origin: Toast of London (Addictive Personality, S1E1, 2013)
Nominated by: The Code is Bosco (1/4 remaining)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfDOVYLQsUY" data-time="

Normally, "beak-keeper" would be a horrible cheesy pun and worthy of an eye-roll, but this Toast of London clip really makes it work. Morgana Robinson does a great job of playing this unhinged fling, nonchalantly dismissing troubling things such as a dark, bloody stain on the carpet while casually talking about having stabbed her boyfriend. I love dark comedy, and this really hits my humor center perfectly. Going back to the pun, it really puts the visuals of the beak collection in a new, more terrifyingly weird light. Some things I don't like as much is the flat as hell lighting, camera work, and Matt Berry's performance, which is serviceable but not spectacular (and it's strange, because I usually enjoy his work). Also, some of the jokes like forgetting your trousers don't land for me as much as the black humor stuff. Still, there's a good bit to like here and I'd be remiss to say I didn't enjoy it.

Nominated by: Axl_Rose_85 (2/4 remaining)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihP3fpLtpcM" data-time="

There are two types of Twin Peaks fans. Those who adore this scene, and those who despise it. I lean much towards the former! It's classic Lynchian weirdness, and a hallmark of his work featuring all the way back as far as Eraserhead. I could see why the falsetto vocals grate on a lot of people's ears. The composition of the scene is just as weird, with Donna and Maddy set-up on the floor awkwardly while James looms just above them, bent at the knee. Taken at face value, someone could interpret this scene as pure cringe with a stupid song, but there's so much going on, as a burning love triangle rages silently in the background of the whole affair. I give so much credit to Lara Flynn Boyle and Sheryl Lee here, they absolutely nail the subtle facial expressions needed to make this work as much as it does. Yes, the song itself is artificial and sickeningly sweet, but to just look at it for that alone is to miss the point.

60. Opening
Origin: A Quiet Place (2018)
Nominated by: Metalmindstats (3/4 remaining)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_FdjXqSZlc" data-time="

So, we're coming into scenes that definitely have more good than bad qualities, but are still flawed. Let's take this scene from one of last years' most critically acclaimed horror films. It's obviously well-shot, well-edited, and presents a unique scenario where this family communicates only through sign language, hushed tones, and facial expressions. We're not really quite sure why, but we're able to piece together a post-apocalyptic state due to the lack of people around and the trashed nature of the grocery store. One of the most tense aspects of this scene is Beau's rocket ship, batteries clearly in view, waiting to go off at a moment's notice, good foreshadowing for later. Now, as the scene progresses, things start to become a little more clunky however. There's a really awkward shot of newspaper exposition, loudly exclaiming "It's sound!" as if we already didn't get the hint. Then, I always found it really weird how the parents just leave without making sure their kids don't make any stupid mistakes like taking a noisy rocketship along in a world where you can no longer make sound. There's no way, in a world this dangerous, that any parents would leave their YOUNGEST kid in the back of a single-file line, which makes checking on their well-being much harder. This whole situation could've been so easily avoided. It calls into question who this family has been able to survive as long as they have. It's a shame too, because it puts the beautiful foreshadowing work and excellent cinematography to waste.

59. Senator Armstrong's I Have a Dream Speech
Origin: Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (2013)
Nominated by: greengravy294 (0/4 remaining *ELIMINATED*)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmWQd8zhEg4" data-time="

Though Metal Gear Rising was made with a different tone from its Solid relatives, one thing it did not skimp on was quality cutscenes. As I've grown over the years, the sprawling, lengthy, encyclopedic, wordy cutscenes of the Metal Gear series sort of grate on the nerves after awhile. Metal Gear Rising was a breath of fresh air, giving the world breezy cutscenes that cut to the chase without sacrificing high-quality voice acting, choreography, and even dialog. There's a reason Senator Armstrong has become a beloved, memed villain; there's something so good and perfectly cheesy about this political figure taken out of his natural habitat and positioned as this WWE wrestling champion. It's prophetic and eerily accurate in our modern world. However, it also indulges too heavily in bumper sticker slogans and internet-ready gifs, too self-aware for its own good. It's a scene with pseudo-depth, and though it's enjoyable, ultimately, it leaves a feeling of emptiness.

Origin: Final Fantasy V (1992)
Nominated by: Redrocket (0/4 remaining *ELIMINATED*)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fDKJLQwlis" data-time="

This scene is a pretty great example of how you can tell a compelling just using 16-bit graphics. Despite the goofy looking sprites and having only readable dialogue, the game draws you in with compelling music and fantastic character motivation. It always runs the risk of being too cheesy, like when the four crystals zap the party, but Galuf's ultimate triumph is an uproarious celebration of the human spirit. I also love how gameplay segregates into this, positioning Galuf as invincible in the presence of this great dark knight, pushing the boundaries of the story even more. It ends on a sad moment, but great build-up makes it so Galuf's sacrifice wasn't wasted.

Great simple scene that combines visual comedy with the natural comedic timing of the great cast. Though this scene kind of got too over-exposed for me at a certain point, there's no denying the great craftsmanship and care put into this scene. It's genius, and pretty much writes itself. While I don't think it's necessarily the best joke in a movie full of 'em, I think in particular the voice acting and character reactions are just about pitch-perfect. Nick really shines in this scene especially; I think his joke and the sloth's delayed laugh is so, so good.

I hadn't seen any part of A Quiet Place since watching it in a theater over a year ago. I have to say, some of the logical leaps you mentioned are definitely pretty glaring on a rewatch. I think why the scene (and movie in general) worked so well for me is that its whole gimmick, and generally strong execution thereof, left me focusing on the ride rather than the illogical plot details.

I agree with where you placed the Zootopia scene. It's merely one funny scene in a movie full of them, and while good, it doesn't stand out that much in retrospect.
