Seems incredibly petty

I can maybe see it you're the company who made the game and mistakenly think this is going to affect your bottom line (it isn't because they weren't going to buy the game anyway).

But the average person being so perturbed that someone is getting some enjoyment out of life by playing a game that they weren't going to buy anyway is unbelievably petty

Because if they want to play it, they obviously see some value in the game. They're just too cheap and dishonest to pay for it and hide behind the excuse of "wasn't going to buy it anyway".
