To be serious, an identity based on what you consume is definitely okay in general, but it can lead to problems if you're not really mature about it. You just have no control over the stuff that defines your identity, unlike your job, your looks, your ideas, etc. So when the people who define your identity (creators and businesses and even journalists etc) do something you don't like, you feel like it's a personal attack, ruining your identity. Like they are puppeteering you and you're helpless.. Except you are the one who attached the strings to them. A lot of people know how to avoid that but a LOT of people in consumer culture fall into that, especially in nerd culture and sports. In the past, game journalists helped push back on this stuff as allies. Now they could care less. It's up to gamers.
