We began four months ago. Four long, hard months of nominating and bracketmaking and predicting and voting and griping at each other for our general lack of good taste. We began with 192 songs, and ultimately we selected the (second-to-)last one in the bracket.

This marks the second Exa_Pico winner after year 7's champion of EXEC_SPHILIA/., marking the first time a series has won twice (unless you count Dreams of the Shore winning TOC1). However, it is not the first time a publisher has won twice. Square has three winners across different properties and Falcom has two. However, now that we have four winners between Gust and Falcom across the last seven contests, I think it's safe to say those two companies truly are the kings of the board.

So what's next?

If you're the type who will just crawl back into your lurker den until the contest begins again, we'll see you in February! However, it's worth noting that there are always on-going projects and games to keep our VGM interests alive throughout the off-season. Namely...

* There are several on-going ranking threads, including by NFUN, Mycro, Glacier and Gamebop. (I think cako had one, too?)
* Deogenerate is making preparations to revive Best OST. As the originator of that contest before I took over VGMC, I'm very excited to know that we're finally returning to that legacy.

On my own front...

According to the second-to-last poll I ran, everyone would like to see another crowd-sourced guessing game with no particular theme. So I'm going to ask everyone out there -- not just the guessing game regulars, but everyone who wants to submit -- to (privately) give me five songs.

Please remember that we want a decent mix of difficulties overall. While that doesn't mean that you can't give me 5 really easy songs or 5 really hard ones, on average I'd like to see the likelihood that someone will recognize your tracks go (really easy) - (pretty easy) - (average) - (fairly hard) - (intensely difficult).

I'm looking for at least 25 responses!

EXSPHERE is a good song but feels slightly underwhelming to me as a winner? At least it's a much more unique song than the last 2 years which is nice. (Full disclosure I probably like Emil/Karma more than EXSPHERE)

I kind of got burnt out on Sunshine Coastline by the end of last contest, but it's been a while now so I think I'm finally back in the mood to appreciate it, especially factoring in how much better it is than all of the extreme mediocrity representing Falcom this year no i am not referring to gurumin or vm japan (though i probably should count bomber girl). Probably the best one that's been in since IPB retired. Hell, probably the best one since IPB in general. That said, it's still not quite enough.

Servants thankfully isn't a meme beyond the game.

I want to vote for I Am The Wind purely for that one beautiful cover of it on OLRemix but the song itself I have to concede I just find directly inferior.

Worst winner since VGMC8, I think I'd say (Seize the Truth vs. Exsphere would be close for me). I like most champions quite a bit though, and Exsphere's not bad (I voted for it in most of its matches because bracket D was shit).

So, I did say in the final match's thread that I had some more things to say about the contest than what I did mention. Well, here they are.

Exsphere's a really great song, so I'm happy to see it as the contest winner. There were definitely a number of songs in bracket D (and by extension, the other brackets in general) that I would've taken over Exsphere, but I still like it a lot, so I think it's a more than acceptable contest winner. With regards to the poll options, I'd place my opinion of Exsphere in between "top tier" and "decent winner," but I'm gonna vote top tier anyway because of how much I like it in the end and the fact that I do think that it's deserving of the title of VGMC champion.

As I said in the other thread, this was my first time participating in VGMC! I guess I should also say that I only actually joined the B8 community in around mid-February, so I'm a pretty recent participant in the overall community as well.

I really want to reiterate how much fun I had being a part of this year's VGMC and also expand on that a little. In the beginning, it was really exciting to not only participate in a big contest like this but also to have nominations of my own that made the cut. That excitement never really went away even after my nominations and many of my favorites were eliminated. It's also nice to see that my VGM tastes seem to line up very well with Board 8 tastes in general. Speaking of Board 8 tastes, now that I think I have a bit of a stronger grasp on what the board likes in VGM, it makes me look forward to VGMC14 even more since now I have some new ideas on songs that might do well, or at the very least have a decent shot at getting into the bracket.

With all that said, this was an amazing 3 and a half months or so of my time and I'm very much looking forward to do it again next year!

If any of you missed the nomination period for these ranking threads and want to participate in one or are just looking forward to more ranking threads for whatever reason, I believe there are other people who have not yet started a ranking thread but are considering making one at some point in the future, myself included. As for me, I'm not sure when exactly I'd like to start one up. Maybe after some of the ongoing ones have concluded, but I'd definitely like to make one at some point!

1Mentioned this elsewhere I think but this sort of topic it can probably Bear repeating, I went into this contest extremely pessimistic based on past history I knew from some of these vgmcs & b8 and I'm very glad my pessimism was proven wrong. Now, many of my favorites went out pretty early on before retirement and all were gone by the final 8, but even still just with that final 8 I was still somewhat happy with Most of them. ExSphere is certainly a very interesting song with enough about it for me to like, even if it also incorporates a lot of elements I really don't care for. Cool choice for a champion, I can't complain.

I'm kinda curious about how Full Base vs. Servants of Scourge would've gone. That FB v. NWO tie breaker was very close, if just a single vote for NWO had gone the other way instead, I feel like things could've gone pretty differently with how different of a song Full Base was. Maybe, maybe not, who's to say, but still something I can't help but think about

Well I listened to some of the intros and skipped around a bit and from there I'd probably vote for xeno gear so count that if you'd like but if you want full listen sessions for votes you can take my abstain ( but I mean hey I don't see that rule in this topic)

Huh, I have no recollection of it being anywhere near as close as that. Like I was legit shocked when I saw the win counted because it seemed entirely out of the match.

EDIT: Never mind, just found the spreadsheet and I see now that elferia was extremely backloaded both times. It very much was losing both times I voted though, and megalovania's vote ratio did peak near 2:1 shortly afterwards. Evidently i never had it in me to actually check the topics afterwards.

Bonus Match 1 - Battle of the Champions:

Normally I just listen to the song at the top first, but I knew the quality of both songs beforehand, so I wanted to listen to the best one last. Now that I listen to EXSPHERE in a post-contest fashion, I think it's nice to hear it in that sense, although the "evil" parts it has hinder the quality of the "celebrational" moment it's in.

...Then I listened to Sunshine Coastline...

OH MY GOD!! VGMC12 really had an incredible quality. Despite not being one of the best songs last contest (that contest was insane), it still has an amazing quality and is ten times more deserving of the "Champion" title. It's quite interesting to have a battle of the "unstoppable in their respective contests" match. That's pretty hype, if you ask me.

Bonus Match 2 - Battle of the Calamities:

YEEES!! Thank you, azuarc! Brawl/Melee finally happened! Now I can know which song truly is better. *listens*...

I can't believe I don't have much to say about this particular, explosive encounter. Either way, 1NF3S+@+!0N has a catchy feel that's even kind of... funny, I guess? I mean, it's a dancing crabby we're talking about here. But that's only while directly comparing it to Servants, since the latter has an "extremely hard boss battle, but not necessarily the last one" feel, which is great, while also sounding more "serious".

I had the feeling I was going to side with Servants upon coming in, but wow, this is closer than I thought it would be. The thing is, 1NF3S+@+!0N has a super catchy beat and a perfect pace to accompany it and make the beat shine, but even if Servants is a lot more varied and has some amazing parts going for it at many points throughout, the main part (the one that lasts around 2 minutes and loops later on; you could even say the "meat" of the song) is a little weaker than 1Nf3$+@+!0N's entirety, but the amazing parts are a little better, so that's a real headscratcher.

I can't believe that one of the closest matches of the whole contest is one of the very last matches, but it makes sense, and it's what was intended from the beginning. (I also can't believe I just realized the "S" is actually a "$".)

Bonus Match 3 - Battle of the Weepy and Maybe a Little Cheesy Farewells:

I didn't think I'd come across two songs with such a similar style and feel. It's almost as if it was sung by the same singer. But the one from Xenogears is softer, cleaner, prettier, and overall, better.

However... This spoke to my heart: ...There's someone testing me every day I live... Well, the best of me is all I have to give.

My dad listened to the two finalists. Here's what he said:

"To me there is no doubt that the second one, exsphere etc. should be the winner. Very strong on close harmonies, polytonality, imaginative instrumentation. Just when it started to drift into a somewhat ordinary direction, the Persian sounding section takes off and raises the level of complexity and interesting sounds even higher. According to the second-to-last poll I ran, everyone would like to see another crowd-sourced guessing game with no particular theme. So I'm going to ask everyone out there -- not just the guessing game regulars, but everyone who wants to submit -- to (privately) give me five songs.

What is this?

It's one if the Discord vgm guessing games but instead of the normal way where one person just makes a list of songs, azuarc is having everyone who wants to submit five songs to contribute. This is the second time he's run one like this (the first being several months ago), which is why he's said "another" list.
