I do want to state for the record that disappointment in the new dub aside, I do applaud Netflix for using new talent and giving them a chance to shine. They didn't ask to have some of their first major roles be forever compared to one of the most legendary anime of all time. Hell, they were probably forced to pronounce NERV super weird, like how so many of the P5 names were fucked up.

I've noticed lately just how poor the localized script writing has been as of late for Japanese anime and games. It might be accurate, but the actual dialogue can just be absolutely cumbersome and are written in such a way that no actual English-speaker speaks.

I feel like Netflix has gotten this real bad a couple of times. Baki is an example, actually, where the VA work is fine, but the actual dialogue is completely and totally literal with basically no localization, other than, like...one scene where they just went wild with it.

I'm still not gonna forgive them for changing "I'm so fucked up". That's basically the one line that I think of the most when I think of Eva and the best representation of it.

Shit, they really replaced that? "Oh no, profanity is so unprofessional," my ass. It perfectly encapsulates just how screwed up the whole thing is along with Shinji's mental state.

EDIT: And that "Nairv" thing definitely sounds like an arbitrary director or higher-up fiat, just like how an above poster brought up the weird name pronunciation in Persona 5 which wasn't on the actors but the direction.

...as much as he tries to soften it at the end to say he was as faithful as possible, the lead in in that tweet does seem to imply that toning down the wording was something that he was instructed to make sure happened. "Can't refer to the decisions" implies that someone above him MADE decisions.

I was always going to be a bit resistant to a re-dub because "rawr change is bad" but I think I've mostly heard positive/okay impressions of it. Definitely some negative ones too but eh. Apparently a lot of captions are left untranslated too?

In the same way that video game companies are turning to roms to reproduce old games, a lot of anime rereleases are relying on goddamn VHS scrapes to get original audio. And we all know how VHS isn't exactly high quality audio to begin with.

My point is sub fans as FIERCLY vocal about something that is an exception (dubs being shit) rather than a rule. For instance, Love Hina was oneI will always watch subbed. Get Backers was another I recall hating quite a bit.

They auditioned, but apparently they only found out it was happening when the process was already underway, and at least one of them believes it was just a pity audition with no intention of giving them the part.

the dub is fine. it took a little while to get used to shinji's voice but it's okay. but they did make asuka a little less commanding

i turned subtitles on (while listening to the dub) for a little while during a quiet segment, and i noticed the subs slightly conflicting with the dubs. have noticed this with other anime on netflix

the dub changes the initial characterization of asuka a tiny bit, but not enough to change anyone's overall experience
