Gen 5 - PS outsells all competition combined
Gen 6 - PS2 outsells all competition combined x2
Gen 7 - Wii edges out PS3 and X360 by 100M to 80M units each. Sony screwed up here due to massive arrogance following PS2s success.
Gen 8 - PS4 outsells all competition combined, including 2 Nintendo consoles. Has been the worlds top selling console every quarter through Q1 2019.

Yet 1/3rd of the site voted Nintendo. Since 10 years from now is only one console cycle away (PS5/Scarlett could be supported from 2020 to 2027-8), Sony would have to screw up in a massive, massive way next gen. Either that or people are voting purely based on brand loyalty & fanboyism.

Imagine if you made this poll in 1996 and it was the still relatively fledgling PSX for Sony vs Nintendo coming off a massively successful SNES, which followed the highly successful NES, and a new powerhouse N64 debuting.

In fairness Sony's in this exact position again going into the next gen.

They're still probably going to be the top seller though since Nintendo pretty much is doing its own (still wildly successful) thing and Microsoft's new strategy is playing nice with everyone and positioning themselves to slowly erode the idea of exclusivity while also being the only guys on every other platform.
