#50. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/26/One_Flew_Over_the_Cuckoo%27s_Nest_poster.jpg
Dir: Milo Forman
Genre: Drama, Comedy
Year: 1975

When asked if he saw the film adaptation of his novel, Ken Kesey, once said something to the extent of "Would you want to watch your daughter be raped?" And he does have a point, though probably not for the reason he intended. Cuckoo's Nest (the film) is so good that I have no desire to ever read the novel. And I think I am not alone in that feeling.

This is the movie where Jack Nicholson became Jack. His performance brings McMurphy to life--a character who reminds me of probably a dozen people I went to school with, who probably never even heard of this film. It's a realistic portrayal of a man who doesn't want to conform to the absurdity of modern society, a feeling that was just as pervasive in the 1970s as it is now. His conflict with Nurse Ratchet is your classic individual vs establishment battle, and most of us probably know the depressing reality of how that one turned out. This is a classic in every sense of the word and the first of the 50 greatest films ever made!

Fingers crossed that Birdman is one of them. That might be my favorite film of the decade, full-stop.

Yeah, this one barely missed the list.

That year was just insanely stacked. Somehow 1994 makes it look like 1914 by comparison though.

I really like Rear Window, but I also saw it when I was younger (like, 12 years old) so it will always hold one of those nostalgic high spots for me. I made me realize how good suspense movies could be, and I went on a full Hitchcock binge after seeing it.

To touch on 30 posts ago, the problem with Ewoks is more that their subplot seems so fillery than the Ewoks themselves, which are mostly fine. Empire has a split between Luke and the Cloud City crew, but they both have a certain weight and end up meeting up in the end.

You could argue the space stuff links with Luke on the Death Star in a way, but the Ewoks feel really pointless even if that shield generator or whatever ends up mattering.

That being said I really like RotJ, probably more than ANH, just cause that Luke Death Star stuff is so amazing.

i've often seen this "if certain parts of the movie are great, it makes up for the bad parts" logic before but i've never understood it.

yeah, the luke/vader/emperor scenes are some of the best in star wars, but you have to sit through tons of ewok bullshit to get to them.

sure, i can just fast forward to the good stuff when watching RotJ at home... but the same goes for, say, RotS. hell, even TPM. nobody ever says TPM is a great movie just because "hey, at least the pod race and duel of the fates are cool!"

It's also about relative badness to goodness. Some great scenes can lift an otherwise mediocre movie a lot easier than an otherwise bad one.

Ewok stuff is pointless and a waste of time but unoffensive. TPM the bad stuff is much worse. Young Anakin in general tanks that movie hard. Also the pod racing isn't actually very cool. Duel of the Fates while good doesn't touch the throne room either.

yeah, i guess it does come down to how much you tolerate the ewoks. obviously i'm a lot less forgiving of them than a lot of other people.

to me, the ewok stuff is bottom of the barrel star wars. not as bad as the star wars holiday special or the anakin/padm romance, but probably on the level of jar jar and kid anakin.

but even if you think the ewok scenes are just mediocre and pointless, it still seems weird to me to say that RotJ is better than ANH just because of the throne room scenes. ANH also has lots of great scenes, and i'm struggling to think of any scenes that are mediocre or pointless in that movie.

Well big complaints I see about ewoks

1. They're cute teddy bear things that look ridiculous (don't care about this myself-- jawas already kinda had this going on in ANH)
2. They make Empire grunts look like a joke (outside of Vader and Palpatine I'd argue the Empire was already hurting on that front)

I guess they do make the walkers, which still had some credibility, look weak, but at that point it's more nitpicking for me. But I mean, yeah, if those things really bug you, I can see it tanking the movie hard. Like if I found them as obnoxious as young anakin I could see it. Jabba's Palace I could see having the same effect on the bounty hunters too if you really liked that part of the lore, cause they all kinda come off as clownish. Complaints about it kinda seem similar to how I felt about The Last Jedi in some ways, come to think about it. I'm like "it ruined space travel and combat forever and it ruined Luke" and people are like "heh why do you care about that nerd."

#49. The Social Network
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/8c/The_Social_Network_film_poster.png
Dir: David Fincher
Genre: Drama
Year: 2010

There were several works in the early part of the decade that have both set the stage for the rest of the 2010s and also served as paragons for this time period. For me, it was My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy for music, True Detective season 1 for television, and The Social Network for movies. Years from now, we may be calling The Social Network the movie of our generation--not necessarily because it's the best one, but because it really captures the spirit of what it was like to be in our late teens/early 20s living in this time.

I had several unrelated people come up to me and tell me that the Mark Zuckerberg character in this movie reminded them of me. I still can't tell if that's more of an insult or a compliment. But either way, I love how he is written and performed. By making Zuckerberg kind of a smartass, socially awkward genius, it takes what should be a bland story and really elevates it to something special. This is peak Sorkin writing and peak Fincher directing, which creates the perfect combination to reveal the true zeitgeist of the era.

#48. The Lion King
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/3d/The_Lion_King_poster.jpg
Dir: Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff
Genre: Animated, Musical
Year: 1994

The Lion King capped off one of the most incredible runs for a studio ever. This is not to say that Disney didn't keep churning out classics in the years following this, but none of them quite matched the cultural saturation of The Little Mermaid through the Lion King.

Everyone knows the songs from this movie, whether you're an old man or a little kid. It's hard to overstate how much Disney knocked it out of the park by recruiting one of the most prolific musical artists of the century to write hit after hit for them. In addition to the songwriting, there is also the beautiful setting (people don't realize how in vogue Africa was from like 1985-1995, so this was particularly meaningful), the perfect voice acting, and of course its universally beloved retelling of Shakespeare's Hamlet. The Lion King really has it all and remains the apex of the Disney Renaissance (though not the best one!).

#47. Bicycle Thieves
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/20/Ladri3.jpg
Dir: Vittorio De Sica
Genre: Drama
Year: 1948

I think the reason why Bicycle Thieves/The Bicycle Thief has such an enduring legacy is the fact that it feels so real. Oftentimes, movies try to capture a particular time and place in retrospect; that is, they are looking back with the benefit of hindsight and the perspective of their memories to recreate the feeling of a particular era. This happens most often for actual cataclysms like post-World War II Europe, for example.

Bicycle Thieves is that rare movie that was made during one of the most harrowing periods of human history. And that's what makes it so profound. The story of poverty and sorrow that we're watching is a contemporary depiction of it. There is nothing that memory or imagination can recreate that is as true to life as something like this film--in all of its desperation and tragedy. Bicycle Thieves transports you there, and there is nothing quite like it.

#46. Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/3c/SW_-_Empire_Strikes_Back.jpg
Dir: Irvin Kershner
Genre: Science Fiction, Adventure
Year: 1980

Here we go! I hope this leads to a lot of discussion, as I love the Star Wars OT tremendously and my rankings of the films have vacillated since I was a little kid. But right now, Empire (one of the 50 greatest films ever) ranks #2 in the OT for me.

But let's talk about what makes it great. A New Hope was a relatively simple story amidst a grand backdrop. After its theatrical success, this was Lucas's opportunity to bring that grandiosity to the main story, and they succeeded in leaps and bounds. Everything about Empire is bigger--but also darker. Anyone who's seen the Plinkett reviews will know this already, but Empire functions as a second act to the larger trilogy itself, meaning that this is where our heroes are generally at their lowest points in the series. But that's a perfect way to establish how huge of a fight it will be for the rebellion to take down the empire.

What else can I say about Empire? It introduced new elements into the Star Wars universe that (unlike the ewoks) were hugely successful in giving the series more color and depth. You have some deeper philosophical musings on the Force, the first appearances of Yoda, the Emperor, Boba Fett, and others. And, of course, the most iconic twist in movie history. It's something I wish I could have experienced in theaters without growing up with the Luke/Vader spoiler, because I cannot imagine how insane that must have been.

#45. Annie Hall
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/e6/Anniehallposter.jpg
Dir: Woody Allen
Genre: Comedy, Romance
Year: 1977

This is what everyone thinks of when they think of Woody Allen movies. And for good reason--Annie Hall is one of the smartest, sharpest, funniest, and deepest romantic comedies ever made.

Annie Hall has a more experimental narrative than one might realize. It jumps around in chronology, breaks the fourth wall, and is structured almost as sketches rather than scenes in a movie. There's a point in Annie Hall shortly after they visit California when you sort of ask yourself "okay, where are they going with all of this?" But then it all comes together brilliantly in the end. You realize the sketches that outline the structure of the film are made that way because they function as memories--short little snippets of a relationship that often stick with you longer than anything else. All of these coalesce as Alvy reminisces about Annie and it finally sinks in how much the little moments can matter in life. And it all closes with my favorite ending monologue, recapitulating an "old" joke about the absurdity of love itself.

I saw ESB when I was like 6 so I didn't know the spoiler. It was a pretty cool twist but not sure I really absorbed the weight of the spoiler though since I was like 6. But it was possible to see those movies spoiler free before the Internet was at full throttle, certainly.

I can't remember if I went in blind or not, but I was so young that it's irrelevant. If I was like 14 in 1980 I think I would have lost my shit.

1. They're cute teddy bear things that look ridiculous (don't care about this myself-- jawas already kinda had this going on in ANH)

the difference is that the ewoks are clearly meant to be humorous, though. when cute little teddy bears with spears take on stormtroopers (and defeat them) i definitely get a "this is so funny, right? lol!" vibe, and there's the moment at the end of that one ewok who's using the heads of stormtroopers as a drum kit. of course none of this is actually funny in the least, which is a problem.

the jawas were cute little creatures too, but they weren't used as a thinly-veiled excuse for lucas' terrible sense of humor. the ewoks were.

speaking of star wars, good to see ANH > ESB.

too bad TFA got snubbed, though. i'd easily take it over RotJ.

I enjoy TFA even if it has its problems. Hell, I enjoy every film in this list, but everything below 7 has some massive glaring flaw in it, and 7 itself just isn't up to scratch with the OT.

Yeah, it's tough. I think I touched on this in the Rosemary's Baby write-up, but I generally can do it unless the movie is pretty overtly a reflection of their monstrosity. It's made Manhattan unwatchable.

Even Rosemary's Baby can be a little rough to watch with the unconscious rape scene, given that Roman Polanski essentially did that to a 13 year old girl.

#44. Amadeus
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/2f/Amadeusmov.jpg
Dir: Milo Forman
Genre: Drama
Year: 1984

I love classical music. To me, with the exception of maybe epic poetry, it is the highest form of artistic expression that humanity has ever produced. So naturally, a movie like Amadeus has a huge appeal to me.

Amadeus is entertaining because it combines a (fake) historical account of 18th century Austria with a contemporary "rockstar" element that is so perfectly reflective of the 1980s. Salieri is the stuffy old guard of music, whereas Mozart is the irreverent rock-god genius who is destroying all convention. It sounds almost silly when written out, but it is pretty brilliant and wild stuff. Amadeus also happens to be one of the most pleasing films visually and, obviously, aurally--making it a must-watch for anyone interested in film on an aesthetic level.

#43. Aladdin
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/58/Aladdinposter.jpg
Dir: Ron Clements and John Musker
Genre: Animated, Musical, Fantasy
Year: 1992

Aladdin is my favorite (and the best) film of the Disney Renaissance. Arriving at this decision wasn't easy, but I sort of broke down each element to figure out what my #1 would be, and it mostly came down to this vs The Lion King:

-Best songs: Aladdin #1, The Lion King #2
-Best animation: The Lion King #1, Aladdin #2
-Best story: The Lion King #1, Aladdin #2
-Best voice acting: Aladdin #1, The Lion King #2
-Best characters: Aladdin #1, The Lion King #2

So what it really boiled down to were the characters. And Robin Williams as the genie in particular makes this movie stand out from the rest of the pack. A perfect performance--easily the best celebrity VO artistry of the era--packed with an emotional gut punch. Aladdin is one of the few movies that can make me tear up at the end, where Aladdin sacrifices everything to keep his word to the genie. We all had very lucky childhoods for having this in our lives.

#42. Raiders of the Lost Ark
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/4c/Raiders_of_the_Lost_Ark.jpg
Dir: Steven Spielberg
Genre: Adventure
Year: 1981

They just don't make movies like this anymore. Can you imagine a wholly original I.P. wherein the audience is treated to a fun, epic adventure with minimal political overtones and a completely new hero that everyone will know by name for the rest of their lives? Yeah, the 80s were a good time for movies.

I love all three Indiana Jones movies (there are only three), but Raiders is clearly the best one. Spielberg and Lucas essentially take the pulpy adventure serials of their childhoods and elevate it for a new era without trying to go for any "bigger" messages or other pompous grandiosity. Their focus is entertainment and good vs evil. For my money, this is the apex of this era of filmmaking, topped only by one other Spielberg passion project that we'll get to soon!

#41. Back to the Future
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d2/Back_to_the_Future.jpg
Dir: Robert Zemeckis
Genre: Science Fiction
Year: 1985

Back to the Future has somehow become underrated over time despite being one of the most profitable movies ever made. Everything about this film is flawless. It contains a basic but interesting premise, unique characters, one of my favorite scores in history, and genuine fun adventure.

Back to the Future also has an uncanny knack for building tension better than virtually every movie on this list, even though it's not inherently a thriller! Think for a minute about two scenes. The "Earth Angel" scene where Marty must ensure that his parents kiss in order to avoid literally disappearing from existence. It's heart-racing shit to have him literally dissolving as if there is a countdown clock ahead to the end. And, not to be topped, the climactic scene going back to the future also contains one of the most well-executed will-they-make-it events in film history. The movie is just so chock-full of these huge moments like these that it creates such an exciting, wondrous experience few others can dare to match.

#40. The Gods Must Be Crazy
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/59/Gods_must_be_crazyposter.jpg
Dir: Jamie Uys
Genre: Comedy
Year: 1980

SephG Superlative: The greatest African movie ever made

The first five minutes of The Gods Must Be Crazy is the best satire of society since Jonathan fucking Swift. I'm not exaggerating. I'm sure it's on YouTube, so do yourself a favor and watch it. It's filmed as a nature documentary, except the focus is on humans in a modern city--effortlessly pointing out the absurdity that is our daily routine with such tongue-and-cheek terse brilliance that it hurts my brain every time.

The rest of The Gods Must Be Crazy is fantastic as well, of course, even as it takes on a more standard narrative. Following the adventure of Xi, a traditional Bush person who sets out to throw the evil Coca-Cola bottle off the edge of the earth, we see various intersecting stories that lampoon civilization, politics, war, love, and consumerism. The characters are completely charming and lovable and it's one of the few movies where you're really truly rooting for the protagonists the entire time.

I rarely see this film discussed in any context, so please take my word on this. The Gods Must Be Crazy is one of the 5 or so best comedies ever made and a true classic in every sense of the word.

I suppose I meant that there's nothing really controversial about it. Nazis are bad, the end.

If this were made now, I am almost positive there would be not-so-subtle messages about American imperialism or bullshit about how we're close to being Nazis ourselves.
