Board 8 > How would they do in a contest? Day 27 ft Cammy, Pauline, Tony Hawk

This is a topic to rate the contest strength of potential newcomers in the current contest environment.

I will pick the characters to rate and discuss for each day from user nominations - whoever the 3 most nominated characters are at that time. If there are more than 3 I will pick randomly. You can nominate any number of characters at any time, but you cannot nominate the same character twice.

All characters who were present in the 2018 Character Battle will NOT be eligible. Otherwise you can nominate any character that has appeared in video games; even comic book characters. This will exclude real-life athletes who have only appeared in long running sports series, however I will accept those who have their own games such as Shaq. I will accept nominations for iconic gaming duos too, if both members of said duo are named in the title of a game (Banjo-Kazooie, Sam & Max Hit the Road, etc).

Each day will have a separate topic, and nominations will carry over. As far as actually rating the character's contest strength; I ask that users rank a characters potential strength with one of the following qualifiers - Low Fodder, Mid Fodder, High Fodder, Fodder Line, Low Midcarder, Midcarder, High Midcarder, Near Elite, Elite, LAW Tier (capable of beating Link). I will average all the ratings given to a character to come up with their final ranking. I have included a highlighted entrant from Character Battle X on each tier of the strength rankings below, to provide a baseline for each.

The question with Cammy is how much Gfaqs cares about a SF character who did not appear in vanilla SF. Cammy has a large role in the story of the series, and was available at release in Street Fighters 4 and 5. Due to her, um, appealing design and fan favorite status in the series, I think she will be quite a bit stronger than Guile. Low Midcarder for Cammy.

Tony Hawk is Mid Fodder. I only have him getting to Mid Fodder out of nostalgia for the good, early games in the series. I don't think that many people actually PLAYED as Tony himself in the games either. The last time the Tony Hawk series was relevant, it was for the wrong reasons when Pro Skater 5 came out.

Pauline is Mid Fodder. She would easily be low fodder prior to Super Mario Odyssey, but that game did a lot for making her actually matter for a lot of people. I doubt Gfaqs particularly cares about her role in a game from the early 80s.

I think most people recognize Tony Hawk, but won't get many votes based on people particularly liking him.

For Cammy there are 2 things that I think are being overlooked. First is just how much TJF (or TBF for Cammy) impacted results in CBX. Chun-Li put a good number on Ganondorf, and Velvet Crow of all characters looked stronger than Guile. Cammy is one of the foremost sex symbols in fighting games behind Chun herself. And lets not kid ourselves here: Cammy WILL get a butt pic.

Second is how deceiving Guile's contest performance was. I feel that the reason he performed badly speaks more about Guile himself than the Street Fighter series as a whole. Namely that no one really cares about Guile anymore, and he hasn't been hugely popular since the mid-90s. It took a guru pick to get him into the contest in the first place, and his design simply has not aged well. He was replaced in many SF games with Charlie or Remy, and it feels like fans don't mind his absence as long as there is someone to throw Sonic Booms.

On the other hand, Cammy got into SF4 and 5 because fans demand her presence. I can see the argument for her being High Fodder or Fodder Line, but can't see her being on the same level as Galeem or Big the Cat.

I forget who the Guru was this last contest, but it wasn't Guile.

Either way it was primarily this board that got him into the contest, but it was clear that didn't translate to a lot of contest strength.

Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth KOS-MOS the Wise? I thought not; it's not a story they would tell you.

I agree with everyone else about Pauline and Tony Hawk. As for Cammy, I'm going to say High Fodder. Even if she is only as popular as Guile, sex appeal should make a difference.

Also, 2018's guru noms were Aqua and Victor Sullivan.
