Those are two of the best. FFV's is the worst, and I don't think it's particularly close.

Galuf is a top tier character, and Faris is also pretty good. Easily enough to pull FFV at least ahead of FFII...!

X is a fantastic game, while XII is trash tier trash of the trashiest tier trash

Galuf and Faris are better than anything 8 has to offer. 8's the only one where I don't care for any of the main party. Luckily the guests (including Laguna's crew), are pretty decent.

If the entirety of FF8 was Laguna, Kiros, and Ward, I would have been happy.

Because while Vaan, Penelo, and Fran are varying levels of not great, Balthier, Basch, and Ashe are all high tier.

Let's see... Faris is good, Galuf is good, Bartz is passable. Lenna and Krile are whatever but unoffensive.

Squall has the best character arc in the entire series.
Rinoa makes that character arc possible while bringing charm to the game's big moments like the "Eyes on Me" Ragnarok sequence. Bonus points for her being the leader of a resistance group.
Zell is 90s Ryuji and criminally underrated.
Irvine has swagger and more importantly brings a compelling flaw (chokes in big moments)
Quistis is admittedly underdeveloped but compelling and flawed (doubts herself despite being a mentor).

Only Selphie sucks.

Zidane and Steiner were likable as well. Garnet/Dagger, though bland, wasn't bad either. But beyond the four we mentioned, FF9 is meh. Should've involved Beatrix long-term.

I remember liking Zidane/Steiner, although it's been 15 years since I played FF9.

I'm surprised to see people coming down hard on FF9. Usually it's outright worshiped on this board.

Zidane can be okay if you don't care about natural feeling character development. I feel like he sorta just gets forced through character arcs and if you just take it at face value it works, but it ends up hurting the character for me. Probably a victim of bad writing more than the concept inherently being bad-- if they tried to do less with him he'd be a lot better. Early game Zidane is fine and he progressively gets worse until the awful You're Not Alone scene which really encapsulates everything wrong with the character.

Steiner on the other hand is just obnoxious comic relief throughout the game really.

This sums up my thoughts perfectly. Although Amarant is also okay. Honestly he felt tacked on like Umaro in FF6.

Yeah, FFIX is like FFXII where the cast is 50/50 between good and not good, with Eiko being one of the worst party members in the series.

Yeah, that's my opinion on Amarant too. It's like they wanted an 8th party member but didn't bother to develop him at all. You could take him out, make Beatrix the 8th party member and not have to change the plot that much.

I agree with that take on Amarant. Amarant is basically the guy who just doesn't really want to participate in FFIX.

Second best FFIX character btw.
