GDQ's inspired me for a goal: to practice on a game for a year and get the world record on it by SGDQ2020. I wanted to make sure I followed the right ground rules to do so though.

If I want to own an official world record and want to be considered for future GDQ-events.....

1) What is the rule on emulation? Do I have to have the original console and controller hooked up to a separate television?
2) What are the basic tech needs to capture video?
3) Does streaming live have to be a requirement? If so, what other tech do I need?

What else am I not considering? I just wanna go fast and be the very best.

I'm sure @-hotdogturtle-- would be more than happy to help.

There's a board set up for it here:-

Got a game in mind?

Emulator rules usually vary by game. Some communities consider them valid, some require original hardware in order to claim a record. GDQ and other live events always play on real hardware only.

Streaming is never mandatory, but in this day and age most people consider it a big credit to your legitimacy to get to know you. You don't want some guy that no one knows coming out of nowhere and posting a pre-recorded video of a record time. It's really easy to get into streaming now.

Consider a few games you'd like to run and find them on speedrun.com

Most will have forums and links to resources, discord servers, etc.

If you choose something obscure that has literally no community based guidelines yet, feel free to make them up as you go :)

Also, greetings from the GDQ donation station

Cool, thanks for the advice. So then, say I was able to practice with streaming on an emulator up to the point where I was in record-contention, then from there invested in the console and original game to seal the deal for going to GDQ or what have you (or perhaps to officially get the record). I take it this is a reasonable route to go?

Looks like beginning and ending rules are in place but otherwise it's freeform.

And greetings!!!
