I'm surprised people still take social media that seriously. Does that large a portion of society just not have the ability to think for themselves or question what they're told? It's no surprise some think we're living in a simulation mostly made up of NPCS.

You're aware that just about everything has a facebook page these days right? This means official pages will post. Still I don't take news outlets seriously anyway. Their newspapers are just as trash as their Facebook pages. Still I need some kind of updates on news.

It's been awful. There are tons of people who just can't get it into their heads that anything not linking to a first hand source is worthless at best, and actively harmful at worst. Then there's Deepfakes. What happens when we have undeniable video "evidence" of something like Pizzagate?

Honestly, that has existed since a long time ago. Court jesters were often used at banquets in order to make political statements disguised as entertainment.

They shouldn't be considered an information source. They're marketing. They're advertising first and current events pretense second (or even third after social engineering).

So every magazine, newspaper and TV news are just advertising first and foremost right? It's no different. I only need to click if I care about the full story anyway. Most the time I do not.

Exactly, none of them should be taken at face value.

I always assume that the effects are overstated, but then I run into people who didn't know that the upside-down book in GWB's hands was photoshopped and it's been a decade since that happened. And I know a lot of people who share fake news and then, even after being called on it will remark, "Well, it's something that the president actually thinks!"

While fake news has always been a thing, it was usually restricted more to the *actual* media lying. However, now we've democratized fake news so it's not just the media lying and misleading the public.

Usually the first thoughts on my mind is about why do some folks rely on one or two news source instead of cross referencing what they've heard/read with multiple sources and/or each sources on the opposing side? If I see something on CNN I would look it up again on Fox to see it from their perspective and vice versa.
