I cant see any games on there I really care about. Honestly the only one I would actually care to make an effort to watch would be the re2 run, but they scheduled it for 11pm in the middle of the week when most people have to be in bed for work. insane how they figured that was a good idea...obviously that would be one of the main draws being a new game with a large fanbase. not sure what they were thinking this year

Scheduling is always a moving target, you never really know when a run is gonna happen and it's not always possible to put it in primetime. We're already a bit behind schedule as it is

Anyway I hear this complaint every six months and don't really understand it, schedule has plenty of intriguing stuff

I mean, it really depends on what your standard for "standing out" is, I really enjoyed the SMB2, DKC2, Sonic Generations, and Minish Cap runs so far, looking forward to Castlevania, Metroid Prime, and a big block of various NES/Genesis stuff tomorrow, super hyped for Zelda 1 Randomizer the day after since that's my baby but also looking forward to Punch-Out, Pokemon Crystal, etc, later I wanna see BOTW, MM, ALBW, SMW, SMS, B-K, MM3/MM11, LttP+SM, CT, and some various other little stuff like Tetris, Diablo 2, Ristar, Cave Story, Monster Boy, etc

I dunno, like, if it's not your thing it's cool but I have as much to look forward to as I do on any year. I live for this shit though

How many more games are there to speed run that are new? We've kinda seen it all now. These events arent what they used to be. Not their fault, just the hyper influx of this stuff due to social media

so many people barely tune in to watch new games anyway so can't please everyone. Speedrunning community also skews retro pretty hard in general

but there's tons of games that don't always get a chance at gdq, and there's a trickle of new stuff as well

I mean if gdq just doesn't feel new to you anymore and it loses its luster because of that that's fine, but like, that doesn't mean gdq got worse

Well i mean, even watching the classics speed run again to possibly see a half second better time isnt really that interesting. I'm not saying its that bad, just we've kinda reached peak retro speed running, many games are reaching a level that maybe only a computer can beat.

I mean people rewatch movies and TV series all the time. If you don't enjoy rewatching runs you've already seen that's more on you I think. All of the games I'm excited to see this week are runs that I've already seen but there's something about the atmosphere and the runner's energy that makes it exciting again.

Yeah, I'm not saying TC is wrong, but literally every GDQ I hear "this is the weakest schedule EVER" regardless of what is up there. And I totally agree that I never know which runs are going to be great until after I see them.

this post seems to be more about speedrunning in general than GDQ but either way, i totally disagree. i think it's super cool to see how speedrunners are making WR runs just a little more perfect each time (super mario bros. any% is a good example of this).

basically this

I always watch any Sonic game as well as any weird broken bullshit from the Awful Games Done Quick block

there's ALWAYS a reddit thread where people share what runs were good, I will watch some of those too

if I watch something live it's usually really good timing, I am never free or awake when interesting stuff happens

also I will take the time to get up on my soapbox to complain about the thing I always complain about:

nobody wants to watch a fucking 6 hour speedrun of chrono trigger or ANY RPG. what an awful way to end an event. every time I see this on the schedule I'm baffled. people MUST like it because they keep doing it. I don't care if 6 hours is a very fast time to beat an RPG, to me a "SPEED" run is something that is done very quickly, and doing a "speed" run of an RPG is just "I beat the game very very quickly" and that's cool and all but not something I wanna watch

They can be, but when the records are happening so much more infrequent due to peak performance, its harder to remain interested in anything in speed running

some people like those kinds of runs, yeah. i think para is super into some of them. they're not my favorite thing in speedrunning but they can be cool.

anyway, "a speedrun is something that's done very quickly" is just wrong. there's tons of speedruns that take hours, and not just in the RPG genre.

There's someone online who does a FF7 100% run every other week or so, takes around 17 hours. He's finishing one right now actually! Calebhart42 on twitch.

I'm not going to necessarily sit there and watch for 17 hours but it's nice to have on in the background. Sometimes I watch another streamer who does all unique moons in Mario Odyssey and that takes around 8 hours.

I would actually sit on my couch and watch an hour long speedrun but longer RPG streams are just background noise for me. It's a more chill atmosphere most of the time and you get to see a lot of improvisation because so many fights can go wrong.

the suspense in knowing that at any point something can wrong and the run can die is definitely one of the things i personally find appealing about longer runs. when something goes wrong in a very short run, you typically just reset and get back to the same spot in mere minutes.

This. I watch a guy do FF7 runs (not 100%) every so often, and there's like three bosses that can just utterly destroy the run if you get bad RNG. Demons Gate, Carry Armor, and I think Schizo. It's so much fun to watch when he gets to those bosses just to see if the run continues or not.

I have a hunch the RPG finale gives them a lot of time for reading donations, which means a lot of people will give donations, and the end is a good time for it since people will think "boy I did watch a lot of this stream, I should donate".

I love really long RPG runs because if you're there from the beginning and you watch the whole run, it feels like you've been on a real journey by the time it's over. You get really well acquainted with the game being run and the process of running it, and it's just really fun to me to look at the whole course of the run and be impressed by how far you've come after it's over 6 hours later. My favorite part is the planning involved - there's something so satisfying to me about seeing the runner make some kind of preparation early on in the game and having it pay off hours later, like picking up an item early to use in the final boss fight and the like. Because it's a long run there's lots of opportunities for interesting planning and routing decisions and if the runner is good at explaining what they're doing and why I get really wrapped up in it. Love to curl up on the couch with a long run, get settled in, and just watch it unfold and go on that journey.

Personally, I think watching any turn-based RPG is boring, unless it's to (re-)experience the plot (which doesn't apply to speedruns where you're skipping cutscenes and scrolling through dialogue as fast as possible). I appreciate there's a lot of decisional skill, and I'm sure it's fun to actually play, I just don't get the appeal of watching.

I might like them more if I had a second monitor and could just, like, tune in at tense boss fights and stuff.

well, the decisional skill is part of the appeal. a lot of what i like about speedruns in general applies to runs of long turn-based RPGs, really. it's just fun to watch someone having mastered a game and knowing so much about it and there's always the suspense of "will they get a PB (or even WR)?" the runner being good/entertaining helps a lot. of course not every one of these kinds of runs is super entertaining but i quite enjoy some of them.
