A Navy SEAL who was declared "too old" to join the New York City Fire Department has WON his battle to become one of them after New York state passed a bill that increases the age limit and allows him to achieve his dream!!

Special Operations Chief, Shaun Donovan, who has roots in Staten Island, was told in 2017 that he was above the 35 age limit to become a firefighter. He was 35 when he applied, but was 6 months and 25 days too old to be under consideration.

Under the current law, military members can be 6 years older than the FDNY age limit of 29, but the Navy SEAL who served 4 tours in Iraq and Afghanistan had missed the cutoff by 7 months

The Senate voted unanimously to pass the bill that allows a vet of 7 years, once he or she reaches 29, can join the FDNY

Governor Andrew Cuomo is expected to sign the law

His attorney, Kevin Carroll, who was working the case pro-bono said Shaun is thrilled of the outcome

The FDNY has one of the strictest age caps in the country with Boston a close second at 32

Donovan, whose military service ends in 2020 said it was disappointing at first as he took the test and applied and at no point did t hey say he couldn't even get the job cause of his age. He even scored in the top 1% of the written exam and passed the physical with ease.

But his dream was to be a firefighter and Democrat, Andrew Gounardes said there's a special place in his heart of the FDNY as he co-sponsored the bill to increase the age limit.

Mayor Bill De Blasio was also pleased with the passage who said "If you're a veteran who was served his country proudly, your age shouldn't be a barrier to continue serving our fellow"

Donovan became a SEAL in 2005 and garnered several medals of valor and captured the interest of fire depts in other cities such as Denver and SF but his heart was in New York.

Do you think there should be an age limit to be a Firefighter?

I'd say so long as said applicant meets the physical and mental demands, age shouldn't be a major factor. I'm not exactly a good comparison but some folks older than me, including a mentor in his 60's, I'd say is overall physically stronger than me.

Once again the law proves that only the government is allowed to violate the Constitution. I believe its the 14th Amendment and all that... Equal protection, anyone...?

How does this relate to a job that can be both physically and mentally demanding?

If they can do the job, then let them. The age thing is kinda dumb, anyway. As its only a limit for joining...

I voted yes but I meant when they're at least 50+ 35 is ridiculous to claim somebody is too old to be a firefighter.
