They didnt have any problem with gaining weight due to not enough space? Or getting frustrated and stuff?

Thats enough room. If you have one cat, you have to make sure to play with them to give them exercise anyway.

Okay so no reason to feel bad? Like Im keeping it in a prison?

Yes... but get two. They like company. Two is easier than one.

From my extensive cat experience if I could start again from no cats, I'd get bonded adults. Lower energy, social, already have a friend, they settle in easier too.

Just properly catify your apartment and you'll be fine

But wouldnt it be way too small for two cats? Already feel like a one bed apartment is too prison-like for one cat.

And Id of course give it toys and stuff but wouldnt to completely turn it into a cat jungle, still want it to feel like a home. Sounds like two cats would be too much? Theres a brother and sister going for sale though, was thinking of getting the girl only.

Cats like vertical space. Give the cats things to climb and perch on and their living area is much bigger. Any animal kept strictly indoors needs their environment tailored and enriched. You don't have to go crazy. If it seems like too much then maybe reconsider the commitment of a pet.

I have 3 cats in a 700 sq ft 1 bedroom. It's not ideal, but they are doing just fine with it. It's laid out well with windows and a pretty long way to run. You should play with your cat every day and that helps keep them happy and calm. Older cats also don't really care to run around nearly as much.

Any reason why you'd buy and not adopt?

No. My first two cats were brought up in a 8x10 foot room. They were just fine. You just have to keep them occupied.

bad idea

my kitten would just tear up the floor to try and walk around the house
so we had to let it in the garage or outside

the people in this topic obviously have mentally ill cats or something
cats can have a territory of up to a half mile in every direction
even the most handicapped of cats can find their way home

my cats now spend 95% of their time indoors but they're usually at a window or in the garage
my entire property is 0.34, that you can kind of corral if you have fencing everywhere

Never looked into adopting. Im very specific about what I want - white kitten with pink nose, green/blue (or both) eyes. If I can get a kitten for free by adopting I wouldnt mind either tbh.

Good to know its not too small an apartment then if youve got three cats in 700ft2.

Adoption isn't usually free either but it typically covers the essential medical care right away which can be very costly. I've seen many all white cats with green or blue eyes (or both at once) for adoption

FYI solid white cats are all at risk for some real medical issues so intentionally seeking one out that has been bred (especially if there were two matching parents) is asking for trouble

idk, sounds like your cat is the mentally ill one. Most cats aren't that bad. My brother's is, but his was a stray that got used to living outdoors so it went absolutely bonkers when left inside.

This.

It's my flat, I don't have a landlord. Legally there's nothing in my lease stopping me getting one so I'm okay on that front. Just thought I'd be a bad person keeping one cooped up in a relatively small apartment but guess that's not the case if I give it enough vertical space and playthings.

Highly likely to have full or partial deafness (more common with blue eyes) but also extremely prone to skin cancer from sun exposure. In cats that mostly affects their nose, ears, and face area.

Fur color genetics ties to many aspects of health, and an all white cat is going against the grain. White cats are pretty but intentionally breeding white cats is not smart

There's no guarantee that an all white cat will be deaf. And deaf cats are still great cats. Just be aware it's common.

For the sun exposure, sunscreen on the ears nose and thinner fur spots if kitty is outside. Shouldn't be as much of a concern fully indoors. UVA still gets through windows. You can get windows that block UV light better

In that case she is likely deaf in the ear next to the blue eye. Set everything up before she comes home, let her explore at her own pace, and of course join the cat thread with pictures

Thanks boys n girls. Is there any truth to having to keep the litter tray and food and all her toys in one room for the first few weeks?

I'm obvs gonna keep her food tray in the living room, and put her litter tray in my bathroom - it'll always stay open or at least ajar.

Should I put everything in its permanent place at the start or have everything in one room first?

Set them up normally. Introduce your cat to the house near the litter box and let her explore from there. Keep the food and water apart from each other as well.

Keeping food and water apart from each other is a new one to me. Whats the reason?

Cats naturally seek water away from food so as to avoid contaminated water sources. Cats will drink a lot more if the food and water are further apart. I keep the water in a separate area from food for this reason.

Yes because it's water away from food, they seek it out very strongly if they otherwise have no access

If my cats go for the toilet I know I need to set up more water in a different area

Interesting. Weve never had a problem with dehydration. But one of our cats is finicky about the water bowl.

We just replaced it. We tried a fountain and none of them liked it. Heh.

My cats hated the fountain to start and love it now. I'm sorry if your kitties snubbed the fountain

Sure you can, so long as it's not a Maine Coon. A 1br upper-floor apartment is fine for a normal-sized cat so long as you're not a hoarder & you're careful about not letting them out onto outside windowsills or balconies. I had an indoor cat for 7 years & she was entirely happy in my previous 1br & current 2br places. She liked to sit on the windowsills inside & watch the world through the glass, but she was scared of traffic so she never wanted to go out there.

Sadly @FatalAccident there's no treatment for congenital hearing loss for felines

I'd honestly suggest learning sign or other ways to communicate. Getting familiar with cat body language will be very helpful to you
