People who have no idea about arts and animation just parrot what they read online.

CalArts is one of the top universities in art, turning out pixar heavyweights and many succesful animators.

Spiderverse had a budget. That's the big difference here between that and "lol, calarts" complaints.

It's a meme that came from career manchild and serial pederast John Kricfalusi in the late 90's/early 2000's because he was butthurt about Brad Bird's work getting popular, and his art didn't fit his view that all cartoons should just look like the same as they did in the 50's. It's a sentiment that's been picked up by more contemporary manchildren who are equally upset that cartoons aren't the exact same as when they were children.

I think people are too hard on the "calarts" style lately. I don't think its as bad or as all over the place as people act like it is.

Calarts gets a bad rap due to all of the nepotism and grads with terrible artstyles that has came out of the school in the past 5-7 years.

There's legitimate criticism aimed at CalArts, but they've produced some decent work. Gumball in particular is fantastic.

I haven't actually read up on the "calarts artystle" conspiracy but I'm pretty sure those shows look like that because of market research rather than CalArts teaching people that that is the 'correct' way to draw cartoons for kids

Most Calart stuff on CN has been great though. Flapjack, Adventure Time, Regular show, over the garden wall, etc.

Have 2 good friends from HS who graduated from CalArts. They both got great jobs afterward although I think one started his own company a few years out of school. I'd say it's a great school.

Yeah and HB in the seventies used even more shortcuts then the Calarts style gets blamed for now. Many HB characters where the same body with a different animal head attached.

Anime gets a pass because it has a story to tell.

A cartoon is lucky if it even has an ongoing narrative. CalArts style just makes everything look so empty.

As an artist myself, I find online tutorials and videos a better learning source.

I still don't understand why the Deitch-era Tom and Jerry gets so much airtime on CN nowadays, when it belongs in the garbage.
