Yeah, that's from the video game movie I watched two weeks ago! She's Lois Lane in the movie. Her song was pretty good.

It's almost like movies have people that direct things like how characters are supposed to be portrayed.

Carol Danvers being a personality-less vacuum is a large part of why I predicted the movie was going to be terrible as soon as they announced it in the first place. If Brie played the character correctly she's lame and boring, if she played it vibrantly and made it interesting it's hardly Carol Danvers anymore.

Though I also get the impression that Brie doesn't give a shit about the Marvel movies other than enjoying the large paycheck, so she was mostly going to sleepwalk through her performances no matter what the director or the script told her to do.

So how many of the MCU actors were super into comics and weren't in the movies just for a paycheck?

Some of them.

Chris Hemsworth? He feels like someone who's actually putting effort into the role, and who turns out a better performance the more invested he is, which improves the film. Natalie Portman? Paycheck, 100%.

I'd say most of the main character actors seem to be invested to at least some degree, but some of the supporting cast actors are entirely checked out, and Brie definitely doesn't seem to give a damn.

I could be wrong, but I don't get the impression that she really cares about her character other than for the payday, so she can then take lower-paying films that are more artistically fulfilling to her.

Uhm, I meant for the first movie they are in how many of them knew and cared about the characters? Like RDJ, did he care about Iron Man the comic book character, or was it just a pay check? Chris Evans, did he care about Captain America as the comic book character, or was it just a pay check? From when they first took the role, not down the line when they've settled into the character.

You mean RDJ, the actor pretty much everyone on Earth said was the single most appropriate actor to play Tony Stark, who pretty much lived every second of the role, who was borderline method acting for half the film, and who made an entire world that barely gave a fuck about Iron Man wind up seeing him as one of their favorite characters ever?

Yes, I'd say RDJ cared about the character.

Keep in mind, I'm not saying an actor needs to be a huge fan of the character and who they were before they took the movie (that's not what "caring" means). I'm talking about the difference between taking the character you are given and really trying to get into that character's head, make them seem like a real, vital person, and make people care about that character... versus showing up, reading the lines you're given, doing what the director tells you, and then clocking out completely because you don't care. One of those mindsets tends to give you great films. The other gives you the Star Wars prequels.

You can usually tell which actors care about a character and which don't. It's especially obvious when you see them on press tours - the actors who seem genuinely excited about their own movie and willing to engage with interviewers and fans tend to be the ones who actually tried to put something of themselves into a film, while the half-assers tend to come across as if they wish they could be anywhere other than where they are at that moment.

Well ok, there's one. Oh, I'm pretty sure Tom Holland was a fan and cares about Spider Man! So there's 2!

So you're saying that only method actors can give good performances? I bet there's plenty of examples out there of someone who went in, read the lines, did what the director said and it was considered a good performance.

With all due respect, modern awards are more about identity politics than actual talent these days.

People seem to think they have this superior sense that can detect when people can't act. It's almost as if they think Hollywood doesn't have people hired specifically to pick out the person who they think will act the part the best.

Given the lineup she was up against, I'd be interested in what she got it for then.
