That episode was fucking hilarious. The punchline was her black friend went around acting like a Jewish caricature in the same way she did with the blackface.

The punchline was she was treated like shit because everyone thought she was a super racist walking around in blackface, and her character was so ignorant of why blackface is offensive she misinterpreted it as racism. In the end though, they still ironically learn a valuable lesson about empathy despite their obvious misinterpretation of their experiences.

It should be noted that Sarah is played as the foil the entire episode and the consensus of nearly everyone is that Sarah shouldn't do this because it's extremely offensive and insensitive. The moral byline of the episode is quite literally, "Blackface is really, really bad and you'd have to be an idiot, like Sarah Silverman's character, not to realize it."

Of course, the actual context doesn't matter because even the use of something racist to prove racism is bad is, itself, racist in today's society.

It was a great episode.

Yeah it never plays off the blackface as a positive thing whatsoever, shes portrayed as not only a giant idiot for doing it but an even bigger idiot for not realizing why people were mad. Her character was depicted as blatantly wrong for doing it. She was the punchline.

its funny because real life is playing out exactly like the episode

That is because we keep dumbing down the definition of racism. Intent and context continue to mean less and less. All that matters is what is seen in a short video clip along with a sentence or two description.

Honestly I'd say it's more McCarthy-ish than anything else. People seem to get off on virtue signaling and public shaming, preferably together.

The idea that black face cannot be portrayed on TV in any capacity is silly. It needs to be done carefully and it always needs to be portrayed negatively. If used in comedy the punchline can't simply be that a character is in blackface but how terrible or unaware the character using blackface is.

For instance in Always Sunny, when Mac put on blackface, the joke isn't that Mac is wearing blackface but that the Gang are such incredibly horrible, unaware people that they would even do it.

Obviously, a movie company can decide to not employ someone that could potentially bring their company into disrepute. This is a standard PR move by them.

The real issue here imo is how flaky we've become as a society that this is enough for a company to flake. I'm not saying blackface isn't an issue. I'm saying holding a grudge over someone who reconciled their opinions and did a complete about face (hah) on their previously terrible judgment is kinda ridiculous.

Easy for me to say, I'm a white guy. I just don't understand what more you can want from a person after so long.

So a comedian showed poor judgment, was called out, they apologised and went on to not do that thing anymore. Is that not enough, or do we need to keep them from employment for the next 3 decades

Blackface is only offensive if it is used to mock black people and say "this racist characterization is accurate" blackface is not racist if it's used to mock racists and racism.

This should be obvious.

"I don't stand by the blackface sketch," she told GQ last year. "I'm horrified by it, and I can't erase it. I can only be changed by it and move on."
She added: "That was such liberal-bubble stuff, where I actually thought it was dealing with racism by using racism. I don't get joy in that anymore. It makes me feel yucky."

It's a shame she thinks like this now. It's because of this kind of thought that she got fired.

Not racist does not automatically mean not offensive. No one thinks Sarah is a racist. But, that doesnt mean her little black face skit wasnt a painful kick in the balls to anyone who remembers when black face was a thing and who had to live with that self esteem shattering image.

People aren't responsible for what their content reminds you of, only what the content is.

And people being offended by their memories doesn't mean the content itself is bad or to blame.

Not too long after my brother hung himself simpsons had a joke where Homer hung himself briefly in a noose in front of bart and lisa before the tree he hung himself on broke.

I don't hold the simpsons accountable for that reminding me of my brother.

Is it? Think of it like this, what if it was your money? What if you just paid out a couple million dollars to make a movie? Then youre in the middle of making it and you find out one of your stars did something that might turn into a shit show and cause people to boycott your film. Suddenly your not getting paid and worse yet, you could be out millions. So, do you do nothing and go broke in the name of some moral high ground? Or do you replace the potential people and earn your money?

But it shouldn't turn into a shit show.

In reality it would be like 40 people on twitter being outraged and then clickbait sites making it into a thing when it's not. We are adults we should be able to be like "nah man, that's dumb. We aren't going to give small bands of crazy people attention"

She should never have apologized for the skit. All she ever needed to say was "the skit was making fun of racial ignorance...I see no problem with that".

I highly doubt her apology was sincere, as I am sure she realizes that she doesn't have anything to apologize for. But she probably did it as a positive PR move, even though I feel like winds up being more of an admission of guilt than anything else.

Yep. It actually seems like her outlook was more enlightened when she made that show than it is now.
