I floated this idea in the Board 8 sports discord, but wanted to open it to a wider audience. Years ago, somebody (Dr Football maybe?) operated a competition that had users involve themselves in a variety of fantasy sports leagues, tournies, and pick 'ems. The results of those competitions were tabulated into a master standings table. It was an interesting premise but very difficult because nobody involved is well-versed in every sport. I think eventually it feel off because participation by the entrants began to fall off, understandably so because this is a year-long commitment.

I am considering trying to bring it back before Fantasy Football kicks off for the season. I like the idea and feel equipped to try my hand at learning new sports via trying to run a successful fantasy team. However, to maintain momentum, there would need to be a committed group of participants willing to be active in every league regardless of their knowledge of the sport or event. That's why this topic is merely gauging interest as opposed to launching the project.

Here are the competitions I'd make eligible (so far):

Fantasy Football
Fantasy Premier League Soccer (this has already kicked off but leagues can still be made)
Fantasy Basketball
Fantasy Hockey
Fantasy Baseball
NCAAM Basketball Tournament
NCAAW Basketball Tournament
NCAAF Bowl Pick 'Em
MMA Pick 'Em (we'd pick the numbered UFC main cards for a year)

I'd be willing, and hopeful, to add more but that is when you start getting into the more obscure and harder to play sports. I've also toyed with one-off pick 'em events like Triple Crown horse races and the Royal Rumble as sort of side competitions to earn additional points.

Of course, all of this planning is moot should nobody be interested. If you think you could commit to playing and being active in various fantasy sports leagues regardless of your knowledge in the sport itself, say so here. If you have ideas to make this more appealing, please present them. If the interest isn't there, well, c'est la vie I suppose.

Realistically what I'd do is do (or at least set up, if I'm not available) the draft for each sport, have good intentions on following through, and completely fail to do so. I assume that's not enough for you but if you need a filler to round out the numbers I can be one >_>

I am in as well, though when I think fantasy I think the traditional "draft players and play out the year" rather than including pickems or tournament stuff. But it's whatever the majority wants.

I would suggest adding 1 off's of NASCAR - Daytona 500, IndyCar - Indy 500, and F1 - Monaco.
I would suggest their whole seasons, but I know racing is hated.

Now that I'm home and in front of a keyboard, I'll try and add more thoughts on how this could be formatted.

--8-10 is probably the ideal number of participants. 6 or 12 is probably doable. Anything more or less is probably not worth it.

--For leagues, I'd probably start with whatever the default scoring system is and open the floor to a vote on adding or removing certain statistics.

--To diversify overall scoring and make winning something more valuable, I'd probably add extra points to first place. For leagues, I'm thinking extra points for the regular season winner and also extra points for the playoff winner. For multiple week pick 'ems, I'm thinking extra points for winning a week (nothing too crazy, though) as well as extra points for winning the entire competition.

--I think I'd want to make certain competitions more valuable than others, maybe some sort of tier system. My logic is tier-based. For example, winning a fantasy football league generally requires more thought and attention than pick 'em league, at least when you are playing relatively casually like we are. I'd tier it as Leagues, Pick 'Ems, and Side Competitions (those would be the one-offs).

--In the event this became a multi-year affair, the marathon would begin at the start of Fantasy Premier League (since Fantasy Football is the most popular fantasy sport but Fantasy Premier League starts about a month before it) and end with the conclusion of Fantasy Baseball, at which point the winner of the marathon would be declared. Once the overlap with baseball and Premier league hit, we'd just have two different marathons happening until Fantasy Baseball ended. Maybe I'd try and find a softer spot in the fantasy sports schedule if need be.

Any other thoughts? If everybody who has posted in here so far is interested, that gives us 5 for the moment. I know I said committed people are best, but as long as you just don't forget about your teams and remember to check in on this once a week, you are probably fine.

It sounds really interesting and I really want to try it. Be warned though I have idled out of fantasy leagues and such in the past, but I have also won a board 8 fantasy league! But anyway I'd be down to enter if you'd have me

It was me who attempted this years ago. (stole it from another board)

It is extremely hard to stay invested in the sports I had no knowledge in (and i dont think i have time to join in this one)

I believe everything you listed were the events that I ran as well

This sounds great but I simply dont have the time to commit. Ill be running a number of those anyway but not all.

You should just do an ESPN Streak for the Cash style game instead.

We have 7 people (including me) who have definitively said they would enter.

Zazi
Nick
Tom

MZero

Corrik

LOLIAmAnAlt made a suggestion but did not indicate either way their interest.

If I can get 8 people who say confidently say they would enter, I'll start trying to concretely format things and work on setup. I'm willing to go as high as people enter, but anything beyond 12 starts getting really dicey for most leagues.

Out of that list I'd be good at like 3 (the first 3), the others I'd be clueless on.

That being said I might still be interested. I think the only issue would be that it would be a hell of a time investment to be involved with a lot of those league concurrently.

I think I'm going to table this for now. I'd still like to do it someday, but I'd like to have more time to figure out a format and setup that would make things flow smoothly. I'm not fully confident in my ability to run something like this at this time considering it was just a whim I had on Thursday.

Thanks to those who showed interest!

If I may throw out a suggestion, there's two good starting points if you dont start now.

Starting with the NCAA tournaments in March gives you roughly this schedule

NCAAM and W
Baseball
Premier League
Football
Hockey
Basketball
NCAAF

throw in random pick ems throughout

Which ends with the NBA season roughly in April, so you're on a 13 month cycle

This gives a good starting point with a bracket that is easy to fill out, and then having baseball for the summer with various UFC events gives you a nice slow start that starts ramping up August-October draft wise, and lets you end with NBA and NHL so that two big sports helps determine the winner

Alternatively, start with the baseball draft at the end of March and save the NCAA brackets for the back end, so you have a frantic finish that could drastically change the winner

My two cents would be that you start small and add more in as required.

Like Premier League, NFL, Hockey and Basketball all run at the same time. Can people even juggle 4 leagues at the same time? At least NFL is only like 1-2 times a week tinkering. Premier League is similar. Basketball though? I've only done daily fantasy with Basketball, I assume a full fantasy schedule with basketball requires a lot more attention.

Actually maybe that's a compromise. Instead of doing full fantasy drafts for the full season. Maybe you have a set slate of daily fantasy matches instead with points awarded for position each week (10 > 9 > 8 > 7 > etc). That would mean you could add in or reduce number of games as required if people felt there was too many or too few. There would also be the added bonus of people not being completely fucked by a bad draft or injury. If people missed a week it wouldn't be too devastating either and you could kinda replace people mid season if you had to.

Like maybe week 1 you go we are doing:

Sat games - Premier League
Sunday games - NFL
Wednesday game - Basketball

Or maybe you don't do each sport each week. Maybe you say this week it's Soccer + Football. Next week it's Basketball + Hockey. Third week its Football + Basketball. Etc.

These are good ideas that I'm taking into consideration. I have no experience with daily fantasy stuff, so I have trouble envisioning how that would work.

I know there are two types of Premier League fantasy in selecting your team for the season vs. drafting your team against others for the season, and I was leaning towards just letting people select their team since it's less demanding and also seems to be the preferred way to play by those who are into it.

Premier League and MLB are both very hard to work around since they are almost directly opposed to each other (August - May vs. March - September). I imagine the marathon would have to start at one of those two season's beginnings. You're looking at a 13 or 14 month cycle depending on where you begin.

This is probably where pick 'ems and daily fantasy come into play.
