Basically, all I'm doing for now is going around from town to town trying to get all the rare cards I can. I got the Siren card from the pub owner in Dollet, the Rinoa card from General Caraway in Deling City (although he makes you deliberately lose the Ifrit card to him first, and then instantaneously loses it to Martine in FH somehow, so you have to go all the way back there to reclaim it), and the Odin card for beating Odin (as well as getting 100 Triples for all three party members!). I decided to go ahead and get the Tonberry GF while I was at it, too.

If you go around the world map, you'll find that Galbadia Garden isn't where it used to be. Where is it now? Well, when you get to Balamb, you'll see it floating offshore. When we get in, we find that Galbadia's got the town under martial law and they won't let anyone in. Squall does some quick thinking, knowing what they're looking for, and says that they've got some info on Ellone. The guard at the entrance lets us in, telling us to talk to the commander at the hotel.

When we go into Zell's house, his mom informs us that she saw a woman with gray hair and an eyepatch, so they immediately conclude that Fujin and Raijin must be here. In his mind, Squall wonders if Seifer is here, too. Unfortunately, the soldiers guarding the hotel won't let you in, telling you to go find the captain instead. This part of the game leads you on a wild goose chase, but you can actually just stand around and wait for a set amount of time (I forget how long), and Raijin will eventually come back from "patrol" on his own in case you can't figure out what to do!

If you try to go up to Zell's room before this, he won't let you, claiming the place is "sacred." But once you find out the hotel is occupied, he'll reluctantly let you in. You get a scene depending on which character you bring with you, and they're all pretty great. Unfortunately, you only get it the first time you go, so you can't just rotate party members to get them all.

Once you finally catch up to Raijin, it's just in time to see him get kicked backwards out of the hotel while simultaneously rolling forward. That's quite the kick! Zell will accidentally pick up Raijin's "ya know" at one point, and then we've got a fight with just Raijin, and then Raijin and Fujin together (and we can pick up Pandemona from her while we're at it!).

Squall asks Fujin and Raijin if they're taking orders from the sorceress, but they say she's got nothing to do with this. They've always been on Seifer's side. They say that he has a lot of followers, but they're his only friends. They're a posse. Zell says that if they stand behind him that much, then they should convince him to stop this nonsense. As we later find out, that's what they want, but they'll stay loyal to him all the same. Squall warns them that they won't hold back from here on out. He realizes that friend or foe comes down to circumstance, but at the same time, he doesn't really want to have to fight them.

When we return to Garden, Selphie pops in to ask if we can go to Trabia Garden. She wants to go see how bad it was, and she thinks the sorceress will probably leave it alone since it's out of the way (and presumably destroyed). That means it's almost time for the infamous "We all grew up in the same orphanage" scene...!

I went ahead and caught a chocobo since there's a trophy connected to it. I usually don't bother with FFVIII's chocobo mini-game because it's nothing special, and the only thing you really need it for is to be able to get the Ragnarok back on Disc 4. That being said, I forgot how rockin' FFVIII's chocobo theme is!

When we arrive at Trabia Garden, it's pretty clear that the missiles wrecked it badly, but that doesn't stop Selphie from going in. I like the song that plays here, "Where I Belong." It's a more melancholy version of the upbeat piano tune, "Ami." Naturally, everyone at Trabia Garden is cheered up by Selphie's presence, but you occasionally get to see her drop the mask and show her sadness, like if you go into the graveyard where those who died from the missiles are buried.

We all meet up at the basketball court and everyone ponders the meaning behind everything that's going on so far. Zell wonders if the sorceress was just living a normal life before all of this or if she was waiting in the shadows for this opportunity. Quistis asks why she's searching for Ellone, wondering if there's somewhere in the past the sorceress is trying to get to as well.

When Selphie shows up, the music transitions to the aforementioned "Ami." She asks Squall to take her with him to fight the sorceress because she wants her revenge. Then Rinoa steps forward and asks if there isn't another way that could possibly avoid bloodshed. In his mind, Squall says it'd be great if someone could, but no one's really doing anything to get toward that goal because they're too scared. They only pretend to think up alternate solutions while criticizing others who can't come up with anything either.

Squall doesn't understand why Rinoa's talking like this all of a sudden. He wants her to understand that he grew up in Garden and now he's a SeeD, which means this battle is inevitable. Almost as if reading his thoughts, Rinoa says that he has to voice his feelings or she won't understand. He says that she was part of a resistance movement in Timber that actually took action rather than just talk big, so he wants to know what's causing her to react this way. She admits that she's getting scared. When they're just casually hanging out as friends, she feels like they're all on the same wavelength, but once the battles start, everyone else picks up the tempo and she gets left behind. She's afraid that one day they'll get too far ahead for her to find them again, that one day things will change too much for them to ever be the way they were again. Rinoa is the one person who didn't grow up in Garden, so it makes sense that there are times when she feels like an outsider.

Irvine steps in and says he understands her fear, a fear that someone she wants to see might not be there anymore. It's tough to live that way, but that's why he fights. Picking up a basketball and taking a shot, he starts to reminisce about when he was a little kid in an orphanage (For the record, Irvine can make or miss the shot based on the number of battles you've won. I don't go out of my way to fight a ton, so he's never made the shot in any of my files).

At this point, we transition into an interactive flashback, where we see the present-day versions of the characters interacting with their past selves in the orphanage almost as if they were really there seeing all of it. I think the presentation of this part is actually really cool because of that.

Irvine talks about a girl who was very special to him back then, and the girl was clearly Selphie, which prompts her to ask if the orphanage was a stone house, and Quistis asks if it was by the ocean. Irvine confirms it and said he knew right away when they first met. They ask why he didn't tell them, and he said it was because they all seemed to have forgotten about it, so it sucked being the only one who remembered. Irvine plays the customary role of "the party member who withholds critical information from the rest of the party" in Final Fantasy VIII...!

Zell chimes in, asking if they remembered setting off fireworks, confirming that he was there as well. At this point, Squall is wandering around as a transparent "ghost" of sorts because it hasn't been revealed that he was there, too, yet. You can walk around and see different versions of child Squall lamenting over the disappearance of Ellone, which will cause the present day version to declare it a "shameful sight."

It's at this point that Zell realizes he must have been adopted by his parents in Balamb. They also reveal that Seifer was there, trolling Zell every bit as hard back then as he does now. At this point, Squall will comment on what he thought of them as kids. He'll say that Seifer has always been who he is, plain and simple. Zell was always crying an screaming. Selphie was always full of energy. Quistis was difficult to deal with. Then he flatly states that he doesn't remember Irvine at all.

At this point, Irvine states that except for Rinoa, they were all there, which causes Squall to step forward and admit that includes him, too. He says he was always waiting for "Sis" to come back. It's at this point that he recalls that Ellone was the long lost "Sis." She was a bit older than the rest of them, so they all used to call her that. Squall doesn't know what all this means, but they were definitely together. He says that Ellone wants to change the past, but he doesn't know why. Quistis says there can only be one reason, and that's because she isn't happy with the present.

Then they all begin to wonder why Irvine seems to remember all of this stuff, but the rest of them have forgotten so many of the details up to now. Squall says he and Seifer weren't adopted because of the way they were, so they've been at Garden from the beginning. Quistis recalls that she was adopted, but it didn't work out with her new family, so she ended up coming to Garden at the age of 10. Even back then, Squall and Seifer were always fighting, and she would break them up.

Quistis says that Seifer always needed to be the center of attention, so it would drive him crazy when Squall would ignore him. Even so, they would eventually end up fighting because Squall couldn't back down from a challenge. Quistis says she thinks she was trying to take Ellone's place, and she eventually mistook that for romantic affection. Even after she became an instructor, she couldn't stop thinking about him. It was her subconscious feelings as a big sister that lingered that caused her to feel the way she did, or so she thinks. On the same note, Quistis admits she had already given up on Squall once Rinoa came into the picture. This is one of the repercussions of them forgetting so much but still having the experiences and the emotions inside of them somewhere. They know those things are there, but they don't know where they came from, what they mean, or what to do with them.

Quistis realizes that it must be the same for Seifer. He's forgotten his childhood, but those residual feelings are still inside of him. Irvine suggests that this is the price they all pay for using the GFs. Quistis says that's just a rumor the GF critics have spread, and on top of that, there's no way Headmaster Cid would allow it. On the contrary...! Irvine asks the pointed question of how he remembers while everyone else has forgotten because he only started using GFs recently.

Quistis says that they gave up their memories in exchange for power. That's one of the questions the game poses: What price are you willing to pay to have the power to make your dreams come true? Are you even willing to give up part of what makes you who you are? How far is too far? Irvine says that there are some things they're better off not remembering, especially when you lead a life that revolves around battle. Then they turn to Selphie because it theoretically should be the same for her as well. However, she confesses that she found a GF inside a monster during an outdoor training session when she was 12 and junctioned it for a while. However, she can't remember the name of the GF anymore.

Quistis asks what they should do, and Squall responds that they shouldn't do anything. It's too late for them to suddenly stop using GFs now. As long as they're fighting, they need their power. Squall declares that he'll gladly pay whatever the price is for it. Then there's a hilarious moment where Selphie randomly suggests that everyone keep a diary to help them remember stuff, and nobody acknowledges the comment and the conversation continues as if no one heard it!

Zell admits that maybe they're better off forgetting about their childhood. He doesn't mind forgetting about Seifer picking on him all the time. So yeah, I guess that's the question: Would you be willing to get rid of all of your bad memories if it means you lose the good ones, too? I guess it just depends on how bad your past is. Zell says what's important now is having the power to protect his family in Balamb.

Then Quistis asks if they remember Matron. They all picture her and realize she bears an uncanny resemblance to the sorceress. Irvine says that it's more than a resemblance. Matron's name is Edea Kramer, so she IS Sorceress Edea. The fact that he clearly remembers this goes to show that this is probably the main reason he choked on the assassination attempt way back when.

Naturally, the logical followup question is: Why would Matron do all of the things she's doing as Sorceress Edea? There's no way they can know that now, and they probably wouldn't totally understand it even if they did. Irvine says that SeeD and Garden were her ideas, and SeeDs are supposed to fight the sorceress. Then Squall realizes a contradiction. Seifer was torturing him wanting to know what SeeD was, but theoretically, Edea should already know the answer to that.

Irvine says that he gets what Rinoa's trying to say, but he's going to fight all the same. He wants to stay true to everything he's stood for, and he's sure everyone else feels the same way. That's why he thought it'd be best if they all knew they were going to have to face Matron. He talks about the cliche that life has infinite possibilities, but he doesn't believe that one bit. Sometimes in life, he only had one path to take. His limited possibilities and the choices he made brought him to where he is now, and he doesn't want to diminish that by running away. He realizes they might lose someone important to this war and something important because of the GF, but he's accepted that. He says he's here because he chose to be here, not because of "fate." Can it be both though? The game clearly makes a big deal of the role "fate" plays in this story. Can you have both free will and predestination? That's the big question!

With the flashback concluded, Squall turns back to Rinoa. They've all decided to fight because it's the only way they can move on with their lives, and he invites her to join them. Zell says they should look for Edea's orphanage because they might be able to find some clue as to how she became the way she is now. Squall says that it probably has something to do with the past, but the past is over and done with now. Whatever they could find wouldn't change anything. Even so, he wants to find it, too. This is a rare instance (up to this point) of Squall acting on emotion instead of logic.

With all that done, I can finally win the Selphie card from her friend inside Trabia Garden (although the Plus rule paired with Random is total garbage). I remember finding Edea's House the first time and being very confused that you couldn't go in, completely unaware that Galbadia Garden was nearby waiting for me! You can accidentally initiate the sequence if you get too close to it before you're ready because it's pretty hard to spot it until you're close to it thanks to the camera angles.
