I'd love to read a book on how weird our country is about race.

In St. Patrick's a bunch of dudes walk around with "Kiss me, I'm Irish" shirts and drinking Guiness because "they're Irish", and by that they mean that their grand, grand, grandfather on their mother's side was 1/2 Irish. Nobody challenges that.

They can also do that, AND have an Ireland sticker on their car, and nobody will call them unamerican. As a matter of fact, Paul Ryan and Mike Pence can't shut up about "their Irish roots".

But if you dare to say "hola" or post something about cinco de mayo redcaps will give you a hard time for "betraying your country" or will say you're unamerican. Also, if you're black/brown/asian and happen to have a european parent, nobody will believe you an/or remind you that you don't get to claim that heritage.

It's messed up AF.

Race is one of the main clevages in our society and has been since before there was even a single colony here. It's determined life and death, freedom or slavery, voting rights, social rights, economic rights, where you live, where you're buried, who you can date, what's a crime and what's not, and basically every other important thing in life. So yeah, people are gonna care about it a little.
