imagine a comic book series where the story starts in the 30's or the 40's. and it continues on through the decades as it would in a real world without retcons or reboots. and we see superheroes age and retire and die, and replaced by younger generations. and the story just always moves forward.

start by going through history from the 30's in a sped up fasion. maybe do a series of mini series for each decade covering major events. and then when it gets caught up to modern times, slow down and then keep the story going in actual real time

DC already did, sort of. They did a series that assumed Batman and Superman appeared in the 40s, then grew old and passed on their legacy to younger heroes (eventually their own kids). And one of the plans for Earth-2 at one point was to do things that way (which is why you had the original Huntress as the daughter of Batman and Catwoman).

That was also supposed to be the original intention with the Ultimate universe for Marvel.

Interestingly enough, Marvel just finished a six issue miniseries called "Spider-Man: Life Story" where each issue is a different decade in the life of Peter's superhero career. Starting in the 60's and ending in the 2010's.

that sounds really cool, I need to check that out

it would be normal comic book super hero stories. just the characters would age. and new people would gradually phase in and replace the old ones. like how it works in real life. but yea, I guess it would be like a soap opera in that the story just goes on and on and on and on

Superman and Batman: Generations.

One of the few DC series I actually read, I definitely recommend reading it.
