Welcome, boys & ghouls, to the fourth annual installment of Snake Ranks Anything Horror Related! For this spooky season, we have a whole range of frightful haunts from evil clowns to ghostly stalkers to some of the creepiest footage ever found in animation. And, as many know, four is a number closely associated with death, so I would be extra careful if I were you! Only the bravest of souls will be able to survive these rankings completely intact!

To reiterate from last topic, nominations are ranked with three criteria: Importance, fear factor, and my own personal preferences. Importance is based on its impact to the horror genre and beyond, as well as within its form of media. Fear factor is very obviously based on how scary a particular nomination is, and is judged from my own point of view and from general accounts in the public eye. And well, the last is pretty self-explanatory!

That's it for now! Strap in for another fright fun filed October! Turn off those lights, grab your candy corn, and sit back and relax for another 100 things that will make you lose sleep tonight!

While I can certainly appreciate the creativity of this nomination (and the greatness of its pitch), it's obviously a fear that can be very easily avoided with polite mindfulness. Researching this, I found this is somewhat common thing to have happen, even though it's never happened to me specifically. I've never really been soooo tired that I didn't check what position the toilet seat happened to be in. Still, I can imagine that if this were to happen to someone, they would be pretty pissed (maybe in more ways than one). It's more of a funny thought to me than a scary one, and on this list, that doesn't get you too far.

99. Cult of Chucky (7 points)
Nominated by: BetrayedTangy (4/5 remaining)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20LeBoejmF4" data-time="

Importance: 1.5
Fear: 4.5
Snake: 1

Oh god, do I hate this movie with a passion! No exaggeration, this is one of my least favorite horror movies of the decade, and I have no clue why this got the praise that it did. It's especially a shame, coming off the heels of my favorite Chucky film, Curse of Chucky, a relatively straight-forward but absolutely satisfying slasher that dumped all the convoluted nonsense of prior films for the most part to craft a small story that showcased Chucky's brutality wonderfully. Cult takes a huge shit all over that and instead makes things even more confusing and nonsensical than they were when this new series started. I'd say the positives start and end with its setting. I do enjoy the clean, minimalist look of the mental institution quite a bit, adding a stark contrast to the carnage-soaked climax of the film.

On the other hand, we have the most cliched mental institution stereotypes imaginable, on both the doctors and patients sides. Legacy characters don't fare well either. Chucky is fine as usual, but he goes back to that boring, "Chucky isn't real nonsense" that is just such a drag to sit through. Andy suffers horribly though, at one moment prepared and confident to face the new Chucky threat, and the next a bumbling fool with an idiotic plan that leaves him locked up in the institution. Great going there! Next, this is a slasher film with only one memorable death I can think of and it isn't even that great or imaginative from both a genre perspective and in its own series. By the end of the film, there's like a million god damn Chuckys roaming around now and couldn't have one lick of insight into what the hell I had even witnessed with a really rushed ending.

Look, I appreciate the fact that Don Mancini has a vision for his Child's Play series that he continues to expand on after all these years with the same cast and crew keeping things pretty consistent and with little to no studio interference. Most series, especially horror, with this many installments tend to become bottom of the barrel crap everyone tends to ignore. To Cult's credit, people loved the film and it is even getting a follow-up TV series due to start next year. Yet, it's a bit hard for me personally to take this seriously now when this year's remake blew Cult of Chucky absolutely out of the water, and then some! Unfortunately, when it comes to my personal preference, Cult of Chucky would be better left at the bottom of the bargain bin where it belongs.

Haha was curious to see how this would fare. I definitely think in terms of being a good horror film it fails. But I had a ton of fun watching it. To me it felt like all the actors were having a blast in their roles and I absolutely love how Chucky just trolls them the whole time.

Also nice to see the new Child's Play has the Snake seal of approval, I'll have to check it out since I missed it in theaters

I will definitely concede that fun was sure had! That's why even though I didn't like Cult, I found myself agreeing with the cast/crew that the announced remake was definitely cutting in on their series and their future plans.

Still, the remake definitely proved itself and it is a really creative take on the original rather than being a bland straight-forward remake, like some others I can think such as Poltergeist or Carrie.

98. Eye of Cthulhu (9 points)
Nominated by: MetalmindStats (4/5 remaining)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hm6yJzMh2c8" data-time="

Importance: 1.5
Fear: 3
Snake: 4.5

Honestly, I was a little disappointed with this. Based on the name, I expected the Eye of Cthulhu to be more fearsome than it actually is. Now, I don't think there's anything wrong with the actual sprite work, actually I think the Eye itself is well designed and looks creepy enough, and it stands out amongst the other character designs. However, what really lacks here and ultimately drags it down a bunch, is the way the player goes about interacting with it. The fight seems rather rote and one-note, and the music is not what I imagine at all when I think of "Eye of Cthulhu". I know Terraria isn't specifically trying to be a horror game, but the best horror games should make every battle feel insurmountable with gripping tension as you feel death can come from any wrong move. As far as Terraria concerned, it has the horror elements without actually utilizing the tools that makes it all come together for a frightening experience, and as a result, I just can't rank it any higher.

Aw, I was hoping not to lose a nom this soon. :(

For what it's worth (minor spoilers): The Eye of Cthulhu has a chance of attacking near the start of every night until you first defeat it, once you get your health up to a certain point. There's definitely been occasions when I've been underprepared for a boss fight and the telltale message alerting you of its imminent attack has given me the chills. That would only be exacerbated if I was playing on one of Terraria's harder character difficulties, particularly the highest, roguelite difficulty where one death ends your entire character.

Of course I'm biased, but Terraria is one of my favorite games ever. The variably subtle horror slant of a large portion of its lore and visual design is part of the reason why, though admittedly you're right that its gameplay typically doesn't reflect those aspects much.

Importance: 2

I am very much a fan of introducing horror elements in kid-friendly properties, and Mad Monster Mansion is no exception to this. Stuff like this can be great gateways into building a relationship with horror and things that scare you, and though I don't think Mad Monster Mansion is likely to scare even a little kid all that much, the horror elements on display here would definitely establish an interest in seeking similar things to it, I think. Classic iconography from a hedgerow maze to a voodoo witch doctor to a stained-glass clock tower make Mad Monster Mansion an almost definitive checklist of spooky elements specifically designed as a crash course in horror. Even the music sells this idea quite well, and is maybe the creepiest element of this whole thing. It's cool to see a game like this try something different and also commit to it fully, giving kids and adults alike something to appreciate.

Yeah which I realize is a bit of a flaw with the rankings sometimes. I guess I tend to look to those ratings as more of an informative tool to help others expand their knowledge of a particular nomination than a definitive "this is better than something else" rating, if that makes any sense.

Importance: 1

Speaking of creepy things in kids games, here we have the Hell Valley Sky Trees, creepy looking figures that appear off in the distance in Shiverburn Galaxy. It's difficult to discern their purpose or reason for even being in the game, but some sources I read say they're references to Japanese spirts known as Kodama, a tree spirit that curses anyone who cuts down a tree in inhabits. Interesting stuff to have in a Mario game for sure! They're mildly unsettling especially in the context of the game itself, but nothing I would lose sleep over. Still, it's intriguing that something like this exists in the first place.

95. Painting where the eyes move when the protagonist looks away (10 points)

I think this is a trope almost everybody knows, and yet, I find it difficult to really think of memorable examples off the top of my head. This is because, in my opinion, this is an extremely corny trope that's easy to pull off and doesn't leave any real, lasting impact on the viewer in question. And, after all, it is a trope specifically designed for the viewer, since many protagonists simply dismiss it as a trick of the imagination if they even notice it at all. So many of these scenes play out the exact same way, and it's Scooby-Doo levels of nonsense that isn't scary or funny in any matter, and as such I really have to question its inclusion in most stories anymore beyond parody. Are there exceptions? Few, but yes. One of my favorite uses of the painting eye holes is in Haunting Ground, as it plays into the voyeuristic nature of the game as Lorenzo spies on Fiona changing her clothes at the beginning of the game through one. The graphics of the game make it so you can't even tell anything's different about the painting, until it switches to Lorenzo's perspective which is a cool touch. It establish's Lorenzo's character before we even hear that name for hours too!

This is a very hard trope to pull off correctly with impact, and is otherwise a cheap tool from the horror 101 guidebook that is often used as a crutch for smart writing, tension-filled scenes, and creating conflict between characters.

Moon Lord is much better horror than Eye of Cthulhu. Better fight and unique music and there's a minute-long intro where the music fades and the screen periodically dims which is actually pretty tense on your first fight (of course it still wouldn't rank very high)

or shit like the abyss from calamity or polterghast because at least it has music

Man Pokemon is weird. I know I shouldn't be surprised at this point, but like god damn, how does a dead human spirit become a Pokemon? What is the process behind that? How does that work?! It's pretty sad how they're mask is a reflection of how they used to look and that they cry when they look at it. I don't think this is one of the creepier Pokemon though (and there are a lot of them), since its appearance is a bit cuter than most and all it wants is friends which is really heartwarming. However, it does evolve into Cofagrigus, now there's a creepy one we'll save for another time!

wondering about spiritual beliefs in the pokemon universe whereby human souls and pokemon are treated the same. i guess since god is a pokemon, people don't think of themselves as the centre of the universe?

or the pokedex is apocryphal

92. The Tam-Tara Deepcroft, Hard Mode (11 points)
Nominated by: Trdl23 (4/5 remaining)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2y_qGU7e_c0" data-time="

Importance: 1.5
Fear: 4.5
Snake: 5

At first, I wasn't that impressed with this nomination. I had written it off much lower than I had it at first, that was, until I looked into and was fairly impressed with what I saw for an MMO. The perspective and gameplay style of your typical MMO makes it hard for FF14 to illicit any real scares through play, but looking into the lore of it all I discovered the darker meaning behind Avere, the weird floating head and Edda, the White Mage who appears to control it in some fashion. You need to pretty steeped in FF14 lore to get the full extent of this revelation, as the dungeon doesn't reveal much of this itself, but from what I gathered, Edda was a white mage in group of adventurers and betrothed to Avere. The group broke up after Avere was killed during a dungeon, blaming Edda for her lack of skills. Edda proceeded to carry her lover's head around, before resurrecting it as a Lovecraftian entity. Now, that's a pretty abridged summary of everything, but it's a creepy and dark story I definitely wasn't expecting out of this game. Edda's facial expressions in the dungeon are extremely unsettling as is her ghostly appearance after you defeat her.

I can't help but think this as a whole would be scarier in a different game though. There are so many things here that take me out of the atmosphere, including speechless characters, goofy actions from protagonists, the hilarious out-of-place victory tune after the defeat of Avere. There's some good lore here for an absolutely solid fantasy horror game all on its own, and while I'm glad something this does exist for an MMO, I also feel like there's a bit of wasted potential here too.

Something that's hard to catch unless you play the game itself is all of the notes from her journal that lie scattered about... and they're all about your character. Her obsession with you, your bravery, your skill, and how she wants her resurrected Avere to be just like you, but maybe even better. So when you show up to stop her, she's absolutely thrilled. What could be better for her new-and-improved Avere than the soul of the person she's admired so much?

Wow that's insane. I sort of casually played FFXIV's story and thought it was fine, but if the lore is that intense I might have to start reading more about it

It's also notable that this is the ONLY dungeon in the game (to my knowledge) where that victory screen does not involve anyone in your party celebrating the victory. Even though the traditional Final Fantasy victory music plays, the mood is dour.

Yeah the Deepcroft storyline is great just for how out of the fucking blue it is. They take such a throwaway scene during early leveling that is just there to say "hey don't be a prick in parties" and escalate it like mad. It also KEEPS GOING after Deepcroft if you decide to do PotD. There might be even more tied to it after that but I haven't done Floor 100-200

FFXIV's story actually gets pretty hype after the post ARR giga chain and into Heavensward. Haven't gotten to Stormblood but heard it takes a little dip but still neat and then Shadowbringers brings it into overdrive even better than Heavensward. I'll have to see when I get to it.

The raids and elite super dungeons also have hype stories. Alexander and Coils of Bahamut were awesome and had tight music. Heck one boss is basically a super sentai giant robot and your party does a fun backs turned to the explosion shot

Nope! Just leaving it as is. There's always a possibility I would have to research a new nom too much or it would be lower than things ranked already.

Se7en tried to add one after the noms closed, so if Snake was going to allow one more he probably would've already accepted that one.
