Pacific Gas & Electric began shutting off power in 34 California counties early Wednesday Oct. 9. The shutdowns started in Northern California and Marin County shortly after midnight, and were expected to begin in the rest of the Bay Area around noon on Wednesday.

In all, nearly 800,000 PG&E customers may be affected by the outage, which could last for days in some cases.

In the Bay Area, portions of San Mateo, Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Solano, Sonoma and Napa counties are affected.

The approximate boundaries of the potential outage are shown on the map above.

Besides the Bay Area, the notice covers portions of the counties of Alpine, Amador, Butte, Calaveras, Colusa, El Dorado, Glenn, Humboldt, Lake, Mariposa, Mendocino, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, San Joaquin, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou, Stanislaus, Tehama, Trinity, Tuolumne, Yolo and Yuba.

PG&E says the map information should be considered a general guideline. For the latest updates or to check whether a specific address is expected to be affected, go to PG&Es website. The utility will also attempt to notify customers before their electricity is cut.

The planned shutoff was prompted by heightened fire risk amid expected dry and windy conditions on Wednesday.

This map is ridiculous. So much loss of revenue due to businesses being unable to operate without backup generators. Homes without power - refrigeration, heating, possible desktop computer hardware damage, etc. Supermarkets unable to keep food cooled - loss of food and revenue.

All due to a moronic company's negligence. No wonder they're bankrupt.

They cut people's power just in case?

Not to perform upgrades or maintenance?

Remember that movie Erin Brockovich?

Remember that huge explosion in San Bruno, California back in 2010, that leveled a suburban area of homes?

Butte fire in 2015 from trees contacting with power lines, same with many fires in 2017, and the city of Camp last year? PG&E powerlines.

They got sued recently for some wildfires. Huge lawsuits. So they're like "Fine! You want to sue us over this shit? We'll just shut off power during these higher risk periods. No more fires for you to sue us over and you lose power. So fuck off for suing us. :p"

So instead of doing preventative maintenance by removing the branches near power lines...nevermind...

Hey, that's me! Power goes off in a little over 2 hours. Officials said not to drive around too much, since traffic lights won't work. I charged my electronics last night and then unplugged everything. I did some laundry and also got some ice for keeping food cold. Don't think it will be enough if the outage is going to last 5 days though.

So the issue is that they werent maintaining the lines and equipment responsibly? And now people are losing power so they can fix their mistakes?

Nope. They aren't shutting off the power so they can fix the issues that lead to the fires. They're shutting off the power during high risk periods so those same problems won't cause more fires.

They'll inspect the equipment for damage from the wind storms after they have passed and repair any damage caused by them. But from everything the news has been saying and in their own press releases, there isn't any planned maintenance. It's merely a precautionary measure. It's also retaliation for being sued.

Retaliating for being sued by causing people to lose more money that they can potentially sue you for seems like a rather questionable idea.

It's all over the news here. But I guess I'm right in the middle of it. It's mostly what everyone was talking about yesterday. Lots of people filling up on gas (which is over $4.50 in some areas!) because gas stations won't work when the power is out.

Don't forget that instead of upgrading their equipment to make it safer, PG&E took in billions of dollars in profits and raised executive pay 94%.

what about people who require medical equipment to not, yknow, turn the fuck off

hospitals have super generators, sure, but that's...kinda fucked for them to have to do this through no fault of their own, and then you have the people not at hospitals. places like nursing homes and just people at home.

if any deaths happens during this, because of this, they are going to get completely fucked.
